Beginners installation guide from a non IT guy
First off let me save you many hours and weeks I spent with this product. We were having a home built so I asked the builder to run cat5. It has four access points. They ran the cable but didn't crimp the cords which is very easy to do if you buy a $15 crimpers, $10 on RJ25 end pieces. After crimping everything I hooked up the access points. NO POWER. You MUST buy a POE switch with these piece. I at first tried to go to my local store but most POE are only 15w and you need at least 25w with the unifi. Just order the ones pictured at the bottom of this page. I bought the Texas brand. Once those arrived I thought it would work. Nope. You also NEED A switch. After three weeks I'm up and running and it is fairly painless if you buy a router (I have a net gear nighthawk), POE switch of at least 25w, and a basic switch( mine was $9.99 at Best Buy, do not need a gigs switch). Once you create you account and have everything hooked up correctly it easily recongnizes the devices. You then must name the new network and log in. Unifi seems to work well at seamless switching as you get closer to another device. It will not switch until you do something that uses data. Another thing. When mounting these things it was a nightmare trying to use the drywall screws. I ended up just screwing them in the drywall. No issues, stays flush with the ceiling. They only weigh 1 pound or less and I find it unlikely it would collapse! Overall happy with the product and spent approximately $500 to wire my whole house and buy equipment.

I'm an IT guy by profession and have deployed a few of their 802.11ac access points in my offices over the last 8 months. So far, they've been rock-solid. I was so impressed that when my home wireless router started having hardware issues (although wireless continued to work, the switch would stop working after a few days and wired devices would be dead until I rebooted it), I decided to get a solid wired router and grab this entry-level WAP from Ubiquiti to provide my Wi-Fi.

If you're a casual home user who doesn't think tinkering is its own reward, you might not want to invest the time in learning how this operates differently than you're accustomed to. You MUST install the UniFi controller software on a Windows, Mac, or Linux machine to configure and manage this access point. Once that's accomplished, you DO administer it via a web browser, but since it's not a router, you'll find the interface to be unlike most home routers you may have splashed around in. Simpler in some ways since you don't configure routing or firewalling functions, but still different. That said, if you follow the quick-start guide, it's surprisingly easy to get this up and running. They ask you for no more than is absolutely necessary to get a new wireless network up and running. You may find yourself asking, "That's all? I'm done?"

If all you want is a single wireless network for your own use, then yep. That's it! If you want to create guest networks, have a portal page where people agree to your terms first ("You must bring me cookies and massage my feet if you use my WiFi."), or set bandwidth limits on wireless networks, that's not difficult, but you have to figure out how the different settings come together to make that happen.

Consider that for support, you're largely on your own. You can't call anyone for hand-holding, so if you're getting frustrated with a problem, it's self-help all the way. The Ubiquiti community is quite active and a useful resource, but think Microsoft support: you have to figure it out on your own or find someone to ask who knows the answer.

You might be wondering if you need to leave the controller software running all the time. Nope, probably not. If you want that terms of service portal that tells your guests that you want cookies and cakes (or pies and pastries - your call) in exchange for your gracious gift of abundant Internet, yes. If you're just running a single wireless network or a guest network with no portal page, the controller doesn't have to be running.

The range is very good. My radio is set to Auto, and coverage is solid and throughput is reliable, even when the signal is reporting at 50%. I could wish for 802.11ac, but not at 4x the price. Given the price point, reliability, and features of this "entry-level" WAP, I'm more than happy with "n" speeds.

