The Sovereignty of God - Enhanced Version 1.1 Edition, Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 824 ratings

In his book The Sovereignty of God, A.W. Pink outlines the sovereignty of God from a Calvinist standpoint. He defines God's sovereignty, and then explains how God's sovereignty is characterized in creation and salvation. Then Pink discusses the relationship between God's sovereignty and the human will. Finally, Pink describes the appropriate attitude Christians should take towards God's sovereignty, and considers several difficulties that Christian may face in adopting this attitude. The issues Pink raises in this book have previously been addressed by many prominent figures such as St. Augustine, St. Aquinas, Calvin, and Jonathan Edwards. Pink studied these wise men and draws from their conclusions in his own writing, but ultimately, the author places his perspective in light of God's Word. Pink strongly believed that true faith rests "not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God." Pink wants his readers to gain a firm grasp on the biblical text rather than the secondary literature, and he aims to highlight Scripture in his book.

About the Author

A. W. PINK (1886–1952) was born in Nottingham, England, and became a Christian in his early twenties. Desiring to grow in knowledge of the Bible, Pink immigrated to the United States to study at Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago, Illinois. From 1925 to 1928, he served in Australia, before returning to England, and then to the United States the following year. He eventually pastored churches Colorado, California, Kentucky, and South Carolina. In 1934, Pink returned to England, and turned his Christian service to writing books and pamphlets. After his death, his works were republished by the Banner of Truth Trust and reached a much wider audience as a result. His writing sparked a revival of expository preaching and focused readers’ hearts on biblical living.

Heresy
1 out of 5 stars
Heresy
I did purchase the book knowing of the doctrines and teaching of Arthur Walkington (A.W.) Pink, purchased to "know your enemy" so to speak. Yet I was taken aback by the depth of heresy and the willingness to redefine Bible word meanings, to take passages entirely out of their context and present them absolutely contrary to the actual Biblical meaning, and the oft and blatant ignoring of so many passages that stand against this belief system - so many ignored or meanings altered as to constitute the majority of Scripture used. For example, Mr. Pink starts out on solid theological ground, then moves from that into man's philosophy, which is but man's opinion. He uses his own reasoning rather than reasoning with God. Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: . . ." Mr. Pink relies chiefly on his own understanding, contrary to Scripture. Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 16:25 "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." As far as Mr. Pink's move from theology into his own philosophy . . . Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." For a more detail revelation of Mr. Pink's move from the theology into his personal philosophy, consider his words in his book Reprobation: "Now all will acknowledge that from the foundation of the world God certainly fore-knew and fore-saw who would and who would not receive Christ as their Saviour, therefore in giving being and birth to those He knew would reject Christ, He necessarily created them unto damnation." Mr. Pink begins this sentence with an absolute absurdity "all will acknowledge", which is patently and axiomatically false, all will not acknowledge. Then "from the foundation of the world God certainly fore-knew and fore-saw who would and who would not receive Christ as their Saviour" This is true, he touches on actually Biblical theology, only for a mere moment though. Then he moves out of Bible into his own reasoning, his philosophy - "therefore in giving being and birth to those He knew would reject Christ, He necessarily created them unto damnation." Beware of the "therefore" for it is when his journey into his own reasoning and understanding. This is a damnable heresy. Foreknowledge does NOT equal Forewill. Foreknowledge does not mean Causation. I went to bed last night knowing of a certainty, where I were alive or dead, that the sun would rise on the morrow, and it did. This is Foreknowledge, but I did NOT cause the sun to rise. The Foreknowledge of God in no way prevents the free will of man, indeed - 1 Timothy 2:4 "Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. " This is the will of God, ALL MEN, and this is the true teaching of the entirety of Scripture. There are many other heretical teachings of this heresy, I believe that is the most insidious and pernicious of all heresy, that being the damnable heresy of Calvinism. We must seek the "whole counsel of God" in all things Acts 20:27. Yours in the truth of God's Holy Word.

    Quotes from this entry include:

"...because God is God He does as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases; that His great concern is the accomplishment of His own pleasure and the promotion of His own glory; that He is the Supreme Being, and therefore Sovereign of the universe."

"In a word, to deny the Sovereignty of God is to enter upon a path which, if followed to its logical terminus, is to arrive at blank atheism. The Sovereignty of the God of Scripture is absolute, irresistible, infinite."

"And all we can say is 'Our God is in the heavens, He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased' (Psalm 115:3)."

"...God does rule, actually rule, and that His government extends to and is exercised over all things and all creatures....Two alternatives confront us, and between them we are obliged to choose: either God governs, or He is governed; either God rules, or He is ruled; either God has His way, or men have theirs....We read the Scriptures in vain if we fail to discover that the actions of men, evil men as well as good, are governed by the Lord God....It is clear from Scripture, then, that the angels, good and evil, are under God's control, and willingly or unwillingly carry out God's purpose."

