The description states that this card is Mac OSX compatible, and it technically is. However, the included CD would not work in my PowerMac. I had to search out the drivers on the manufacture's home page. Also note that the Mac drivers are packaged in the "SY-PCX40009_Windows_2000-XP-2003_server-Vista-7" driver package. You will also need software to extract a .RAR archive file (not standard on a Mac but free software is available).

I have only had this item for a couple weeks, and I had a scare just yesterday when my Windows Home Server (WHS) seemed to no longer see the drive connected to this controller. Looking in Device Manager, I realized that the controller wasn't being seen by Windows (hence any drives connected would not be seen either). I shut down the server and swapped the PCI-x slot this controller card was in on the motherboard and fired the server back up. Once the server started back up it saw the controller card again without issue. I truly believe this had nothing to do with the card itself, and was most likely the server's motherboard/slot.

Since this is in my server, performance isn't that big of an issue for me, so I never tested it for performance. I can tell you this though, there have been ZERO performance issues with it, so that's good enough for me. My main driver for buying this was to add SATA to my 10 year old server that I'm running WHS on, and this allows me to add 4 SATA drives up to whatever comes out on SATA2 (which I believe the ceiling is said to be 32TB or something crazy like that). This basically future proofed my server to be useful for the foreseeable future, and WHS has been AWESOME!! I originally was running W2K8 Server on there, but WHS is SOOOO simple and much better for a small business/household of up to 10 PCs.

I can't speak to the RAID attributes of this card because there is no need to use RAID with WHS since it manages duplication of data, and WHS's method still allows you to pull a drive from the server if it dies and get to ALL the data stored on it, which is not possible if you setup a RAID array. THAT alone is an awesome reason to go with WHS as well.

This product did exactly what I needed it to. I needed to add SATA to an old (2003) HP server that I had. The server didn't have PCIe but did have PCI-X.

Here is what is very important: If you are planning on using this as JBOD (Just a Bunch of Drives) vs. RAID then you *HAVE TO* update the bios on this card to the 6.6.0.0 base. The software is available on Silicon Images website. If you don't do this the card will ONLY function as a RAID card and it will drive you crazy. I'd also recommend downloading the latest drivers from SiliconImage as well instead of using the included mini cd.

Works very well converting an old server from SCSI to modern day SSD drives in a PCI-X slot. Pretty fast considering the server is over 10 years old. With Samsung SSD drive (840 EVO) getting well over 200Mb/sec using CrystalMark. (Which is about 10x what the factor SCSI drives were getting.) Mostly plug and play very little trouble with it.

Background:
I had a server with an Intel SE7501BR2 motherboard running FC 14. This motherboard has 4 PCI-X 64 bit and 2 PCI 32 bit slots. The motherboard had a Silicon Image SIL 3114 SATA I controller card handling RAID 1 on 2 500 GB WD drives.

Results:
I replaced the SIL 3114 card with this SIL 3124 card. I attached the 2 drives to the new SATA II controller, buttoned the server backup and booted it. The SATA II controller recognized the mirror of the 2 drives and proceeded to operate as if nothing happened! This means that the software that FC 14 uses to talk with the old SATA I card also works with this SATA II card.

All in all, up to this moment in time anyway, this SATA II card is working very well and is fast (3 GB/sec data transfer speed). I highly recommend it.

Update:
This update is being done on 9/3/14. The SIL 3124 card is still working in my server with no problems. I am considering installing one in another server to use SSD's (solid state drives) for backup of my main server. I will post more updates as time goes on.

I'm using this on a Dell T7400 to connect a caged drive with 4 2.5" drives. It took a bit of fiddling to get this to work with the motherboard raid sata, but once I got the bios settings correct and the drivers updated, all went well. This was an unusual setup and it is likely most people won't have to change settings to run two sata adapters. At any rate, it is best to decide ahead of time if you are setting raids or joining drives or using them as separate drives. So far it performs reliably.

Update: After using it a couple of months without an issue, I've noticed that one of the 4 ports is not working correctly at bootup. I don't often reboot that server, but when I do, Windows will hang until I physically disconnect the drive from that specific board port. Once the system completes bootup, the drive can be reconnected and read. I'm thinking this problem might be solved with an available firmware upgrade for the card, but I have yet to complete that. It is not a problem with the drive itself, because I can change the cabling and the problem is specific to that one port.
