I have bought blocks like this is past from amazon, and they were underweight. 9 pounds for 1 block and 9.8 for another.
I bought 3 of these on this order, and ALL of them weigh 10 pound each, EXACTLY 10 pounds each.
I cannot see how it is advertised as 11 pounbd blocks when they are underweight. It's a bit nit-picky, but in total order, I was 3 pounds underweight. That may not seem like much, but when you realize that 250g = 1 gallon plant pot after coco is expanded, this means I am short 12 gallons of expanded coco coir. I grow in 3 gallon pots, so 4 pots are empty. :(

Amazon fulfilled the order, so they should realize they are short changing customers on this item.

I have not purchased coco soil before so I have nothing to compair it against, all I know is the shipping on here said 11 lbs. and the brick weighs 8. some odd lbs. I wanted to wait and see if I could get some tomato and tomatillo seedlings to sprout in this before leaving the review. For good measure I used Plastic Cups instead of Styrofoam Cups with self-made holes in them as I usually do. The Tomatillo's sprouted first after 5- days planting at 1/4 inch, the Manzana Organic Tomato Seeds started sprouting on the 6th day. The best thing to do with this big brick instead of wasting it all on 17 gal. if you are not in need of that much is to take a wood saw to it, it cuts through it great. I box taped up the amazon box it came in so none would leak including taping up the inside bottom of amazon box, I then placed the brick at largest height and easily sawed of some pieces to use with the Plastic Cups. I would say this is worth it, a bag of peat will cost you close to $10.00 at a local big name retailer, this is way better than peat moss, ou definitely get more out of this, than a bag of peat moss, and having all natural coco soil in larger quantity and only $5.00 or so more with free super saver shipping is an awesome deal, I believe I got lucky and found a great brand the first time as I looked at reviews today at other brands and not all of them are great or the product is $7.00 and is about a lb. or less. This product is a definite 5-Star after seeing it in action..

UPDATE 12/29 ordered a 2nd block just to have some (lotta) extra. excellent stuff. NB no nutritive value really, so get some fertilizer appropriate to whatever you're planting.

ORIGINAL review 12/24:

this is amazing stuff - clean, sterile, perfect consistency. you may want to look for boxes of smaller pellets if you only plan on getting a little at a time - this block, you either make the whole thing at once (thassa lotta dirt) or else take a knife or saw to it and mix up the amount you need.

I will say again: I love how clean this stuff is. no parasites, no bugs, no extra crap of any kind. no gnats flying out, no tiny little worms that you aren't sure are good or bad!

in the past I was always skeptical of how could fibre from coconuts really be a soil alternative - but once you reconstitute it you absolutely cannot tell the difference. I will never buy potting soil or peat/sphagnum moss again.

This is an excellent product! I placed this inside a 27 gallon container to hydrate and 12 hours later, after breaking it all up by hand, it fills more than half! So 17 gal. of product is a very accurate description, but you do have to break it all up or it will stay clumped up and won't fully expand.

It absorbed water fast and swelled right up and at first I was happy because almost all seeds popped in 2-3 days. But then I noticed that they ALL stopped growing by week two and that there was a huge amount of salt building up on the top of the coco coir around the plants.
I flushed everything three times and started foliar feeding as too much salt locks the nutrients from getting to the plants roots, hence they stop growing and die!!!
I read that some companies prewash and some don't well it would have been nice to know this one didn't but there was nothing in the packaging about this product, in fact it came in clear plastic wrap with no instructions or other information.I also noticed like another reviewer stated a lot of debris in the blocks.
This was a MAJOR set back for me as in Alaska we have a very short growing season so now I am set back several weeks, which means less food for my family.
I was sorely disappointed in the product.

I have now bought some Hydrofarm coco coir and will see how it stands up against Kempf coco coir.

This stuff is great! Just add water, let it sit for a few hours, and POOF! you have 17 gallons of quality coco fiber. I chose coco over peat simply for price. You get much more product with this for your money than you could ever get with peat moss. Plus it is great for sandy soils, as it helps moisture retention. I definitely recommend this, and I'm sure I will buy more in the spring!

I find it funny people pay big bucks for this stuff. This is coco pith and is an EXCELLENT medium for growing, I would suggest letting it soak over night in ph proper water. After soaking it for 12-24 hours drain it and then rinse it with approx 10-20 gals of ph proper water; Always check your run off to see results.

This is the best deal on Amazon as far as coco goes, I think. I would buy a hundred blocks of this if I could afford it. I think next spring I will fill several 50 gallon smart pots with this stuff and grow a few lil pepper plants. ;)

I highly recommend this stuff, rinse it, check it, grow!
