The 1/2-inch hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 535 unit watts out for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill’s patented three-speed (0-600 RPM; 0-1,250 RPM; and 0-2,000 RPM), all-metal transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drills on the market.
Meanwhile, the impact driver’s robust motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Its one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 3.4-pound weight, the premium impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.
The circular saw’s powerful motor (offering 460 max watts out) and ergonomic profile (with lightweight magnesium shoe and optimized handle design) are ideal for professionals tasked with framing, cross cutting, ripping, bevel cutting and plunge cutting. Delivering 3,700 RPM, this saw is 10 percent more powerful than previous DEWALT 6.5-inch cordless circular saws—and combined with its accompanying 3.0 Ah lithium-ion battery, it provides up to 57 percent more runtime compared with other leading 18-volt lithium-ion tools. Its bevel capacity of 0-50 degrees lends itself well to a variety of applications, and a 6.5-inch thin kerf carbide tooth blade provides users with the ability to cut completely through two-by framing lumber at a 45-degree bevel angle.
The reciprocating saw is compact and lightweight for access to tight areas (and it helps to reduce user fatigue). The keyless lever-action blade clamp makes for quick and easy blade changes, and the blade reverses for upside-down and flush cutting. Its 1-inch stroke length delivers 0-3,000 SPM for fast cutting. A variable-speed trigger with lock provides increased control, and an electric brake prevents blades from breaking with exiting plunge cuts.
LED Work Light
The work light comes equipped with additional lumens (110 total) for brighter visibility, delivering bright white LED light that reduces shadows and helps differentiate between colors. (An added bonus: The LED bulb creates less heat than conventional Xenon bulbs.) Its pivoting head rotates 120 degrees with 11 detent positions for a wide range of visibility, and the integrated hanging hook allows for hands-free capability. Users can expect up to 11 hours of light output when paired with the 3.0 Ah 20-volt max lithium-ion battery.
Endurance and Ease of Use
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into all of these tools’ switches to provide maximum life by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The max 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt max lithium-ion battery technology, and the included Energy Star-qualified charger has dual voltage capabilities and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. The tools’ slim handles fit easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs, and the bright built-in LED work lights above the triggers have a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

Roughly, three to four times a year, I find myself doing small (and rarely, mid-sized) home improvement jobs. Whether it is installing new lighting fixtures, adding new cabinets, replacing a hardwood floor etc, etc... I have need for decent, but not professional grade tools that are solidly built. For the past ten years or so I have used primarily a mix of corded DeWalt and Milwaukee tools and have usually been pleased, but of course like any other Joe, got tired of constantly fooling with keeping the corded tools powered by using an extension cord. So, with a bit of trepidation, I decided to give this latest cordless 20 volt DeWalt set a shot (and if it worked well, to sell some of my corded stuff). This is my first experience with a decent cordless tool set. During the fall of 2011, I built a treehouse for my son and a roof over part of my backyard deck. The treehouse took about 30 hours over the course of week and a half and the shingled roof and framing/finishing took maybe ~100 hours over the course of four weeks, working in the evenings after teaching. So, these tools got put to their first real test and did just fine. Here is how the cordless kit did:
Circular Saw (DCS393) - Both projects used treated lumber and although I would not call the saw a weak point, compared to the other excellent tools in this kit, it was the weaker link. I was able to saw thru 2x4s and 2x8s with ease and the initial framing went fine. I did run into sometimes slight delays with the two included lithium power packs as one would be finishing charging up as the other had run dry. They do charge up very quickly (my guesstimate is about 40 minutes) but when you saw thru dozens of cuts, you can deplete one power pack in around thirty minutes, so you have a ten minute delta of waiting time before you can get back to work (this is not as evident when using regular untreated lumber). The answer was simple, I just purchased an additional power pack and that allowed me to work uninterrupted. I also replaced the stock blade with a much nicer blade as soon as I got the kit. The saw worked fine, but if I were a contractor cutting boards all day long, a more powerful corded saw would be my call for speed's sake. You can definitely notice a difference in speed between a high amp corded professional saw and this cordless one when making many cuts thru a denser material (like treated lumber). As an example, a 2x8 cut might take seven seconds with this saw if you are in a hurry versus maybe four seconds with a more powerful corded saw. So, I give the saw a 7 or 8 out of ten if you are a contractor and a 10 out of ten if you are a Harry Homeowner. Was just fine for me though, as I dont need to make all my cuts in four seconds, LOL.
