Revelations of Divine Love (Annotated) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 683 ratings

Written in the 14th century, Revelations of Divine Love is a powerful work of English mysticism. After falling deathly ill, St. Julian received sixteen different mystical revelations; in this splendid work, she describes and reflects upon those revelations. Having received these revelations at a time of great pain for herself, as she lay ill, she focuses on the mysteries of Christianity, in particular, the vast love of God and the existence of evil. She describes the "motherhood" of God, depicting how God suffers with his creation as it experiences great and multifaceted evil. Nevertheless, she also emphasizes the need to follow God in order to receive the beautiful vision of God in the afterlife. For her deep and penetrating descriptions of God and love, countless readers have found St. Julian's work uplifting, encouraging, and challenging. Revelations of Divine Love astounds readers, engulfing them in a powerful revelation of God's love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Contributes to the complete picture of Julian of Norwich as an author in that it invites renewed close reading of the Revelation and study of the text in its varied manuscript and textual contexts. --Review of English Studies

From the Publisher

"I have been reading Lady Julian of Norwich," declares C.S. Lewis in a letter to his former pupil, the Benedictine mystic Bede Griffiths. "A dangerous book, clearly. I'm glad I didn't read it much earlier." Thomas Merton wrote simply, "There can be no doubt that Julian is the greatest of the English mystics."

Few texts have had held such interest or been the object of such enduring devotion as has Julian of Norwich's 14th-century classic A Revelation of Love. This great work--along with The Cloud of Unknowing and Teresa of Avila's The Interior Castle--form the very heart of Western mysticism, and each generation has cherished its beautiful poetry and profound account of a soul's quest for the divine. This new translation of Julian's mystical writings offers today's reader immediate access to this most powerful spiritual of books written in English. Julian's message of God's intimate and enabling love is revealed as both beguiling and inescapable. The poetry and rhythmic structure of the original Middle English text are respected, yet it is given fresh immediacy since it is now rendered in inclusive language for the first time ever. Moreover Julian's key ideas are easily identified-even by newcomers to her unique system of thought-by means of an original and authoritative linking commentary at the head of each key chapter, as well as continuing support from highly informative footnotes and a detailed glossary of the main terms used.

Julian of Norwich, a 14th century mystic Christian and one of the first women to write in the English language, had, in 1373, a series of visions she called “showings.” She spent the rest of her life understanding and interpreting them for herself and future generations. This book has both the short and long versions of what she wrote. Penguin Classics are always well-produced. The size of the print is a bit small, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from savoring this amazing work. It makes you think!

A wonderful spiritual journey. Julian of Norwich was devoted to prayer and personal mortification, but did so with deep joy. She did not see her way of living as a sacrifice but a way of complete giving of herself to God. It may be worded in language not familiar to us in the world of today, but it is an incredible work of devotion and love of one who wants to give all for the love she experiences in her prayers and life with God. An incredible woman.

This text highlights the Medieval Saint's explication of the mothering nature of God in her divine visions. For students and devotés of Julian of Norwich, this book provides insight and inspiration. I am an English teacher turned seminarian and am selective on several levels. This book provided insightful historical and theological context for my research into the medieval church's contribution to the canon of the Anglican Communion.

This is exactly what I wanted. Most of the translations I have looked at haul Julian into the modern age, and are more like paraphrases. This translator only changes words that have utterly disappeared from our vocabulary, and (as far as I can tell so far) does not alter her vision at all.

Yet another great find printed by Dover Books. Dover, you are wonderful!

Everything was wonderful as to the delivery and the book as a product, but the translation took beautiful old English (middle English?), and translated it to modern speak. Julian of Norwich spoke of God as being "homely" as in family, kin, a loved one from home and reduced it to "familiar" or "friendly". It also had, perhaps a feminist angle as "men" was translated as "people". In doing so I believe the translators insistence that she was faithful to the intent was truthful as far as it goes, but it lost most of the charm, and warmth that a more readable translation, while keeping with as much of the original language would permit, would have conveyed.

If an individual is seeking a greater understanding of the Love of God for human beings this is a magnificent help. It is important to get Elizabeth Spearing's translation (from the 14th century Olde English). She has maintained the phrasing of Julian so that one feels one is listening to Julian, herself. Other translaters bring the prose to a more modern cadence, thus losing the sound of reality.

This is a good translation of the revelations, as the author spells out exactly where he is coming from in the Introduction. Be sure to read this before hitting the content so you will know from where you are coming from. It is a more difficult read for those not used to Olde English, but one that is good to have at hand along with a more modern translation.

Julian received extraordinary visions of the Lord Jesus after being near death with an illness. Her accounts are sound and grounded in God's word. Be advised that it is written in archaic English terms and phrases but I have found that ChatGPT is excellent for interpretation and expounding on her visions. I highly recommend this book.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 31, 2008
I live in Norwich and am a member of the (at present) small number of admirers of the work of Julian of Norwich. "Mother" Julian is however being discovered by people all over the world and I believe that a time will come when her Revelations will become very famous and widespread - the world is just not yet ready for the details of her extraordinary experiences in Christian mysticism. Her writings are so different and challenging - remember too, she was expressing her mysticism in a time when she could have been excommunicated from the church - or, worst scenario, ? burnt as an heretic.

The Church of St Julian is still a fully functioning one in the "red light" area of Norwich - a curious oasis of peace in the maelstrom of a space full of potential and actual misery where sex workers are forced to ply their "trade" to support their addiction to "Class
    A" drugs.

Attached to the church is Julian's "cell" where she lived as an anchorite and gave advice to the population here during her lifetime. For those open "to the vibes" (yes, I'm an ageing "hippy", upon entering the small chapel designated as her cell, a wonderful presence and feeling of peace and disembodied love may be experienced. Truly a place where the "Holy Spirit" dwells. I strongly recommend coming to visit St Julian's to all inclined to visit this remarkable place [it's on the internet]. And, by the way, although the windows get smashed from time to time in the cell - such is life - the tranquility endures.

I first encountered her work (sadly unread!) in the philosophy department at the library at my university (Uni of East Anglia) and have been fascinated by her writings for the past twenty years. The concept of "God as Mother" is so radical for the time in which she lived and is still a revolutionary concept - particularly with the current row about women being ordained as Bishops. (Surely the Spirit of Christ can dwell in all of us - gender is irrelevant? - For us convinced Christians we all seek to become like Him.)

All I can say about the book itself is READ IT - and share it - it can be consulted upon a daily basis - just as if Julian is still living today - which, in the spiritual sense, is so. I recommend the modern translation unless you have a grasp of late mediaeval/early modern English though. It is my favorite book in my library. There is an abridged "pocket" version of her Revelations - also beautiful - which are useful as an aid to meditation and contemplation wherever one may be.
