Healing Myths, Healing Magic: Breaking the Spell of Old Illusions; Reclaiming Our Power to Heal Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

Healing Myths, Healing Magic examines the deeply ingrained stories or “myths” we commonly hold about how our bodies heal — myths that can actually inhibit healing. For example: "I must forgive in order to heal," "A person may be too far gone to heal," or "Healing is not always available." The myths we accept without question have a powerful, magically suggestive effect on the way we interpret our symptoms, the way we heal, and the quality of life we experience. Our stories, or myths, can create the magic of healing in our lives, or they can stop the magic completely.

Dr. Epstein contends that unless we question the myths that control our lives, we will continue to make the same healing choices we have been conditioned to make, even if those choices are killing us. In this breakthrough book, Epstein divides the healing myths into four categories: social, biomedical, religious, and new age. He exposes each myth individually, then suggests an alternative, or "Healing Magic," to help us reclaim our body’s natural ability to heal.

Donald Epstein has written a marvelous book that clearly explains what true healing entails. He compares healing with curing. The former works with root causes at the energetic level, while the latter deals more with symptoms which is kind of like a band-aid approach that only addresses superficial issues. Essentially, Dr. Epstein helps us to understand how the healing process can empower us, whereas seeking a cure will not enable us to experience the innate power that we gave away---which is what contributed to the original disturbance. This book is well written, filled with stories to help us understand the energy-oriented constructs, and goes into great depth and detail on the subject. I highly recommend this book, as well as all of Dr. Epstein's books.

I consider myself to be well versed in alternative medicine and alternative thought. This book showed me many of the myths I have lived by at various points in my life, and many that I have still been operating under. It was a terrific eye-opener, and left me feeling even more empowered as a healing human and a healer. I really appreciated the "turnarounds" for each myth, helping me to shift my own perspective into one of self-determination and healing freedom.

The information in this book is so enlightening and needed for all of us. As I read it, I felt more empowered and knowledgeable about healing, wellness and how my standard culture (American) has not been sharing with me this whole picture of how amazing and magnificent my body is. I gained a greater insight about the miracles of healing.

I adore this book and recommend it to everyone who wants to up their game in the healing and vitality arenas. This author also wrote the amazing book The Seeker's Code: Your Access to the Unreasonable and Extraordinary (2023). Buy them both and you'll be on your way to higher levels of resourcefulness. Happy healing everyone!

In this book Epstein talks about the common social, Medical, religious and new age myths as they apply to healing. I related to everything, but especially the new age myths because they were the most recent. I felt bad because they didn't work for me but I see that they don't have to. I also appreciate the surveys and the advice to revisit them periodically, as well as the recap of all of the chapters. Very well written. I can't wait to dig deeper!

Extremely provocative read! Epstein states commonly held "myths" about healing and then explains, for each one, why it isn't true. There are many, many myths presented, and whether or not you agree with his viewpoint, it is useful to question these beliefs that are deeply embedded in the psyche. He also approaches these beliefs from a variety of different paradigms: the myths that come from religious thinking, New Age thinking, societal beliefs, etc., which I found fascinating and extremely educational.

Though familiar with alternative medicine and healing methods, some of the "myths" mentioned had not occurred to me before and prompted an examination of a few hidden beliefs about health and wellness.

Worth a read.

Donny is like a magician in how he so accurately explains healing myths and the magic to replace it. The stories he include in the book are also very insightful.

Western medicine is great for acute conditions (i.e. stop the bleeding now!) but not so good with chronic conditions. Take responsibility for your health.
