I’m only about halfway through, but this has been what a ‘How To’ should be. We already know what needs to be done- Nigel Watts offers some actual advice, practical advice on HOW it should be done. No sickly-sweet-believe-in-yourself pep talks, no build-it-and-they-will-come just-keep-writing placation, just simply this-is-how-it’s-done it plain stright forward English with examples of what he means and explaination of the why of how it works.

I enjoyed the book and it was a quick review of all the things I've learned from other sources. I didn't find anything astonishing in its newness, or anything like that, but it contained sound advice for all writer wannabes. I like it as a reference, to be honest, a book that I can return to for purposes of refreshing myself on certain points. Since the book's not excessively large or wordy, and there are many headings in bold print, it's ideal for such purposes, as far as I'm concerned. A welcome addition to any writer's "how-to" collection!

I am only about 30 pages into this but I have already learned a lot. I really have NO CLUE about fiction writing, other than what my natural instincts tell me (or fail to tell me, in a case or two.)

This book has, so far, been a really good starting point into fiction writing. It's a good book (at least in the first 30 pages) to hold your existing ideas up to, and see if they seem workable. That's kind of how I'm using it so far.

I plan to purchase more books on specific topics to get more detailed and perhaps get some practice along the way... but this book, for what it is, is a great start.

This makes a great book for a beginner writer, who doesn't know how to start. It is written clearly without any digressions, and uses excerpts from writers to illustrate a point. The exercises are pertinent to the concept (point of view, setting, etc.), and are easy to do, while challenging at the same time. This is a book by someone who both writes and can guide others to find out what they want to write.
