Let me start by saying that you will simply not find a better higher-gain WiFi antenna at this price. This antenna has so much gain that it is mind-boggling. Like all Yagis, it is highly directional and will 'listen' where you point it. Where I live, my old laptop can pick up 1-3 networks, while my new laptop can pick up 5-6. With this antenna, I can get close to 30 (all at once). If I rotate the antenna around, I will get 30 more in a different direction. Your reception will be roughly line-of-sight. I happen to live where I am surrounded by trees, so it is difficult to 'see out' to neighboring buildings. But, signals bounce off of buildings and objects, so even if you can't see your target, you might find the signal in some random 'hot-spot' reflection point. Of course, this takes a lot of trial & error. And although I have the antenna mounted on my roof, I could still get over 20 networks through the wall while the antenna was hooked up inside.

The antenna itself has a bit of a home-brew feel to it. As one previous reviewer put it, one could probably make one themselves; however, you will never be able to build and tune a system like this for the price that they are asking. It looks somewhat weatherproof, but the USB connection is exposed, so I would not leave it out in the rain. The tripod that comes with it is a little too small; however, I think some of the reviewers are failing to realize that the legs of the tripod extend out an additional segment. This makes it work much better! I am happy that a standard camera tripod mount was used - this lets the user mount it to any standard tripod or camera mount.

The software/driver for this antenna (from Ralink) is not the strongest. The problems will differ depending on your operating system.

The antenna and USB adaptor are very solid. I actually get better range with this little guy than a 1 meter 26dbi parabolic dish antenna hooked to an Alfa 2000mw USB adaptor. I think this is because this antenna is perfectly tuned and matched to work with it's integrated wifi adaptor. It seems to be a very good design, and despite being lightweight it feels very well constructed. I'm not afraid to store it in my laptop bag.

Yes it does indeed work well in Linux, with full packet injection support. I didn't have to patch drivers or anything, it was just plug and go on Debian 5.0.

My only complaint is the tripod. It seems to be a cheap miniature tripod of the type you might see packaged with a low-end digital camera. It's not quite big enough for the antenna, and the antenna will tip unless placed with great care. The screw that stabilises things to allow proper aiming also stripped on me within hours. It's not all bad though - the tripod uses the standard mounting screw for camera tripods, I intend on picking up a slightly larger and higher quality one.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this device as a long-range wireless solution and would recommend it to any geek or penetration tester that needs extreme range at a good price in a small package.

We've been sitting in the marina at San Diego complaining about our free wifi connection with Harbor Island West Marina. After looking at the hundreds of options for amplifying a wifi signal at the computer we decided to try this. We'll be cruising for a few years and this one looked like the most range and power for the buck. We received it in record time, slapped in the CD to load the drivers and plugged in the antenna. We went literally from hours or repeated disconnects to seconds for web pages. Wow, just awesome, a product that popped in and worked! 2 thumbs up!

This products description appears misleading because a 7 element Yagi antenna, such as this has, might do close to 13 dBi of gain max but they also appear to push that number even higher than it would otherwise be by factoring in the gain of the receive amplifier in the electronics box too to come up with the 18 dBi of gain figure, I assume (I don't know where else they are getting the additional dB's of gain from to make 18 dBi because you can't get that much gain from a Yagi with only 7 elements, as this unit uses). Something else to be aware of is that this advertisement uses dBi as the reference to its gain, dBi is relative to a perfectly omni-directional antenna, or a isotropic antenna, thus the "i" after dB. What it is telling you is how much power the antenna can concentrate in both receive or transmit compared to such an antenna but this unit isn't really so black and white, because I believe they are telling us the gain of the antenna plus a small internal preamplifier after it for receive alone, not transmit. Also, they chose to use dBi instead of dBd, or relative to a dipole antenna which would make the figure 3 dB less if they did so, choosing to express the gain number relative to a isotropic antenna simply because it makes it sound better at the higher gain number when it really isn't.

None of this should really surprise me, as most Wi-Fi products being sold on the internet, both sellers and manufacturers rely upon the technological blind spots of buyers who don't really know antennas, another example of artfully put and often misleading techno-speak can be found in this advertisement in the way they rate its power output at 2200mw, why don't they just use plain language and say 2.2 watts?
