Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 93 ratings

Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching is a second century guide for Christian converts. After disappearing for nearly two millennia, an Armenian copy of St. Irenaeus' guidebook was discovered in 1904. Current versions of this ancient text have been translated from the Armenian, a language which greatly resembles the Greek in which it was originally transcribed. St. Irenaeus wanted to set out the main points of the Apostolic message, which was handed down to the Church from Old Testament Scriptures. St. Irenaeus explains the doctrine of Christianity as it was understood by the educated believers of his day. He defends the grounds of belief and aims to demonstrate the truth of the ancient Biblical prophecy. As a result, his project is both theological and historical. Even today, St. Irenaeus' book of guidelines serves to help Christians find salvation and refute heretics.

This edition features an artistic cover, a new promotional introduction, an index of scripture references, links for scripture references to the appropriate passages, and a hierarchical table of contents which makes it possible to navigate to any part of the book with a minimum of page turns.

About the Author

St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons (115-202 AD), was a sharp and formative force in the early church. As a hearer of Polycarp, who was a hearer of John the Apostle, he is a veritable grandson to the true apostolic teaching. Most famous for his work "Against Heresies," he fought persistently to maintain the traditions handed to him in the face of gnosticism and error. He stands tall in history as an example of sure apologetics and guaranteed orthodoxy.

An interesting exposition of the gospel, principally in alignment with modern day understanding but with a few wrinkles. However, the apparent references (referring to the numbers in square brackets) are not included. .

Great little fact filled book explaining, not interpreting the Bible. For Christians, understanding the beliefs of the Early Church it critical in understanding the Scriptures. I purchased Against Heresy at the same time which works well as a reference book.

There are several versions of this book available for purchase, you would be wise to purchase one other than this, but be sure to purchase at least one. Short, direct, influential.

Skip all the introduction material, and just enjoy Irenaeus. Many theological works preceded Iraenus' "Demonstration," but Demonstration was the first book of pure theology. Previous works by Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Polycarp, and Justin all aimed at exhortation or apologetics rather than simply theology. I came to Irenaeus by Gustaf Aulén's high recommendation in his stellar work "Christus Victor."

It is interesting to see how early the depth of Christ centered theology was promulgated in the church. Doctrines like the resurrection, the virgin birth, substitutionary atonement, etc. were not late developments, but mainstays from the beginning.
