- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2012This is a great program, strongly recommend it if you want to play some fun games of chess. Many of the reviews must be for an older version, as I have just purchased this about a month ago and have played about 50 games varying from blitz chess to action chess (30 minutes per side) and all the negatives are not apparent in this new version. I'm a fairly good player, about 1850 USCF. The systems moves very quickly, a little longer the higher up you go in levels. Levels 1-6 are pretty easy (but I would say a beginner that has no idea on strategy or basic chess openings would even have a problem defeating level 1...Level 1 rating is probably about USCF 1000. I had difficulty beating levels 7, 8, and 9 and those 3 levels give me a good game. I have not yet beat level 10. The book openings on this version are quite extensive...i play some unusual varaitions of the Caro-Kann Defense, gxN variation, and it has at least a dozen different lines and that is pretty rare. Sure it is no Fritz but this price is cheap and is a great value. I would say level 10 would probably give a candidate master a good game. I would highly recommend this.
Pros:
1. If you leave a game in the middle and put your Kindle to sleep, it remembers and gives you the option to resume the game the next time you open it, which is a nice feature. someo eles said this but i will agree.
2. Has all the features you would want..good book openings, good tactical middle game, ok end game. Take back moves, save moves, replay games, all the basics.
3. Easy to learn, clean interface, fun to play.
Cons:
1. for someone that is just learning the game of chess, might be too hard for that beginner even on level 1. But if you know how to play the game and have some basic open and middle game stratgy under your belt, you will like this game from USCF 1000 (beginner) to USCF 2001 (Candidate master).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2011My review is going to be similar to what I said about the Backgammon game (and I was somewhat disappointed with that and went and bought this anyway :-( )
It's a playable chess game for the Kindle. It's easy to move pieces, you just select the piece and then the square you want to put it on. And the "kindle" opponent makes somewhat decent moves without a long computational delay. And unlike the backgammon game it does allow you to play another "human", handy for when you don't have a set with you.
And that is about all it has going for it.
I had the level as high as possible and it seemed to like to move it's queen around without developing other pieces. Yes, it DID win, but I'm a moron at chess. I doubt anybody with any tournament experience would have much trouble with this.
As another reviewer mentioned, it does not vary it's opening play AT ALL (unless you change the level). If you're going to write the AI like this, then there should at least be an option to make the first few moves for both sides then let the kindle take over.
I say the same thing I said about the backgammon: while it's nice to have something for the Kindle that is it's only real value. If you're looking for an opponent anywhere near the challenge your handheld chess game or computer software gives you, you're out of luck.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2011This chess app reminds me of the one for apple 2e computers. Its not terribly good at chess, does not understand draw (lack of material), does not understand promotion, and apparently uses a short fixed time slice to compute its moves (meaning: the more stuff on the board, the easier it is to confuse the computer out of a couple of pieces).
If the computer lasts that long, on a simplified board (pawns and bishops for example), it can do decently.
The computer tries to use the center counter defense as black, which if not played by a master level player, is an immediate loss (its tricky to play this well, its used to cream poor players by bored experts) -- basicaly the computer loses on its third move.
If this software is fixed, so that it lets you promote properly, has a randomized move list so its not up to the human to make variety between games, learns just a few opening moves, and admits to draw by lack of material (easy: need at least 6 points of material or a pawn), it would be pretty good. It looks nice, and its not too hard to move (could use a diagonal button though).
Final verdict: not bad for the price, and its something to do when stuck out and about without an e-book, but for a chess game, its pretty weak. For all you kids, if you want to know what us old folks had, if you imagine this game on an old black and white computer monitor, this is exactly like what we had in 1985.
