- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI would highly recommend the content of this book as being essential to the understanding and application of the Christian faith. However this particular book has a font size of about point 8. It is TINY. A strain for young eyes and harsh for old ones. Get the book "Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers," just not this particular version. BTW: Free audiobook can be found at Librivox.com. I have both hard copy and audiobook.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDo not read this book unless you are serious about the sin we all struggle with. The insights and directions Owen gives are clear and practical - even though they may be uncomfortable. This is meat not milk and so far above the typical offereings we find at book stores today that it is a must rread for any believer who is serious about glorifying God by combating the sin in their lives.

The best part I liked is the extraordinary means to mortify sin, Ch. 10 and 11
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2015If this isn't the best deal in New York it's in the top two. The only other that may compare is the purchase of Manhattan from the Indians. Step by step conquer sin for less than $2.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024I compared this digital version with my hard copy.
You will see in chapter 6 it says, " What it is to Mortify a hat it is to mortify a sin in general, which will make farther way for particular directions, is nextly to be considered.
a hat???? I wanted to read this book in my Kindle that's why I got the digital copy. I was in chapter 6. There was already an error in the first sentence I read. What more in the rest of the book! Waste of my digital credits!

Amazon KundeReviewed in Germany on July 8, 20165.0 out of 5 stars The best most useful and clearest book on the subject.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseJohn Owen has comparatively simple language compared to some other puritans in this book and it is easy to read and understand and though it's short he manages to very clearly and concisely brilliantly biblicaly argue and cover the main elements in the process of sanctification.
A. BlowerReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 6, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhat a brilliant book!
Every Christian ought to have this and read it and dissect it thoroughly on a regular basis. Crucial stuff and nobody teaches it. Probably because nobody knows it or even thinks it or even considers it necessary... Because we have such a limp version of Christianity round here these days. If you want to walk closely with Christ, you need this book.
Edit: I hear people moaning about how difficult he is to read and how long it takes. Here is my response to that.
Owen doesn't write with "complexity", he writes with "richness". Most Christians cannot cope with richness of language. Imagine working in an office. Now imagine doing the same work in an office lined with the most beautiful works of art that have ever been created. It would be "better" to work in the second office... But it would be a lot harder to actually focus on the work! This is how I think about Owen's writing. I find reading modern writers to be an exercise in nobody having a great deal to say, but being very slow and patronising in how they say it! Owen on the other hand, is someone who not only has something worth listening to, but expresses it in a beautiful, compelling, and forthright manner. Problem is, it's easy to get lost in the beauty and forget what we actually came here to do!
1. Therefore, the way I recommend reading Owen is: QUICKLY. Don't get stuck in the illustrations or the language - stay on point. You must learn to appreciate the wonderful pearls that line the way of his argumentation without becoming entranced by them. You will also find the language easier to negotiate if you just plow through it.
2. The second thing that I would point out is that I think Owen writes the same way that he would preach. If you can read it as though you are hearing it preached, it will make more sense. If in doubt, preach it out loud yourself!
3. Don't necessarily get hung up on words you don't know. Often you can use the context to make an educated guess as to what the word means, and then you can smash on without losing momentum. That said, often it will become apparent that you really DO need to look up a certain word in which case you had better do so because the word will have such a specific and precise meaning that it will unlock the whole passage.
4. Write a structural contents of the book. The book is divided into chapters but the chapters don't necessarily follow the structure of the argument. It is worth having your own contents layout so that you know which part of the argument you are discussing at any one time.
I hope that helps.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was another book I was really looking forwarding to reading but when I opened the book I was shocked at how small Amazon had done the font!? I believe this was published by Amazon, do you not open the books to check the size of the font?
My eyes are good, but this is impossible to read without a magnifying glass