"It is God Himself who maketh the difference between the elect and the non-elect, for of His own it is written, 'And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true' (1 John 5:20). Faith is God's gift, and 'all men have not faith' (2 Thessalonians 3:2); therefore, we see that God does not bestow this gift upon all....the ultimate destiny of every individual is decided by the will of God, and blessed it is that such be the case; if it were left to our wills, the ultimate destination of us all would be the Lake of Fire."

"'The sum of the Apostle's answer here is, that the grand object of God, both in the election and the reprobation of men, is that which is paramount to all things else in the creation of men, namely, His own glory' (Robert Haldane)....Our business is not to reason about it, but to bow to Holy Scripture. Our first duty is not to understand, but to believe what God has said."

"What then was the great purpose for which this world and the human race were created? The answer of Scripture is, 'The LORD hath made all things for Himself' (Proverbs 16:4). And again, 'Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created' (Revelation 4:11). The great end of creation was the manifestation of God's glory."

"Nowhere does Scripture speak of the freedom or moral ability of the sinner, on the contrary, it insists on his moral and spiritual inability. ...Man is responsible to (first) acknowledge before God his inability, and (second) to cry unto Him for enabling grace....If he will do so, sincerely from the heart, then most surely God will respond to his appeal, for it is written, 'For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved' (Romans 10:13)."

Wonderful book for John Calvin followers because it reinforces the absolute truth that God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. The highly controversial question in Christianity is the polarised view of whether God is in control of all things, laws of nature, disasters, happiness, human sufferings, that one is born ugly or beautiful, intelligent or with down syndrome? Or has God ceased control after creating the world in 6 days, after which God stood idly on the sideline while the snake tempted Eve bringing the pivotal downfall of man. Did God unleash the universe to its own random volition and allowed evil and good run amok unsupervised? Does man have free will or that they think they have free will but not because God is always behind his free will pulling the puppet strings thus controlling the choices that Man can make? Does God choose only some to be his sheep while damning others to hell even before they were born? Should man judge God by man's values and sense of fairness? Is it acceptable that God does anything to pleasure himself?

This book discusses these important issues for those wrestling with the vagaries of life. Things are not random. Our fates have long been sealed even before we arrived on earth.

Our desire for God and our common sense are gifts from God. We can go through life with peace in our heart by knowing that the good and bad come from God. Our duty is be generous, loving and forgiving always.

In 1930, A.W. Pink wrote The Sovereignty of God, an earthshaking book that awakened readers to the absolute and kingly control of God over all things. I read the book for the first time in 1991 and have read it several times since.

Pink defines sovereignty in the first chapter: "To say that God is sovereign is to declare that God is God. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Most High, doing according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth, so that none can stay His hand or say unto Him what doest Thou? (Dan. 4:35)." Pink argues, "In a word, to deny the sovereignty of God is to enter upon a path which, if followed to its logical terminus, is to arrive at blank atheism." He continues, "Sovereignty characterizes the whole Being of God. He is sovereign in all His attributes. He is sovereign in the exercise of His power. His power is exercised as He wills, when He wills, where He wills." Indeed, there is no limit to the sovereignty of God.

Pink surveys God's sovereignty by emphasizing His sovereignty in several areas including creation, administration, salvation, reprobation, human responsibility, and prayer to name a few.

The Sovereignty of God should be required reading for every Bible College student and every Seminary student. Pastors should return again and again to this treasure. And Christians of all stripes should be encouraged by this marvelous book.

Every believer should make time to read Pink's classic work on the Sovereignty of God. Pink aims and succeeds in exhalting God above the heavens and proves from the inspired Word that God is not some helpless bystander watching world events randomly taking place before our eyes. No!, He is orchestrating these events for His own purposes.
The blessed assurance that a believer can receive from an understanding of God's Sovereignty is well, beyond calculation.
This work elevates God and puts man where he belongs-in the dust. This doctrine, sadly many shy away from, but it is there in the pages of Scripture to those whom God has opened their eyes to see.
The one thing I must disagree with Pink on is on page 175 (Kindle) or 470 in "The Wisdom of Arthur W Pink vol 1" where he says "...that all our works (before conversion), good as well as evil, count for nothing toward salvation." It MUST be a typo error, as surely "all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." Isaiah 64.6 even before and after conversion?
I understand that Pink was raised in Dispensationalism, subsequently came to reject it and wrote against it, yet had some strange views about prophecy regarding the Lord's Second Advent in his "Reedemer's Return" (Not recommended reading!) This I do not say lightly, and with the utmost regret, because I value highly all his other works, but then, even the Puritans, whom he studied voraciously had a dim light compared to us today), this no doubt came about from his earlier Dispensational leanings.
Having said this, he was a most voluminous writer, and well, no man is perfect,(the Saviour aside!) but certainly his soteriology is biblical.
