This is a very nice notebook. It’s smaller than I expected (can’t fault seller for this, dimensions are in description, just double check that) and therefore the price is a bit steep. However, it’s the nicest notebook I’ve ever had, and will consider the more expensive and bigger ones for the future.

This is the absolute best sketch book out there. They come in many sizes, but I only use two, the smallest and the medium size. The spiral bind allows you to completely flip the pages over flat. The steel of the spiral bind is just strong enough that it doesn't easily bend out of shape after many uses and is a more elegant double loop that has a switch back instead of a constant spiral which makes it a bit unique. It is also just large enough to hold most pens within so you can always leave a pen with the pad. There are about 4 clear plastic sleeves in the back that you can slip paper or cards or anything loose you find useful inside of for safe keeping. The square grid is just the right size, approximately 1/4 inch and so light that it never overpowers the weight of what you are writing with. The rule lines are made of japanese styled dotted lines rather than a solid rule line, and they are a very fine blue hue which nicely offsets the yellow tinted paper. The strap allows you to keep your place or simply strap other items onto the cover, and obviously keeps it tightly closed when packed away and also helps to keep items in the sleeves from so easily falling out. Each page is also perforated and can easily be torn free of the frayed edges. The rounded corners of the ends are a nice touch and keep the ends from becoming worn like a sharp corner might after many uses. I believe this is an old German company that was taken over by a Japanese company maybe, I really have no idea, but it seems like the perfect combination. The writing on the cover is obviously German, but they are made in Japan. I have been collecting these for well over ten years and they used to have a sort of cult following. I've purchased them all over the world from Germany to Japan to Minneapolis, San Francisco and New York. Super7 a Japanese comic and stationary store in SF used to manufacture their own identical rip off when they became to expensive to import. They are very difficult to find but well known in the design community for those who keep a sketch book on hand. I've filled over 12. The paper is quite fine, but not too fine. The Stabilio pointvisco .5 ballpoint pen will bleed through but any felt tip fine point under .5 should be fine, and any ballpoint like Onyx Uni-Ball .5 is perfect. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

I ordered this Rollbahn b/c I specifically like the brand - & was sent a rhodia notebook that looked very similar. While it is an OK notebook, it is slightly different and I was disappointed. Also b/c the rhodia I got I saw in stores and went out of my way to track this one down as a gift. Now on the day the gift will be given to someone who is familiar with both and wanted to get more of the rollbahn, it is not as unique as I thought. Just more of the everyday notebook he uses.

The size is just right for a pants pocket and has enough flex to reside there comfortably. And the doubled ring binding is a good diameter, enabling the pad to open easily and lay flat w/o being bulky. Writing & drawing doesn't feel cramped or compromised at all.

Also the paper is unusually nice for a grid pad - just enough texture to provide some feedback and good thickness and absorption for a fountain pen w/ wetter ink, and graphite as well. The pages tear cleanly from the rings w/o damage or risk of distorting the rings. And the grid print is well balanced - subtle but still sharp.
