Spurgeon's Sermons Volume 1: 1855 - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Called the "Prince of Preachers," Charles Spurgeon was a world-renowned preacher. At the young age of 22, Spurgeon was already preaching to audiences of over 10,000 people. Coming from a Reformed Baptist tradition, he emphasized the gospels and the demands of Christ upon believers' lives in his sermons. This volume contains 50 sermons--all preached in 1855--from the beginning of Spurgeon's career. This volume is part of a series, which allows one to read Spurgeon's sermons in chronological order. His sermons are never unduly complex or flowery, but immensely practical and encouraging. They are full of wit and concrete examples. Countless people throughout the world have profited from Spurgeon's moving words.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (19 June 1834[1] – 31 January 1892) was an English Particular Baptist preacher.

Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the church of his day.

Spurgeon was pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years.

While at the Metropolitan Tabernacle he built an Almshouse, the Stockwell Orphanage and encouraged his congregation to engage actively with the poor of Victorian London. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him posthumously.

Spurgeon authored sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, and hymns. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. He is said to have produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills are said to have held his listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle, and many Christians hold his writings in exceptionally high regard among devotional literature.

Wish I could have heard him in person. Truely a Holy Spirit led pastor. If all other religions would read this mans sermons and other documents like Around the Wicket Gate, I cannot understand, much to their demise, how they could not want to run to the world's ONLY LORD AND SAVIOR--Jesus Christ. By no other name under the sun can man be saved!
Jesus took all the sins of the world that ever were or ever will be with Him to the cross. He died for us!
Just ask Jesus to come into your heart and turn your life over to Him. If you will do that and accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior YOU will be saved. You cannot buy it. You cannot go to church reguarly and earn it. Jesus did it all, once, for all who will accept it. Believe through faith.
    Come, Lord Jesus.

Quite a lot has been written about Spurgeon and his theology. This review doesn't focus on the content, but on the navigation of the Kindle version of this book. The rating is for the navigation, not the sermon content.

Two Kindle versions are available of this collection of Spurgeon's sermons. One has a working table of contents that provides hyperlinks to the individual sermons. The other version does not have a TOC. The version with TOC has hyperlinks to the scripture verses that are referenced in the sermons. Buy this version. It is worth the two extra dollars.

I would suggest that a link be added at the end of each sermon that allows you to go back to the table of contents. That would simplify use on Kindle for PC and other Kindle software products.

Having read a previous review that commented on this item having a TOC in it and another 99 cent item that didn't have a TOC with it, I decided to purchase this one. Reading the 3rd sermon entitled "The Sin Of Unbelief" I discovered that entire sentences was missing from it when I compared it to the original messages on the "Spurgeon Archives". I also checked other sources for Bro. Spurgeons sermons and that also confirmed that for some reason long sentences are simply left out. To enhance something is to improve or make it better, this has not been done. I sent mine back and got a refund.
