Christmas gift for my musically inclined 2 year old. He is obsessed with his poppa's guitar and after poppa started letting him strum the strings, we decided he needed to play! We thought this would be the perfect little "guitar" for him, and it is! He loves it, and so do I! He loves to strum the strings and "play" it and loves to hear momma play it too. One of his favorite Christmas gifts and one of mine too. Don't get me wrong, this is not a toy nor is it of toy quality, in fact it is very nice and well put together with a good sound. I didn't want him to have a cheap toy, I wanted him to have something nice that we can take care of and teach him to play on and have fun with for a long time to come, and I believe this is perfect!

    I just received this, so I will try to update the review after a month or two of playing. First of all, I think this company must have been paying attention to all the complaints about cheap strings, because mine came strung with aquilas.

    This is my first ukulele, so keep in mind I don't know much. First of all, I expected a somewhat crappy sound and appearance from a largely plastic instrument. That was not the case. This little thing sounds great and looks well made and attractive (mine is black). Granted, it was badly out of tune, but once I deciphered the poorly translated instructions on the tuner tightening up the strings to the correct tone was easy. (I got close using a digital piano, then used the handy electronic tuner).

    Research had told me that it would take a week or two for the strings to hold tune, so I wasn't surprised when it came out of tune almost immediately, but it was kind of fun to tune it up, so there you go.

    I have no string instrument experience, so contorting my fairly stiff 50 year old hands to the tiny fretboard is a challenge, but I think with practice I'll be just fine.

    As for the gig bag, the uke actually came with two. The first was very thin, and I doubt that I will ever use it. The other, was actually sturdy and well made. No real padding though, and a pocket would have been nice to hold extra strings and the tuner, but at least it will keep the dust off.

    I haven't used the instructional disc yet, so can't say anything about that. (I'm using ukulele for dummies).

    All in all, I would say that this was an excellent buy, although I can't wait for the strings to settle in. I should add, that in case you are embarrassed for your ups guy to see that you are ordering a uke (as I was), it did come in plain package.

    OK. I've had this uke for almost a month, and I'm still thrilled with this purchase. I've played it so much that I feel like Bryan Adams in the summer of '69. (Saying I played it 'til my fingers bled for you young folks--not really just 'til they were very sore). My fingertip calluses are coming in nicely.

    Now for more specific stuff. This still looks great. The plastic body still looks brand new with a wipedown from a microfiber cloth (included). It holds its tune very, very well. I only have to tune when there is a large temperature or humidity change (not sure which caused it), so that I can just pick it up and play.

    I should also mention that I showed this to one of my guitar snob friends and practically had to fight him to get it back. These things are really fun to play.

    I still haven't used the instructional dvd, so still no opinion on that.

    To sum up: Zero regrets about this purchase. It was worth every penny and more. If you are thinking about buying a uke, don't hesitate to buy this one.

    I got this for Christmas, and I'm in awe. Clearly, there was an old bag that was being sold, as I received a cheap black nylon bag along with a heavily padded very nice gig case. The ukulele is beautiful (I got candy apple red) the paint job is fabulous, especially when you clean it with the polishing cloth. The tuner is very nice, and I'm impressed with the CD. It was very helpful, though it didn't really discuss how to strum, but it did talk about strumming patterns and many more things. That's okay, you can just look up how to strum. I'm a beginner, and I love the ukulele. Most people complain about the "cheap nylon strings," but after tuning them for the first time, they sound great. Of course, they didn't keep a tune long, but I enjoy tuning so it wasn't a hassle. Also, I tuned the strings and then left the ukulele alone for a couple hours, and when I came back the strings only needed minimal tuning. Again, the tuner is extremely great. It even comes with a lithium battery. I probably won't purchase new Aquila strings, to be honest. The strings they come with are nice. I've already started getting little cuts as my pampered flute fingers get used to the strings (yes, that does happen, and as long as you don't overdo it they don't really hurt) and I'm expecting calluses in about 2 weeks.

    +Summary+
    I have to give this whole kit 5 stars because it's all wonderful. I'm impressed with the Kala Brand ukuleles. I doubted making this purchase before, but I seriously am not even beginning to regret it. Buy this, even if you've never seen a uke in your life and are interested in playing one. Pros aren't impressed, but I am. I love it!

    I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when a friend suggested that I buy this Makala Dolphin Ukulele for playing outside or when traveling. I have several other really great solid wood ukes that each cost more than 7 or 8 times the cost of this uke. But I have to say that this little uke can hold it's own. I don't want to say that it is cheap - because for the price you get great quality - so I'll just call it a very inexpensive instrument with great sound. It is bright and loud without sounding like a toy. Of course it has it's limitations - but if you change the strings to Aquila Nylguts you will be very impressed with it. I really cannot recommend this uke enough to anyone - complete beginner or very experienced player - that wants a good knock around instrument that you don't have to worry about! And this bundle package is really great! The case is very nice and the tuner is top notch! You will not be disappointed with it!