Recip Saw (DCS381) - Didnt need this as much as the circular saw, but found this to work just fine. Wish it had the different mountable blade positions as other saws I have used in the past. Did very well though when used with the more dense treated lumber. Worked fine with just the two power packs (with no need for the third one). No overheat and no unwanted vibration to the arm either. Have since used this this to great effect for cutting down tree limbs. Give this a 9 out of ten.
Hammerdrill (DCD985) - The real gem of the kit. Drills, screws or hammerdrills all in one tool. Used it hour after hour, without overheat or unwanted vibration. Beautiful system for setting torque and power. And have since used it for a smaller concrete job and two duct jobs. Worked fine with just the two power packs (with no need for the third one). For a cordless product, you would not know it. It just works and is every bit as powerful as corded tools I have used previously. Easily a 9.5 out of ten for a contractor and a 10 out of 10 for a Harry Homeowner.
Driver (DCF885) - Not used as much as the hammerdrill over the last seven months. Seems to be of the same beautiful quality of the hammerdrill. Very powerful for its size. Unsure, if this value would still hold up if I needed it for long term professional use. Very good vibration modulation for its size. For the Harry Homeowner, 10 out of 10, especially considering its weight.
LED Light (DCL040) - Not quite the same frequency or amplitude (brightness) as my MagLight in the garage, but hey, its a frigging flashlight. Bright enough to get the job done and bright enough to easily see by in a pitch black room. Worked just fine. Never got to the point where it depleted one power pack so dont know how long it can last. 10 out of 10 for me personally.
Overall, after more than four years with the kit and perhaps 1000 to 1500 hours total on it, I would give it a 9.5 out of ten. Glad to get rid of the corded tools I used to own and is a nice addition to my garage. Everything is still going strong and doing just fine. Was waiting for DeWalt to release a 20 Volt Max cordless Jigsaw, and they finally did. I purchased it as well and added it to this set. Very happy with these tools and will continue to add posts every six months or note problems if they occur. So far, five star products for the regular homeowner.
Well now we have the 20v Max line. To be honest, if I didn't need to buy some new 18v packs, I wouldn't have even considered getting these. But I did, and I'm not disappointed. They all have the same solid, beefy Dewalt design, but now they are light and compact as well. They appear to be nearly as small/compact as the 12v max tools. And these tools hold a charge for much longer than their 12v cousins. (Sorry, I haven't done a comparison test on how long they all last, 12 vs 18 vs 20).
The new Impact driver is equal to the 18v version but lighter. Function and size seem nearly the same, but the 20v is slightly smaller and a good bit lighter (the 12v is smaller and lighter then any of them).
The hammer drill is the same as the 18v version, but it is lighter as well. Size and function seem to be exactly the same, just lighter. (no 12v hammer drill)
The circular saw appears to also be the same as the 18v. Performance seems just the same as the 18v version (good enough for quick cuts in contruction lumber, but I wouldn't want to have to use it for all day jobs or on pressure treated lumber).
Charging seems much faster (about 30min or so, but don't hold me to it as I didn't discharge the pack fully).
The light is a new design, with just a rotating head, function is fine, but I really liked the old snake head of the previous 18v version better.
The new reciprocating saw is the only tool I felt was not on par with the 18v version. It is a much lighter and slightly smaller design, but it no longer has the pivoting head and adjustable guard, and the blade lock is stiffer. Performance wise, it still works just as well as the 18v. After thinking about it, I realized that I never actu
