Dialog of Catherine of Siena - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

The Dialog of Catherine of Siena is a practical and compelling work of Christian mysticism. St. Catherine of Siena, a Dominican Tertiary, wrote it "during a state of ecstasy while in dialogue with God the Father." The book contains a dialog between the "Eternal Father" (God the Father) and "a human soul" (St. Catherine). In it, the Eternal Father describes, through many different analogies, allegories, and metaphors, the spiritual life of humankind. In his description, the Eternal Father emphasizes the importance of cultivating virtue, continually praying, and the need for obedience. Written at a time of spiritual and political upheaval, the Dialog of Catherine of Siena remains relevant even to the present day, and any reader will profit from the sound advice throughout this dialogue. Instructive and profound, the Dialog of Catherine of Siena inspires with a revelation from God.

Everyone should read this book; the world would be a much better place. As people jest about there not being a manual to life, this is it. This is God talking to us and instructing us clearly. There is also much talk about how He feels about His priests, worthy and wretched a like.

We learn much of God the Father from the Old Testament but in this dialogue with Catherine we get His perspective on the pain of sending His Son and having Him rejected by the very people He came to save. I love the image of Jesus as a bridge. You can read this book over and over and still learn wonderful things.

Unfortunately this is an abridged version and it lacks quite a lot of the original text of the book. The original headings are missing. I found "The Bridge" and "The Mystic Body of Holy Church" at least partially contained in this edition in the part called by the translator and editor "Treatise on discretion". The "Treatise on tears" is in the part called "Treatise on prayer".
I haven't found the treatise called "The Way of Perfection", which in original edition opens the book.

Regarding the translation. I have found one example of not very fortunate simplification ("enhancing"?).
In numerous passages God spoke to Catherine of what the translator rendered as "the stain of Adam's sin", in other translation, "the pus of Adam's sin". The latter rendering seems to be more accurate as it better fits to the whole figure of healing. God tells e.g. in 14th paragraph of the chapter called "Dialogue" (Here "A Treatise of Discretion") about the Incarnation of His son who brought healing to human race:

"And in this way was destroyed the stain of Adam's sin, only the mark of it remaining behind, that is an inclination to sin, and to every sort of corporeal defect, like the cicatrice which remains when a man is healed of a wound... the great Physician, that is to say of My only-begotten Son, cured this invalid, He drinking this bitter medicine."

In other translation I found in the Web, this image of healing is rendered better: "So the pus was drained out of Adam's sin, leaving only its scar, that is, the inclination to sin and every sort of physical weakness like the scar that remains after a wound has healed... But when the great doctor came (My only-begotten Son) He tended that wound, drinking Himself the bitter medicine".

I don't have access to the original Italian edition, so I do not know which word is actualy used there. The Polish translation, published by the Dominicans in 2012 has: "...was destroyed the venom of Adam's sin" ("został zniszczony jad grzechu Adama").

I can't begin to express the importance of this book. It is difficult to grasp every nuance in the first or even second reading. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to deepen their faith life.
