I have come to love my Razer Naga Elite only because I found another option to the Synapse driver.
The Good:
I bought the Naga Elite to play Guild Wars 2. I am big into PvP and after playing all three betas I realized that there is so much on the move combat in the game that I needed an alternative to onscreen clicking. As a side note, I also play Lord of the Rings Online and I found that the mouse is a great asset in that game as well.
The Naga Elite arrived in good condition and on time. Kudos to Amazon. They have yet let me down. The packaging was like opening an Egyptian tomb. It was well crafted and complex. It was almost an adventure in itself trying to find all of the hidden compartments. So that was cool. After I found my way to the deepest recesses of the box I read the quick guide and plugged the mouse in...
First, I want to comment on the 12 side buttons. They are awesome! Which is essential because they are primary feature which enticed me to purchase this particular mouse. They are big, well laid out, and functional. For reference I have medium sized hands and I have no trouble using all 12. The front 9 are more on the fly. The back 3 are harder to reach, but I still use them in combat. To be honest I'm normally not that skillful at such things. In fact I would rate myself as clumsy. Be patient! When I first started using the mouse I had a lot of trouble getting the feel for them. In fact after the first 3 hours of play I considered sending it back. I was sick to my stomach that I had spent so much on a product I couldn't use. But, I played on and after few more hours of game play the buttons began to become second nature. There was this one particular moment after an overwhelming victory that I said to myself, "Whew! I didn't spend a lot of money on a mouse I can't use." Then my second reaction was, "Sweet Mamma!" I realized that I was zooming around clicking off skills like I knew what I was doing. I was getting kills, gaining respect, and feeling like I was a much better player than I actually am. So Kudos to the Naga Elite for that. After all that's the point of expensive gear isn't it?
I would also like to comment on the features that I like about the product above and beyond the 12 side buttons. First I like that the mouse can be used wired or wireless. I need a wireless mouse for some projects. Other times I need the mouse to run for 18 hours at a time without worrying about a recharge (i.e. raiding). Also, I like the three different size attachments. They all have their different feel. I found that they are not all about hand size. They are more about personal preference. I still haven't decided on which one I'm going to use long term. I keep changing my mind, but having the different options is nice. The two buttons above the mouse wheel, as other reviewers have mentioned, are not functional for quick skills, but they do in pinch for things like bringing up your inventory or a world map, which I like. Also, the mouse wheel itself is solid and functional. It is no doubt a high quality piece of hardware.
Here's the bad:
The Synapse driver for the mouse sucks! After installing Synapse and using it for a day or so I was ready to return the mouse. I became desperate and began looking for a solution. If you've read the other reviews of the Naga Elite I'm sure you have read about Synapse. If not read on and you will. You will see that Razer has all kinds of excuses and self serving reasons for Synapse, but, personally I disagree with them all. I hated it! I'm not going to go into detail, it's all been covered before. Let's just say that after using the product I agree with ALL the other negative reviews about Synapse.
But do not fear. For the moment there is a solution. After much searching online I found a link to the old Naga driver. It's actually on the Razer website, but they won't tell you about it. I uninstalled Synapse and I installed the Naga Elite Driver v3.03. From that point on my disgust of Razer products was alleviated for the time. I decided not to return the mouse and have been happy with it so far.
Amazon won't let me put the link in my review. But if you Google Razer Naga Elite Driver v3.03 a link should come up. Choose the one on the Razer website. Remember that you will need to totally uninstall Synapse and then Install the Driver v3.03. Otherwise Synapse will still mess with the mouse.
So, in conclusion:
As long as the v3.03 driver or better is available on the Razer website I think that this product rocks. If the v3.03 driver was not available I WOULD NOT BUY THIS MOUSE! Synapse turns an otherwise great mouse in to crap. That is why I'm giving the Razer Naga Elite 4 stars.
