Diagonal crack on binding or purfling? On the fence with this one. But it’s beautiful

Diagonal crack on binding or purfling? On the fence with this one. But it’s beautiful
I just received my C9 Parlor guitar today and I’m pleasantly surprised with the quality of sound and aesthetics exceeding my expectations. It is more beautiful in person than photos. However, I’m concerned about a small diagonal line in the binding/purfling, that might be a crack which would compromise the integrity of the instrument. I’m still looking it over and inspecting it because I only have had a brief moment to simply inbox it and check it wasn’t delivered with major defects that are obvious to the eye. Looks good thus far, but will take it to be seen by a local luthier to be sure. I am on the fence on whether to keep this or buy a custom made Kremona Fiesta FC 7/8 size which would only be $100 or so more as I already spoke to them last week. I figured I’d give Cordoba Luthier series a try first. I like the deep mellow sound of the C9’s Mahogany back and sides but, I’m wondering if I should have opted for the C10 parlor with the Rosewood back and sides instead. (That’s what Kremona would do for me as well if I decide to order from them instead.) I don’t know how I feel about the treble sounds yet. Seems like they’re a bit plastic?? It does seem to have decent sustain. I have yet to check for buzzing and or dead notes. I will do that later tonight when I get back home. The seller did a decent job packing the guitar. The case is nice too. I will update more soon.

I'm very happy with this guitar. It arrived just a few days ago. I've been playing a long time but mostly steel string acoustics. This guitar is light and even with the Cristal Corum high tension strings feels very easy on the fingertips I suppose that's part of the allure of nylon. This guitar is beautiful. It shines like glass. The strings were already in tune right out of the case. It's a nice case, form fitting and also light but more protective than a gig bag. This guitar has been sounding better by the day as I acclimate to it. Artificial harmonics are easy to get on this instrument with these strings. Tunes by Sor and Tarrega sound better on this guitar than on acoustic. I would describe this guitar's sound as full, almost chorusy in nature as opposed to super clear. It's a matter of taste and I'm just going with it. You can do things to clarify the sound if you want but sometimes a big wall of sound is what you want. If you have Bridgett Memikides Compendium, the first two studies sound fantastic on this guitar as does the 3rd 'The Guiliani Allegro' which she plays at 100bpm. I play it at something like 55bpm. To me 100bpm shouldn't be humanly possible ! The action was set fairly low but the guitar comes with instructions on how to adjust the truss rod. I won't be doing that any time soon. The guitar should be kept in the case when not in use and at 45-55% humidity and 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit. I've set up a small room humidifier in the room the guitar is stored in to rectify the situation. I turn the humidifier off at night and close the case and the humidity is preserved overnight. I will not zip and unzip the case because eventually the zipper will fail that way. When I need to actually move the guitar I'll be assured of quality transport. I use high heat canola oil to revitalize the fret board and a little Murphy's oil soap solution for the painted waxed sections. Winters are hard on guitars with the low humidity's and fast temperature changes so don't expect your fine solid wood guitar to stay in perfect tune under those extreme conditions. This is a living piece of wood and will expand and contract accordingly. I keep a vibration head stock tuner handy and generally stop playing when the furnace comes on. Once the temperature stabilizes I re-tune and start again. The guitar doesn't fall out by much but by enough and spring will come soon enough and this will then be unnecessary. If anything changes I'll come back and amend but for now I'm living in a fool's paradise over this purchase. Thanks for reading !

The craftsmanship of this is astonishing. The finish is smooth, all the joinings are tight; it's a thing of beauty. The case really adds to the value. I am a new guitarist, so I can't really speak much to the playability, but even in my inept hands, it's vibrant, almost seeming alive. I couldn't be happier. I have my first classical guitar lesson this week, so I'm excited to see what my teacher has to say. It may need the action lowered just a touch, which from what I gather is not an unusual adjustment to have to make for any new guitar. It doesn't feel like a small instrument, but I'm short (5'8") with short arms and small hands, and it feels very comfortable.

I’m enjoying playing this classical guitar so much. It was a difficult choice on deciding what guitar would be best for me. After years and years of buying guitars I realized I had never really purchased a really nice classical guitar which is my favorite. I’m so happy I chose this smaller size. It’s more comfortable to play and it sounds sweet. At the price point I originally was going to go with the top sounding but realize playability is also a top factor. Happy happy! I would not have spent time on reviewing otherwise.

    Cordoba C9 Parlor Guitar Review:

Construction - excellent inside & outside quality construction with nice glossy finish despite low quality tuning keys & polyfoam case. No noticeable construction defects. Surprisingly good woods used and guitar intonation was acceptable.
Playability - very easy comfortable playing & neck/string action was very good out of the box. Good factory or dealer set up was appreciated.
Tone - balanced & semi-sweet, but not as open and muffled; probably caused by thick glossy polymer finish coating that prevented free wood vibrations. Overtones/sustain was good but not exceptional for concert performance level. I compared C9 Parlor’s tone to Kenny Hill’s 628mm New World Player (all wood ~ $1,700), 630 mm Romeo Creations Parlor P6 (all wood ~ $1,000), and 650 mm Manuel Contreras I (all wood >$4,000+) guitars that had traditional Spanish heel design. Test songs were Classical Gas by Williams, Lagrima by Tarrega, Torija by Torroba, & Scott Tennant’s Wild Mountain Thyme. C9 Parlor could not transmit sound vibrations to player’s body like what the other 3 guitars did, but the C9 had adequate volume when played harder.
Value - C9 parlor is an excellent value for beginner guitarist despite having inexpensive tuning keys, flimsy polyfoam case, & muffled tone. I opine that C9 parlor has better value and tone than the other lower cost Cordoba models and slightly edging out the Romeo Creations Parlor P6. But the 628 mm New World Player was tonally better than the C9 Parlor, despite being both designed by Kenny Hill, although the New World Player is twice the C9 Parlor’s cost. Of course the Manuel Contreras classical guitar was superior to all the parlor guitars.
Summary - Initially, I planned to return this Cordoba C9 Parlor, but after playing it a few days, I decided to keep it and sell my Romeo Creations Parlor P6 guitar.

Note: please excuse my mini test performance because I wasn't properly sitting upright & guitar was tilted.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice tone, a surprising light weight
Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2017
    Style: CedarVerified Purchase
The guitar approaches the perfection. It has a high volume, nice tone, a surprising light weight, a really nice look, a nice finish (but I would prefer semi-gloss than gloss). The strings are perfectly adjusted, not too high at the 12th fret, not too low. It comes with a nice case, with a comportement inside for capot and strings (It would be a good idea an outside small comportement for a footrest, little more room for music sheet, and why not, a comportment for a stand. That would be the perfect guitar case !). I am really satisfied. The packing lacked some protection: only a cartoon box over the guitar case. The pack received a shock during transportation which did affect the case (not apparent as the outside case surface is hessian), but the case did protect efficiently the guitar, a real good case. An extra protection over the nice guitar case would be indicated.

This guitar is incredible. Beautiful tone; long sustain; super loud. It is far and above every other guitar that I've played in this price range (admittedly, I haven't played too many guitars, but this one was clearly the best of the few that I've played). And it came with a really nice case!

I really can not believe it. I noticed that one wood frame inside the guitar is broken when I took the guitar out of the nice looking hard case. This guitar looks beautiful, but the quality control is poor.
Another problem found in the morning, there is a 3 inch long crack in the wood at the back of guitar.
The beautifully looking guitar will go back to Amazon today.

Update: I ordered another one. Will update the review later.
