Graphics on a Budget - 300W OK!

This card is very good for the price! Not astounding graphics by current standards, but a decent little powerful guy. I went from barely running WoW and other games (Radeon HD 4350 w/shared memory) to playing Guild Wars 2 (low settings, but average 40fps). AND it'll run on 300W!

I'd purchased it specifically because I'd heard it could run on far less power than it "requires" in the specs, and people weren't kidding. My 'puter has a good processor, plenty of RAM, decent motherboard, etc... but the power supply is tiny, and the graphics card it came with was laughable (I didn't know about the power at the time; had planned to upgrade the vid card anyway). It was heck to find an actual upgrade, since I can't personally install a power supply (but can do the simpler stuff like cards and RAM). I also wasn't willing to spend a ton upgrading, since I'll be getting a custom-built awesomeputer in a couple months. This card is win-win!

Decent performance, good price, single slot, low power

It won't let you play the latest hard-core games at maximum render quality, but it is an ideal addition to our 2.5-year-old media PC. Finally, the system can record TV without frustrating freezes/skips of several seconds during the first few minutes of recording! It has also smoothed out Minecraft's graphics nicely. Unlike another reviewer, I've had no trouble playing HD video files with it, even 1080p and with the display resolution - to a TV - at 1920x1080. No power cable needed, so it was easy to install (barring the insane design of the rear panel slot covers on this PC). It works fine with the 300W power supply, even with a second hard drive installed in the tower used for recording - the highest-resource activity on the system, and it gets the onboard CPU fan going hard too. The card fits very nicely into the space of a single PCI slot, which was absolutely vital since the TV tuner is adjacent to it. Someone else pointed out that the low-profile heat sink wraps around the edge of the card, which is true, but since the PCIe 16x slot is at the top in our system, there's nothing at that height on that side of it so it isn't a problem. You should check that on your configuration. You will want to get the latest drivers, but it worked in basic mode first boot simply by moving the TV's HDMI cable to the new card.

In my particular case, I was beefing up a computer--a Dell Optiplex small form factor 'hotbox' for my brother. (You can stop laughing now...)

I've toyed with the thought of moving it to a tower case, but in the end, I just couldn't find a solution to the various problems that arose from the fancy.

I wanted it to be more potent, and so I got an extra fan, a cooler processor, and this card in hopes that it would at least help my brother do half of his graphics editing projects, and hopefully some beefing up games on the side--he likes both. My criteria for purchase was: "Had to be low profile, had to be cool. Had to use very little power. Oh, and dimensions."

Man, was I stunned...! It can play Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 at max settings (1280X1024 though) with no hiccups, and some programs that didn't recognize the integrated graphics before, suddenly worked...! Even a beefy demo like Sonic Generations actually ran about 20 fps on the card, which is at least playable, and he's played through all of Mirror's Edge (Medium, I think?), all of which were essentially unplayable on the integrated chipset.

It's been in use fairly frequently for about 2 months now, and it doesn't show signs of suddenly collapsing or anything, (I was being way too careful benchmarking/testing the thing,) and even immediately after a heavy hour-long session of intense display and then powering of the machine, the heatsink itself was certainly hot to the touch, but I could still lay my hand upon it comfortably (about a 20 second delay from when I unplugged the computer) and the Catalyst software monitors never go significantly above 60 degrees C. More impressively, I read that this thing pulls 20W of power under its heaviest load, which is baffling how it manages to do what it does anyway with so little!

I'll echo what's been said before--you're better off to save up if you want a gaming card, but if it's just video editing/processing, and games typically older than, say, 2009 or so (not caring for max settings, just nice ones), you probably can't beat this price... If somebody's in a bizarre situation like mine, then let me assure him/her: people aren't kidding when they say that 'anything' discrete is better than integrated graphics. I just honestly didn't expect the wonderfully enormous difference...!

I guess my negatives would be the box art looks really goofy, (=D) and I have my suspicions the Catalyst software (newest version from the site, yes) is a little... stupid...? (I once somehow had two instances, at the same time... it was odd.) Also, setting up the low profile bracket, I had just BARELY enough tape to make the VGA port reach to the new bracket--which was on the card's underside in the incredibly stupid layout of this incredibly stupid case. Not really knocks against the product though.

Just have proper expectations about this thing though, if for some reason it's beginning to look nice, and be aware of a few of the 'loose heatsink' horror stories below in the lower star reviews...

Good Card for the Money, Not for High End Gaming

I bought this card as part of my upgrade process which included taking an older Dell Optiplex 745 and turning it into a home theater PC. The onboard video was adequate for Standard Def, but fell short when it came to 720p or 1080p HD content. I added an 80GB OCZ Vertex 2 Solid State Drive to hold our 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS and other applications like XBMC, VLC Media Player, etc. The PC's secondary (storage drive) is a Western Digital 2TB Green drive which we chose for it's lower power consumption and massive storage space. This card handles 1080p content flawlessly and is now hooked up via HDMI to our 40" LCD HDTV. The drivers that came with it aren't completely useless, but they are definitely outdated. I suggest downloading the latest drivers from the AMD website. The latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center also include AMD OverDrive, which let you overclock the cards core speed and memory speed, allowing a little bump in performance. Not for serious gaming, but will handle games that we like (such as the Sims 3) very respectably, even at 1920 x 1080, which says a lot considering I paid $34 for this card and it had a $15 mail in rebate. I recommend this card to anyone looking to boost the performance compared to the on-board video and highly recommend it for home theater PC's.
