Commentary on Genesis - Volume 1 - Enhanced Version (Calvin's Commentaries) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

In this volume, John Calvin provides an engaging commentary on the first 23 chapters of Genesis. Regarded as one of the Reformation's best interpreters of scripture, Calvin is an apt commentator. In particular, he frequently offers his own translations of a passage, explaining the subtitles and nuances of his translation. He has a penchant for incorporating keen pastoral insight into the text as well. He always interacts with other theologians, commentators, and portions of the Bible when interpreting a particular passage. Further, this volume also contains extensive, informative notes from the editor. After 400 years, Calvin's Commentary on Genesis remains instructive, engaging, and lively. It should not be ignored.

Needless to say, John Calvin isn't for everyone. I personally like his commentary and the great breadth and depth from a variety of disciplines to the text. For a guy who interpreted scripture in the 16th Century, I really enjoy the insights he finds in the scriptures because of his multi-discipline background. What is especially nice is that at a cheap price, I can get this wisdom on my Kindle in a professional display with easy navigation. I can carry a theological library in my hand. These volumes (22 in hard print) fill up two shelves on a book case and are not mobile. So, I get excellent exegesis and mobility. What's not to like?

I just bought this for the Kindle. Upon opening the book, the title was half on the front page ("Commentary on Genesis by-") next page ("-John Calvin"). The pages are all messed up: a full line of text, then one word on the second line; a full line of text, then one word on the forth line, etc. Lots of awkward spacing. It's like they moved it to digital and then didn't even to bother seeing how it looked in Kindle format. The "New Century Kindle Format" is a little deceiving; I should have gone with the .99 one. Not recommended.

I bought this to use as a resource for school research papers and assignments. It has been very helpful and explains scriptures well.

Somewhat a difficult read. This book may be very hard for someone with lower than post-graduate education but good explanations especially on the fall of the human race.
