A Short and Easy Method of Prayer - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

This little book, A Short and Easy Method or Prayer, was written for a few individuals who wanted to love God with their whole hearts by Madame Guyon, a celebrated French mystical writer of the Quietist school. This book gives simple instructions in contemplative prayer, prayer without words or distinct ideas. It also encourages readers to accept all things as from God's hand. At the time of printing, which was a rather stormy era in France religious history, the work resulted in Madame Guyon being both attacked and defended by some of the most brilliant writers of her day, even resulting in her imprisonment for a time. The work continues to attract strong defenders and critics, but many find in it a fruitful way to seek God.

This edition features an artistic cover, a new promotional introduction, an index of scripture references, links for scripture references to the appropriate passages, and a hierarchical table of contents which makes it possible to navigate to any part of the book with a minimum of page turns.

She lost her freedom for 7 years during which time she continued to write about the God she loved.

I'd read about her and read some quotes. I knew she was imprisoned for some years mostly because of this book, so I had to read it. I finally checked and discovered it was available for Kindle. I was excited. I am thankful that I got to sit at her knee, so to speak. In my opinion, she is primarily teaching Lectio Divina, what became known as Centering Prayer, and contemplation. She was something of a spiritual pioneer in her day.

If you can grasp the concept that Mme. Guyon is expounding here, it will take you to wherever it is you are destined to go in the Spirit realm. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THE WATERED DOWN REWRITE - "A Short and Easy Method of Prayer - Enhanced Version". It is so diluted as to be nearly worthless and contains at least one statement that Mme. Guyon not only would not make, but teaches against. I won't even give my copy away to someone else, but will throw it away. As for this version, the 'Authentic Original Classic', it has to be read like the Bible, a little at a time. It is wonderfully profitable.

The book is about the married of the beloved and the lover. It is not a method is a relationship between a soul and Jesus through the power of the Spirit. She finds the spiritual communion with Jesus better than life. Psalm 63 She jumped to the river of life and enjoy an intimate relationship with her Savior. Jesus said to Pilatus " my kingdom is not from this world". She knows the scriptures and she was a big threat to the established church of France who was married to the king of France for power and influence. It was not a miracle that her writing survived.

Well, this is not a book to be taken lightly or view as a quick read. In fact, I have not, as of yet, finished it even though it is only about 95 pages. You must, with all deference to the reader of this review, read each sentence several times and with careful thought. For two reasons. The first is that it is a direct translation from the French (noun articles and genders) and of the time in which it was written. The second is that it is packed with spirituality. I am now working on thought control and have realized the importance that it plays in a Christian's life. When I am satisfied with my standing in this area, I will move on and perhaps write another review of the rest of the book. It is, at any rate, profound and should be considered part of a Christian's bibliography.

The same yesterday, today and forever. Amazing to me that a 300 year old book contains the same love and power as is available to us today. The furious longing of God to dwell within us never changes and this little treasure confirms and guides. I had to read it very slowly then rest and digest before going back for more. Punctuation and spelling and meaning of words makes for some difficulty but worth the perseverance.

Madam Guyon was truly a godly woman with true godly wisdom and devotion to Jesus our Lord. Though don't understand some of what she wrote and may disagree very little, I truly am inspired and encouraged spiritually with her writings. I recommend her books heartily.

Some years ago, whilst on a sailing adventure in the North Atlantic, I awoke from a dream in which the most beautiful woman sang the most beautiful song and spoke the most beautiful words. The experience left me floating like a feather on the breath of God, as Hildegard of Bingen put it. I swooned in and out of ecstasy as I beheld the most heavenly visions of cosmic harmony.

I now feel as if I have met that woman again in the form of Jeanne Guyon with instructions on how to get back there.
