- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2011I ordered this controller simply because of my love for the movies. Reviews had said it can be hard handle, that the controls are sticky and the cord is a nuisance but I found all three complaints to be non existent with my controller.
First and foremost the controller DOES work with other PS3 games beside the Tron Legacy game. It is also wired and unlike the regular PS3 controllers it does NOT feature Sixaxis (the ability to interact by moving your controller as seen in games such as "Lair" and "Little Big Planet"). It is built like a PS2 controller though it is NOT compatible with that console. These were all questions I had about the controller before purchasing it so I want to make these facts clear.
The controls were not sticky whatsoever with my controller. I never experienced delayed communication between the controller and the PS3 either as some reviewers did. I also did not find the cord to be a nuisance because it's quite long (I was able to sit seven or more feet away from my PS3 and use my controller comfortably).
The lighting on the controller is fantastic! It lights up just as any piece of technology in the Tron films would and the blue light is quite bright (but not obnoxiously so). The collectors box the controller comes in is also fun and perfect for display if you're a collector. These controllers are rare and definitely worth the price. I highly recommend it for any fan of Tron.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2010As soon as you power up your PS3 system and see the flicker of light zap through the controller soon followed by the steady blue glow of light and you will be transported to The Grid.
Seeing the controller come on for the first time floored me. I couldn't believe how well it lit up in its Bright Blue accents.
Each part of the controller is well thought out. All symbols and letters on the controller are done in TRON script. The finish on the controller is beautiful. Like the shiny Black outer skin of a lightcycle that flows into grips with hexagonal designs like the Legacy suits. The superior ergo design of the controller easily trumps the standard issue controller.
The wireless feature is not missed here. The use of wired tech is understandable and easily dealt with. Having a constant powersource to keep the contoller illuminated throughout gameplay is much better than having to stop gaming and recharge the controller every hour or so. I don't know why there would be such an outcry just because it it wired. Unless you are a gamer who might trip over the wire while reaching for your Doritos and sugary energy drink.
Each controller comes in an exquisite display box and is a numbered unit out of a total 20,000 units. There is a numbered plate on the back of the controller itself.
I love this controller and my wireless controllers are now collecting dust on them because of it.
End of Line.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2011It looks cool and the lights are very clear, however the downside is that it is wired so movement and large rooms are a challenge. The controller also doesnt contain sixaxis so is uncompatible with many of the current games in the market.
After 1 month the controller started to continually scroll to the right when turned on, but could be reset by unplugging and reconnecting. After a further month however the X button started sticking and staying in when pressed. After less than 3 months of use its been rendered useless, and worse still Amazon will not accept responsibility for it. As the fault has occurred outside of the 30 day window they have told me to contact the manufacturer and have to all other extents washed their hands of the matter.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2015I bought one of these a couple of years ago. The first one had to be returned after it straight-up stopped working for no discernable reason within 72 hours. That should give you an indication of where this is going.
I got it exchanged, and when I recieved my new one, it held up for about 4 months before the X button started sticking. Really badly.
So I figured I'd open it up and clean the contacts. It was probably a simple fix, right?
If you think it's that simple, prepare for trouble. You may possibly need the jaws of life to get this thing open. After removing the screws, I was unable to take any of the casing off. Even attempting to pry it open lightly resulted in one of the screw mounts snapping and the lovely rubber on the sides of the controller being ripped into by the plastic underneath. In fact, nothing aside from the handles would even budge. I gave up because I didn't want to damage the controller any more than it already had been, and it's really just a slap in the face. They should have made the buttons out of whatever is holding this thing together.
As far as the pros of this controller go, I won't rave about them because pretty much every other review here hits them on the head. The controller is really comfortable to hold, the buttons feel "soft" (when they actually work), and the controller itself looks bloody amazing when it's lit up.
The cons (not pertaining to the problem above) are also to do with the make of the thing. In the few months it worked, the rubber wore most of the way off of the analog sticks, the paint on the X button is completely gone, the controller is prone to random glitchy movements after being in use for a few hours, and the L2 & R2 buttons are pretty bad. Unlike every other button on the controller, which feels easy to press, you have to slam on them to get them to respond, because they take forever to push down and they're so soft upon making contact that it doesn't feel like the button's pushed in all the way.
I loved this controller for the brief time it worked but unless you're a collector I just can't recommend it because of how problematic it turned out to be for me (and judging by the rest of the reviews by non-collectors, everyone else).
There are better controllers than this. Hell, Afterglow controllers- which are made by the same company, PDP- rock the light-up gimmick as well, and while they don't look as sleek, still look really cool in a dark room. They perform better than this controller, and I never had a problem with buttons getting stuck inside of mine.
