From the Inside Flap
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.
Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.
Q: When did you decide to become a writer?
Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.
What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.
Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.
Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.
Q: Who do you like to read?
Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.
My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY WIFE
HORTON HATCHES A TERRORIST PLOT
ON BEYOND DONKEY PUNCH
MARVIN K MOONEY WILL YOU PLEASE DROP DEAD
THE CAT IN THE HAT GETS NEUTERED
GREEN EGGS AND E COLI
THIDWICK THE BIG HEARTED COKE DEALER
MR. BROWN CAN MOO, AND THEY PUT HIM AWAY
THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET, AND I BLAME CIALIS
BOOMER THE TUMOR
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.
Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?
Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.
Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.
Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.
I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.
Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.
I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.
It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.
When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.
Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?
Joe:This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits. My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.
Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?
Joe: Nope. Not really.

About the author

Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

The increased productivity, the increased ability to work and to create are the prospects that are driving the development of this new drug. However, to quickly bring the drug to market, the company begins to take short cuts including faking and ignoring research results. The human subjects begin to suffer but this and other negative and bad research results are ignored, hidden and falsified. Greed has become the driving force for the development of this drug.
All in all, Disturb is an entertaining read. It is not the typical Konrath novel; the quirky humor is gone and while there is a fair amount of violence it doesn't seem excessive, however, the premise of this novel seems all too real.
Okay, so right off the bat my attention was definitely got!
I mean, it was got real hard!
You have to understand, I suffer from bad sleep apnea. I have got one of those breathing machines - and aside from making me look and sound a little like Darth Vader, I sleep just fine - but there were many years when I did NOT sleep well at all. I would wake up to dreams of me being underneath a frozen creek bed or a great stone that was weighing me down. My heart would go thumpedy-bump like a herd full of rabid jackrabbits and I would wake up gasping for breath.
So anything to do with not sleeping equals sleeping catches my attention.
The pages were fast-turners. I ran through the chapters like...well, like a herd full of rabid jackrabbits.
I am talking about Thumper City.
Did it scare me? Well, no, but it made my heart speed up in a good way. Konrath keeps the tension garotte-tight and I enjoyed the whole read.
So let me give this book a big thumbs up. It isn't Konrath's best work - but heck, even on a bad day he just plain delivers the goods.
Grab a copy today while it is free - before he wakes up and starts charging for this puppy.
Yours in storytelling,
Steve Vernon
In "Disturb", Konrath creates a Robin Cook-like medical thriller revolving around a drug, N-Som, that makes sleep unnecessary. Think of the possibilities... As the inventors and researchers responsible for the creation of the drug start the process with the FDA to get N-Som approved, strange things begin to happen to the people responsible for the drug. Konrath does a great job introducing a number of plot-relevant characters that are fairly fleshed out.
The book has plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of twists and turns as Konrath peels away the layers of suspense involved with the side effects that accompany the benefits of the drug. Most readers should find themselves flipping page after page as they attempt to figure which direction the next plot twist will take them. The book is almost cinematic in that respect and would make a nice film.
Though not as riveting as "Afraid", "Disturb" is able to stand on its own feet and delivers thrills page after page. Fans of Konrath/Kilborn will want to add this book to their "read" list.
by J.A. Konrath
This is the sixth book I've ready by J.A. Konrath (aka Jack Kilborn), who has written yet another solid novel. This one might even be my favorite by him. True to his other writing, he does two things incredibly well: he tells a great story; and, he peppers it with his brand of humor throughout. He claims that Disturb has less of that Konrathian humor than his other books, and that may be so, but it's still there. And it's good.
I think I once read somewhere that he acknowledges he is more of an entertainer, focused on the story, versus the prose. That's probably true, and that's fine, because it is indeed a great story. That's plenty for most readers.
What really got to me with this book was the main idea--the creation of a pill that replaces the need to sleep. Wow! I thought that was totally cool and we get a solid story placed on that foundation.
If you're already a fan of Konrath's, this is a no-brainer. For those looking for an entertaining thriller...no-brainer. It's a fun and entertaining read.

Disturb is a medical thriller with a very interesting premise but unfortunately it doesn't deliver. I think the best summary of the book actually comes from the Author himself in his afterward. He explains that Disturb came after a list of rejected novels, and as a result, he decided to write a 'by-the-numbers, straightforward, homogenous thriller' which his agent didn't think was good enough to send out to publishers. After having more success with other titles Konrath decided to self publish on his website and Amazon.
I think this best sums up what I thought of the book, the characters are under-developed which I guess makes it easier seeing as how many of them end up dying! There is a twist revealed 60% of the way though the book but it was easily guessable after a few pages. Every chapter seems to end with a cliff-hanger with either someone dying or you thinking someone has died which leads to there being no stakes in the plot.
Overall I got it for free and therefore there was nothing lost but Konrath mentions that 'there isn't much of me in the book', and I really do think that he should have a go at rewriting it in a style he is happier with - it's an interesting premise which should be explored further!

I did sort of see the twist coming but this did not take away from the story at all and I was only partly right so there were still plenty of surprises!
At the end of the book there was a note from the author giving a little history about his writing career and a bonus short story that was every bit as weird as the main novel.
If you like crime, fast paced thrillers, stories set in the medical world and general weirdness, this book is for you.
Pleased to see he has written many more books I shall give some a try in the future.

The execution however I found to be just ok, often with confusing scenes that had to go back to unravel. There were a lot of deaths shown in detail. This felt rather gratuitous to me, it did not add to the plot or the suspense. In its defence I will say there were a couple of good twists and I was interested enough to keep reading but it is not something I would hurry to search out a sequel for.
