- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2013This is one hot guitar. I am not a guitar expert. I have been playing for over 1 year but play enough to be pretty ok sounding. I love the sound of Son House and have wanted a resonator guitar for some time (ask my girlfriend who surprised me with this and she will tell you how long I have busted her chops). This guy here fills that void. I have no idea how to explain it....it sounds different. It sounds like a cross between an acoustic and a banjo but not as corny as a banjo- a very deep, very clear metal sound (not metal like Poison or Motley Crue metal, but more like the jingle jangle metal of some old guy sitting on a stool singing about hard times in his life with a storm-a-brewin' in the background over a field-you know the good metal sound only a resonator can make). The guitar is well made, strong, has some heft, stays in tune, resonates clear, is way louder than a regular acoustic guitar and at this price is a steal. I went to a local big- name chain music store (won't name any names here) and priced one...........$749......yeah ridiculous!! It has a beautiful South Pacific motif etching on the back but does not take away from the clean looks of this guitar. I am new at this and am learning some slide. If you are looking to get this as your first acoustic guitar I might say look at something more like a traditional acoustic guitar, if you want to be more exciting and get a sound from a time long ago when people sang about depression camps in the 1930's, and hoppin' a train to escape the blues of a heartbreaking woman...this little guy fits the bill quite well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2013Had a great unique sound. Plays very well and is simply beautiful to look at. I'm not a slide player and am using this fingerpicking entirely (with thumb and fingertip picks) and it sounds great. I picked this up for under $300 and I feel like I got an incredible deal.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2013you won't be sorry, unless you don't get one of these for yourself. Fedex delivered mine and we opened the box immediately.
Well packaged is an understatement. The guitar is in a styrofoam protector inside the heavy cardboard shipping box. It would
be fairly hard to damage it. The instrument seems to be well made and is pleasing to the eye. The neck attaches at the 14th.
fret. I like that because it gives you that little more when playing up the neck. I play slide and finger style, both in open G
tuning. After tuning the guitar, the sustain was lacking somewhat. I opened up the guitar and found a couple of minor issues
with the cone to bisquit bridge fit. Also there was some tape under the resonator cover that I removed. Once corrected the
guitar came to life with excellent volume, tone and sustain. These were assembly issues and I won't take away from a super
nice product at an unbeatable price. If you don't believe it, shop around and you will see !!!!!!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013"Love the guitar! The seller A+, packed well, guitar as described. No problems. I paid 399. shipped, amazing. Once I started playing it, I felt that it could resonate much more though. I had read the other comments about this guitar, and I pulled the resonator off, and sure enough, there was tape on the back, just like the other person said. It went all around the top plate, effectively dulling the sound, acting as a gasket. Also there was black felt under the bridge. If you flip the strings over, there will be no possibility of the bridge contacting the metal resonator plate. I think that is why the felt was there in the first place, to dull the buzzing that would happen if the metal bridge where the strings are attached at the base naturally would fall. But by flipping the strings, there is no problem at all. And the sound is great! I rounded the maple inside the box, + new strings, flipped the new strings so the ends show, not so the ends are hidden. This allows better resonating. The resonator itself, the biscuit, and the metal work is all excellent in my opinion. The neck and tuners are great. The maple that goes from the neck to the base could have been worked better, but I sanded and rounded it, and I think it gave it better sound by detailing it that way. The wooden dowels that are in effect, a type of sound post, are not centered on my guitar, but I don't think it makes much difference on this guitar as far as sound, but it is glued in, and screwed in at the top, so no way is it going to move. The strings it comes with are not what you want in my opinion. The set up is somewhat low, I did not touch the set up at all. It seems fine, no buzzing, no dead sounds. I wish I could play it better, and now I'm working on THAT!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2013Good sound, very heavy so a solid feel. It has a metal body that gives it an interesting sound and feel. Great deal on Amazon as other places have it as almost 2x as much. Even with that I would expect some type of case, gig bag, something. It's a good guitar and I'd buy again, it would be 5 stars with some type of case.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2013Nice guitar value for the $300 price. Well packaged in original Fender box and foam coffin. Good setup for easy acoustic playing, but is a bit too low for slide playing. Nice sound with clear low, mid and high tones. The continental Eastern European hand-spun cone looks similar to a National hotrod cone. Construction seems sturdy with a quality feel. The metal body is nicely finished with potentially sharp edges feeling smooth, unlike another metal body resonator I have. The Hawaiian motif is understated and not always obvious. Overall much better quality than I expected in a made in China Fender. Nothing like the MIC Squire line. I would buy the Fender FR-55 resonator again given the same offer.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2013I have always wanted a resonator guitar for playing blues slide and bluegrass music. The price on this guitar almost kept me away thinking what is wrong with it. It arrived well boxed in a foam coffin and once I changed the strings it plays wonderfully. The Hawaiian motif is especially striking when perched on its stand in the light. All in all a great deal on a great product!
