An engrossing page-turner that's both intimate and vast. Themes are echoed across narrative threads and there is a deft use of different points of view. Reynold's imaginary universe is breathtaking, as usual.

Great Space Opera

I read on the recommendation of Steve Gibson (@SGgrc). It was a very good SciFi Space Opera. I thought the scope of the story and depth of the universe were outstanding. The characters were also well drawn and very believable. While the science was detailed and consistent, there were a couple of things that I thought were contrived only to move the story along and that bothers me a little. I don't recall the specifics, so they were minor. The ending was also not as fulfilling as I expected. This was also minor. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes good Space Opera and I'll be reading some works of Alastair Reynolds (this was the first of his works that I have read).

Imperfect book with a perfect ending

House of Suns reminds me why I struggle to finish good books. There is a terrible sense of loss having turned that last page. The characters could have used a little more development but I'm glad to have known them. Just as importantly, I am glad to have caught a glimpse of the galaxy that the Lines' ships sail. It is a beautiful and often mind-boggling universe, and to have such a personal story unfold in that vastness demonstrates great skill on Reynolds's part.

This is my first book by this author and I am hooked.

Adventures and mystery in space + surprising romance.

House of Suns has a lot of elements packed into it and some are ones that I don't often see in a great space operas. Besides all of the intense/bonkers amount of science, mythology and mystery to digest while reading you get at the core of the story a really sweet picture of friendship and love. A few believe that there isn't great characterization to be found in House of Suns, but I think the main characters are well fleshed out. I really just want more of them and their adventures together and I would totally read another novel of just Campion and Purslane getting into mischief and high jinks together. Their commitment to each other is refreshing and I love it. Hopefully one day (soon) Alastair Reynolds will write up another work with Campion and Purslane.