I only had one issue with the controller software. I initially connected and configured it through the failing switch I intended to retire. It worked fine, but once I replaced that router/switch with my new one, my controller software no longer saw the access point. Did the DHCP server on my new router assign it a different IP address than it had before? Almost certainly, but I didn't expect the controller to be that fragile with an IP change. In researching the problem, the UniFi seems to be happier in an environment where you can create a DNS record telling it where to find the controller. I tried a number of things to get them talking again, with partial success, but could just never get it back under management with the existing installation of the controller. Long story short, I ended up simply removing the controller software and configuration and re-installing it clean. I had already reset the AP as one of my troubleshooting steps to bring it back under management, so that meant I had to once again set it up as if I'd just unboxed it. The newly-re-installed controller immediately found and allowed me to adopt the unconfigured access point, and it probably took me all of 5 minutes to recreate my entire configuration from scratch. I'm still using a dynamically assigned IP, and I may eventually decide to assign a static IP, but for now, it ain't broke, so I'll let it run and see how we do. Again, if you don't consider yourself a geek, this may not be for you. If you have any experience with networking or like to putter with cool tech, you'll probably find this a pleasure to use.

My goal was to have a Wi-Fi network that never goes down and doesn't need rebooting every few days or weeks to remain usable. I've had this going for two weeks now since finishing the project, and so far, smooth sailing. If it performs as well as its faster AC cousin has at the office, I expect to remain a happy, well-connected camper.

I've become increasingly annoyed with the wireless routers and access points from Linksys, Cisco and Netgear. I've used Linksys/Cisco, Netgear and Dlink in the past, Everything seems to work reasonably well in the beginning but then seems to fail after about a year. My most recent Linksys WAP200 AP and WRT54G2 needed constant rebooting just so I could connect via WiFi. It should be noted that I live in a 3,400 square foot house and the upstairs outlying bedrooms never had a very good signal.

Enter the Ubiquiti UniFi. I had never heard of it and therefore almost immediately wrote it off. I read every review and ordered one instantly. I installed it in the center of the first floor of our house in an area where it wouldn't be terribly visible, although it looks very attractive. The POE injector was nice so I didn't have to worry about having a nearby power outlet. I snaked a network cable from the basement into the bathroom wall a few days ago. The UniFi showed up today and I had it mounted and running in no time.

As far as setup goes, it was really no more difficult than setting up WPA2 on any other WiFi device. The CD worked perfectly for me on my Windows 7 64 bit computer, no need to download any beta software. The only trick was that port 8080 was being used by the Bonjour service on my computer. I modified the settings file for the UniFi (a simple thing to do) and changed it to port 8180 and everything worked perfectly without conflicts. That technique figured to be much easier than trying to figure out how to change the port settings of any possible software that was already using port 8080. All of our laptops, Kindles, Nooks, iPads and iPhones were synced in no time. It was flawless. It should be noted that I am not an IT professional, but I don't really understand how anyone could complain about the setup. It's really quite simple.

The signal is significantly better than anything I've ever owned. The upstairs was never good even with the WRT54G2 and a WAP200 configured as a repeater upstairs. I was even able to stream the Watch ESPN app from the master bedroom without any hiccups earlier this evening. A few nights ago, my iPhone couldn't even get a WiFi signal so it defaulted to the usual sluggish 3G connection. I also like that the UniFi will update itself as needed.

It's really hard to get excited about WiFi network equipment, but I'm thrilled to have something that works like it should. No other piece of wireless networking equipment I've ever owned has been this strong and easy to set up. Definitely worth the $70 price tag.

    Update on 05-11-2013:
Just ran a download speed test in the bedroom with the history of bad wifi and got a 21 Mbps download speed with a 5 Mbps upload with Comcast. Streaming video is fantastic and I have t had to do a single thing to the access point since it was installed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Estremamente affidabile, grande copertura, elevato throughtput anche con segnale limitato
Reviewed in Italy on October 29, 2016

Absolutely fantastic device. I bought one of these to test with and deploy in a two "building" wifi setup and the first one work great and was super easy to set up. You merely install the controller software on your PC, and then access the local web interface to modify any of the settings. Once it's setup, you're done. You can disconnect the controller if you wish (you just need to reconnect it to make changes in the future) or leave it running to monitor the wifi usage.

The coverage is fantastic, and the best part is, I can add and remove APs as I want, both in and outdoor. It runs POE (although at 24V only... so don't plug this into a 48V switch) so there is only one ethernet cord to run (a power inserter is included). I just bought a second for the other "building" as this is absolutely great. 5 stars is an understatement.
