Extremely interesting collection of articles that appeared in The Atlantic Magazine before, during and after the Civil War. The Atlantic, published in Boston, was perhaps the leading publication of the abolitionist movement. Since we are exactly 150 years on from that great struggle (1861-1865), it is useful for all Americans to be reminded of what was at stake and the dreadful cost in lives and destruction paid to keep the nation together and remove the stain of slavery from our land. Slavery was brought to the colonies in the early 1600s and was an inherited but settled fact of life by the time the Founding Fathers declared our independence from Britain. They articulated their noble view of life, that "all men are created equal," while acknowledging that as yet that hadn't been worked out as it should. The drafters of the Constitution couldn't end slavery either and left it for others to deal with later. The explosion came in 1861. No president before or since has faced as great a challenge as President Abraham Lincoln did the day he was sworn in on March 4, 1861. Seven states had already seceded, four more were to follow shortly and the Confederacy bombarded Ft. Sumter into surrender six weeks after his inauguration. The Atlantic was there every step of the way as Lincoln saved the Union and redeemed the promise of the Declaration of Independence.

Civil War In The Words Of The 1800's

Anyone interested in stepping into the 1800's during the American Civil War will enjoy this commemorative issue from The Atlantic. The articles are written by Northerners (most were radicals in the cause of abolition). The articles (some fiction) were written by famous authors (for example Hawthorne, Longfellow, Jewett). A few articles were published more recently, for example, Garry Will's account of the Gettysburg Address. Reading what the people at that time were reading, gives a special flavor to history. I learned a lot. Photography was new during the Civil War, bringing, for the first time, pictures of war into the homes of soldiers' families. The photographs in this issue greatly enhance the experience of the articles. Living in the Washington, D.C. area, I enjoyed the pictures of sites I often see in D.C.

Still reading and appreciating the articles that were posted back then in the Atlantic. Brilliant insight into the atmosphere of the time. I wasn't aware the Harriet Beecher Stow was asked by the president to write articles to support his stand against slavery that ended up being a book—Uncle Tom's Cabin.

"The Atlantic" has been a fixture in my mailbox for over 50 years, and on my computer for at least 15 or so, and I've always looked forward to reading it.

This commemorative issue is a wonderful insight into "The Atlantic" as I would have read it back in the day if I had been living in Wisconsin then. Almost all the stories are by abolitionists, almost all were current at the time -- the Wills piece on "The Gettysburg Address" is an welcome exception.

The editors have done a great job of issuing this volume, and it reads very well on the iPhone version of my Kindle. The illustrations all appear, so far as on I have determined, online in the magazine's files, or elsewhere.
