Ok..so..saw a Rayovac BRSLRK marked down from $3.88 to $3.00 at Walmart.
Pushed the "on" button to test the battery..no response.
Hmm..well..maybe there is some sort of tricky "remove before flight" anti-discharge tabs tucked underneath where it can't be seen...Took it home..unwrapped it..dead on arrival.
Open it up..voltage across the LIR2032 cell is..ZERO volts.
Either it self discharged itself to death, or it's shorted.

..after two hours under a bright lamp..voltage across cell is a whopping .250 V.
Getting the cell up to anywhere near 3.6 volts is going to take a while.

If this cell self discharges at the rate that I suspect that it does..it's
going to require being in the sun or under a lamp on a regular basis.

It's normal habitat is going to be in a drawer with the car keys or in trouser
pockets..maybe in a storage cubby in the car. It's not going to see the sun all that often. So when you need it..it's going to be..dead.
I strongly suspect that I am going to be swapping in a standard 5v 2032 cell and changing the internal resistor to compensate for the higher voltage. For me, the
whole point of having a "micro light" in my pocket is... to have "light in my pocket".
I have used other tiny keyfob lights for years..I dont recall having to replace cells very often. Having a "fob lite" that I MUST remember to place in the sun
every few days or it "goes dead" is a show stopper. [Back to the drawing board, Beeker!]

The original design is for my purposes...somewhat self defeating.
It is also annoying that there is NO useage information whatsoever on the package.
If it is normal for the battery to be totally dead on arrival, it would be considerate of Rayovac to state this. There is plenty of room on the package to state that the light has a "lifetime warranty"..in three languages.
"Return defective product to Spectrum Brands". [whoever and wherever they might be..]
Seriously..no address? Whoever signed off this packaging as "ready for prime time",
um..it's not. It needs a rework. [Attn: Rayovac, this was not a confidence building exercise.
    [Over and out.]

Battery seemed old or something because it does not last as long as the one I replaced. The previous one was a gift and was so handy that when I accidentally broke the solar panel by dropping something heavy on it I had to have another. The first one would go for weeks in my pocket while this one wants charging (by leaving in the sun) at least weekly.

-Very bright light to find the key hole
-Handy, bright light to find your kids toy dropped under the restaurant booth seat
    -Find your dropped change

This little gem will provide 3 hours of useable light after a few hours of charging in the sun. This is good enough to put some light where you need it if all else fails. It weighs next to nothing and has a cool design. I attach it to my knife sheath as a part of my emergency survival kit in case my primary equipment is lost or fails. I noticed that some of them on the Walmart ($3.88) shelf didn't work when I "pressed to test" so choose wisely! It would get 5 stars if it had a real on switch instead of having to hold it on.

    Update 22 Aug 2011:

I was so impressed with the first that I bought a second. After a few months or so the first lost it's ability to hold a charge. After a full day in the sun it would shine bright for only half an hour and would not work at all after setting overnight. The second I bought went through the same process... oh well, back to batteries. Just keepin' it real here and lowered my rating from 4 to 2 stars.

I'd suggest you only use this for little things like finding the keyholes in your life, and only attempt to charge it if you notice the light getting dim. But it should be okay for a keychain that sits indoors under room lights. The reason is, I took one of these apart and found that there is no charge controller for the battery whatsoever (or any electronics other than a resistor for the LED), and the open circuit voltage of the solar cell is really high, like 8 volts or so. The Li-ion battery inside is only 3.7 V and overcharging kills them Li-ion batts. So I'd say this device is made to work with room lights and intermittent charging, as well as occasional, intermittent use. Basically it's made to be really cheap and sell lots of them as cool impulse buys and stocking stuffers, which will then stop working later from all the battery abuse.
