Bede's Ecclesiastical History of England - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

The Ecclesiastical History of England examines the religious and political history of the Anglo-Saxons from the fifth century to 731 AD. St. Bede's historical survey opens with a broad outline of Roman Britain's geography and history. St. Bede pays special attention to the disagreement between Roman and Celtic Christians, the dates and locations of significant events in the Christian calendar, and political upheaval during the 600's. St. Bede collected information from a variety of monasteries, early Church and government writings, and the oral histories of Rome and Britain. This book is useful to people looking for a brief survey of religious and political figures and events in Anglo-Saxon history. Readers should recognize that St. Bede's religious and political biases are subtly reflected in his historiography, diminishing its objectivity. Nonetheless, his Ecclesiastical History of England is one of the most important texts of the Anglo-Saxon history. The book's historical import is evidenced by the fact that nearly 200 hand written copies were produced in the Middle Ages. St. Bede's text has since been translated into several different languages.

St. Bede the Venerable is known as the first Historian of the English people. If you are interested in the History of the British Isles and the origins of the many groups that came together, fought, conquered and were defeated, or settled and intermarried, this is a must. It is wonderful that this History is available now in the Kindle Format, and at a price which is very "friendly".
This is no 'dry and difficult' or boring "Tome". It is a fascinating look into the early 'misty' and somewhat violent origins of an emerging people. Although the title "Ecclesiastical" is accurate in that St. Bede writes about many of the early saints and martyrs, prelates and "heresies", do not let it discourage you. This is a Classic and a wonderful "read".

The translation is difficult to understand in places but once you get used to the language it does give a fascinating insight into the development of the early Christian church in England. There are very few authoritative texts on England from this period and this book gives a splendid window into the vernacular used in the 8th Century. It is interesting to note some of the editor's comments regarding a few inaccuracies in the history Bede recounts.

This is a particularly specialist book that would appeal to scholars interested in early Christian or English History. I am not a scholar, so it might have a certain wider interest too.

Very useful background to Bede's history. Put the story of Bede into historical context for me which is what I wanted.
