this is the only coconut coir product that i am happy with after trying several. i am using it in my home container garden setup and it works great. i put the block into my giant tub and fill it up with water. it sets overnight and after that amount of time it is all ready to use the next morning. it was all soft and broken up and ready to use after setting all night. i tried to hurry it up one day and it did not work that way. i had to wait and be patient for it to break up. but this one is really my favorite. i have bought several of this brand name block so far and the price is right also. thank you!

update: you can fill your tub up at least half way with water. put the block of coir into the water slowly so it does not splash out water. slowly turn the block over and over a few times and let it get wet with the water. in a very short time the blocks will be ready to pull them apart and to speed up the process of getting them soaked. you will be able to see the dividing lines in the blocks. you might be able to gently pull the blocks apart now or slide a dull butter knife in between the layers. it should come apart easily. now turn the blocks around in the water and get them wet on the outside. within a couple hours you should be able to "help it out" by pulling off soft pieces and pushing it into the water. i use this method a lot to speed up the process. you have to work with it to help speed it up but thats how i do it when i am in a hurry. i am having good luck with this product and i have bought quite a lot of it lately. after you get the hang of it there will be no problem. there is no bad smell and it seems to be a nice clean product to work with.

update: i have come across two blocks that were hard as a rock and would not soak up water or loosen up. i had to really work on these two blocks to get them broken apart. and they barely filled a five gallon bucket full of material. but so far these are the only two rejects that to me were worthless in my container gardening projects.

The name says it all

I encountered this product last year at a major garden center and found it has many uses. This year I could not find it anywhere - until I found it here on Amazon. It is fantastic as a seed starter medium especially in an open flat when the goal is lifting plants at first or second true leaves. The plants will lift cleanly, roots seldom tear as this medium makes no mat until roots fill the soil area entirely. It also worked in cells when the goal is to allow roots to fill the cell and lift cleanly. It regulates moisture, I have had no problem with damping off, and needs fewer waterings than some potting soils I have used. For cells I found mixing with good potting soil works best. It is simply a great product! It was delivered to my door, and with prime I paid no shipping. It beat peat moss in every category I can think of, and is renewable!

Decent product - hard to work with

As far as being a filler to add some moisture retention to your soil base this seems like a fine product. It does NOT magically turn from a solid brick into something easily mixable into your soil. My experience has been that I have to break the big block into the four smaller bricks. Those have to be soaked for at least 24 hours until they can be broken into smaller pieces when also need at least another 24-48 hours until it has the consistency of anything but hard blocks pressboard. After 2-3 days of soaking and working the bricks into smaller piece, this finally gets to a state where it can be used effectively in your garden. Seems to do what it is advertised to do at the point but it takes considerable effort to get it to that point.

Product would not absorb water and therefore did not expand. Used hot water as instructed as well as broke the flakes in smaller pieces without success. It just sat in in the water. Contacted the manufacturer. They replied with the suggestions I had already tried. Was then instructed to check to see if my ordered block was made in Vietnam, which it was. Asked to send purchase receipt and they would refund. I did this and requested a refund or even a replacement. Planters Pride did not respond. I'm sure I did as instructed because I received another 11# block from another manufacturer and it worked perfectly. Beware if it is from Vietnam.

Difficult to break down

Previously I have bought the Kempf brand of coir which was very easy to hydrate because I just added water and it pretty much just broke down by itself, only needed a minimum of manual agitation. This Beats Peat has been a very different experience. After sitting in 5 gallons of water for two days the block was soaked through but still very much intact. I used a hatchet to split the layers apart and thought that those would break down on their own but that hasn't happened. I'm thinking that I'll have to use a cheese grater or something to get it to the point I can use it. Not a good experience.

Not sure what is in this, but its nothing like the coco coir i've bought from other places. It doesn't expand the way other coco coir does. It was VERY slow in soaking up water and you really had to work with it to break it up. This is in complete contrast to others I have used. I mainly use this for worm bedding. Believe it or not, I have noticed a big difference in the way the worms reacted to it as well. The worms don't break this down well, which alarms me. If the worms won't eat it, then there's something in there that's not natural. I'm going to try another brand.

does not expand. It's ok, but I needed a saw to break it up and put it in water. I kept it outside for a few days because it did not absorb water as fast as other coir products. The price is fine, and after a few days of working with it, it is ok. I tried another brand that was easier to work with. Look for the 3 pack coir that I have reviewed, I think that product was better for me.
