Needs better hardware to stay in tune.
3 out of 5 stars
Needs better hardware to stay in tune.
A first time guitar player won't use it longer than a few minutes. It'll sit in a corner, neglected, because it simply won't stay in tune long enough to keep their interest. In order for this cheap guitar to play well I changed the tuners, nut, and bridge. With different/new hardware it stays in tune. Epiphone says it has a mahogany body, it does but it is mahogany plywood. Even though it is made from plywood this thing has really good sustain. I love that it came with an option for P90s and after my modifications this thing JAMS!

I needed a smaller axe to play while seated . I always wanted a "Paul" . My Trini 335 is too big to sit with . Saw this Special on EBAY . Seller was all hyped on it being Custom Shop. I thought it must mean it is a better , or an upgraded model . So I bought it . When I got it , I let it sit for a bit on the stand , then I tuned it up. Or attempted to tune it . No luck . Tuners would not hold tune long enough for me to play 1 song . Spent at least 20 minutes each day retuning it . And then it was not perfectly intonated . Sounds good ,but pots are cheap -- not the ones Epi says [500ohm/ caps across them ] . Neck is a baseball bat . Not the slim tapered "D" they say , but more like a "W" . Then Epi says it was a 2nd . I was not told this . And I assumed the Custom Shop Seal meant something . Now I know it is meaningless . Don't know why the the seller praised the Custom Shop Seal so much . Caveat Emptor , folks . Fire wood

I hated that it was cracked , but I was too lazy to send it back , it was cheap anyways
Well anyways the tone,,, the tone is amazing, when you strike the string and bend it , it squeals like a sustainiac harmonic , really nice, but the metal inlays were a bit poking out and when I go up and down the neck with would scrape my palm area , and it would feel ugly
And when you toggle the switch sometimes it wouldn’t activate , I still love the guitar , I bought another from guitar center
    P90s are perfect for rock
    Sounds punchy

This is a nice guitar for the price. Only one minor defect I found was a tool mark on the P-90 plastic cover which is cosmetic, and after playing, I don't care. I have had Gibson and Fender guitars since the 1970's. My current main guitar is a 1968 Telecaster that was restored to original condition by a pro luthier. I got this to try out the P-90's for the first time without breaking my wallet. I was shocked at how much quality is in this guitar for the price. All I have done to this guitar is change the strings to .009's. The stock strings were too heavy for me. Other than that, this guitar is fun to play as is. I tune any guitar each time I go to play it and this is no different. I find it holds the tune just fine. No fret buzz or other problems. I am sure it would play better if set up by a luthier, however, I think it is just fine as is for now. Love the P-90's. They really have their own sound. Bottom line, I play blues a lot and enjoy playing this guitar as much as my restored vintage Telecaster and those P90's really sing!

Not a bad guitar at all...AFTER some mods/tweaking. Firstly, a lot of these are not set up very well out of the box. Expect some very minor fretwork(slight leveling and polishing), and the fretboard will need to be oiled. The wood is not real mahogany. It is a multi-piece Luan wood body/neck. Don't be discouraged, though. Luan on this guitar is VERY resonant and sounds pretty darn good. It is a plentiful wood overseas used a lot for flooring and furniture builds. Let your ears judge...not specs. "They" say Luan shares some of Mahogany's tonal traits...not sure about that, but it definately sounds good to me.
Very light, but slightly soft wood..so be careful not to ding it. The finish is great(very smooth matte finish). Tuners were crap. I replaced them with grovers, and the original one's literally fall apart in your hand. The nut needs to be replaced. It will function enough, but, this is a big area of vibration transfer...so, a bone nut will be going there. The wraparound bridge is functional and intonates well...giving that some time before I decide if I want to replace it or not. Plenty of sustain...do not be put off by it being a bolt on neck. The neck joint is a good tight fit. The neck is not too narrow like some of the older Epi's. The radius seems to be about 12" or 14". The neck profile feels to me like it is a slim taper 60's, and very fast due to the satin finish.
The P90's are alnico V driven, and work very well. By personal preference, I am replacing one mag in the bridge with an A8, and replacing one mag in the neck with an A3. I am also potting them again, as I use higher gain sometimes and they get just a tad too microphonic. Volume/Tone pots are 500K full size Alpha brand. The 3-way switch is a typical Epiphone(chinese) copy of a switchcraft design. Pots and switch work just fine. Wire used is adequate but I want to upgrade. The output jack is not good. I would suggest a switchcraft jack. Mine had many bad/weak solder joints...I would suggest re-soldering every point to be sure. You can tell this was done in a hurry.
FYI - I have been playing for 20+ years, gig every weekend, mod guitars, mod amps, mod pedals...etc. I own several different guitars varying in levels of "quality" and name brands. (Fender, Agile, Epiphone, Carvin, Ibanez, Hofner..etc)
This guitar is fun, comfortable, light, and has surprisingly great tones. A perfect guitar to introduce you to the world of the P-90 pickup.

(Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 worn Cherry) Had a long wait for another Epip Les Paul (tribute Plus) that is on backorder and will arrive in June or July --- so -- I noticed this $130 Epip with P90's. This is my first guitar with P90's and so far, it's been fun to play (hum and all) with through my Fender Deville 212 III. Playing clean for Blues or Jazz with the neck (some hum) pick-up and switch to the middle postion and surprise --NO HUM! Sound is great! For Hard Rock, switch to the Bridge pickup and I use a distortion pedal or the Digtech RP 355. Adjusted the action lower, adjusted the intonation, the neck was fine. You can adjust the P90's with the two screws on top and the coil springs on the bottom. Could not get my guitar cord into the jack on the Epip at first, but was able to fix it by taking the jack out and turning it to a 180 dgree angle. This guitar is light as a feather, feels and plays just fine, and for the price, it's a keeper. Don't try defeating the 60hz hum, work around it and have fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Llego con una viscosidad tipo aceite
