I have to say I was very impressed with this DVD Rom Drive; you just put a blank DVD in, Apple shows it as a blank disk, you put your files on it, then click burn.

No need for Toast or any external DVD software; I just had a great technical support call from the company (who I left a message for and within an hour got a call back!), and they walked me through the process. He even told me that IDVD would burn movies (haven't tried that yet, but my need was to burn Data discs, so I'll try that next I guess when I get a free minute). It's plug and play, but the only thing that got me was that I was used to a CD of drivers and software to install, but had I put in a blank DVD, I would have figured this all out and saved the Customer Service Rep a call, so that was my mistake really. Has nothing to do with the company or their product at all.

Needless to say they get my recommendation to buy their product; you won't be disappointed. The only thing I'd say is that it requires OSX 10.4 or better (I'm running Snow Leopard so it's fine) and my DVD is just burning away nicely while I'm typing this review. :)

I ordered this external DVD, because the superdrive that I had for my MacAir spits the CDs out without reading it. I had paid $79.99+tax to Apple when I purchased it 2 years ago, and i seldom used it. I was disappointed with the superdrive. Sometimes I need a DVD drive to read archive documents and write them on CDs again. I was looking for a used superdrive on amazon because I did not want to pay that much again. I saw this item, it said it had Panasonic drive in it, so I wanted to give a shot.

The product reminds me of the PC-laptop style DVD drives, the way you insert a CD etc, with a mac look as it has an aluminum outer shell. So far worked great and it was almost half the price. Now that all mac products are without a superdrive, this becomes inevitable for those of us who need a DVD drive occasionally. The drive works instantly as you plug it in, OS X mountain lion recognized it immediately, and I have used it to read and write CDs and DVDs.
I will keep posting if anything happens to my external drive.

this is obviously a very good item as the many reviews show. My new iMac does not have a dvd drive, so you need an external if you use discs.

my fault, but I thought this was a slot drive. I guess I don't know enough to know it would called such if it was a slot dvd drive. It's made by Archgon, which seems to be a secret in the amazon listings. I discovered they are a somewhat well known company.

it worked off of one usb input but has a Y cable in case it needs more power. using 2 inputs would upset me, but it didn't need it and worked off of only one of the usb cables. Just plugged it in to my computer, cd went right to itunes. DVD up and played with DVD player.

a disc must be manually inserted by pushing a button on the unit. for me it is hard to see, but very quickly becomes instinctive to the touch.

you must push the cd down strongly onto the drive and push in the tray. The tray and unit are strong and sturdy, seemingly solidly built.

Eject through iTunes or the icon that will show on desktop and finder when in use; the keyboard function will NOT eject a disc.

It certainly seems to be a strong, well constructed drive. It does the job and is easy to use. Very pleased with it so far.

Bought as a "super drive" for my new mac mini, a little more pricey than your average disk drive but this is well worth it.
The main selling points to me were:
-look and feel
-performance

After seeing solid good reviews I did not hesitate to buy this, be warned tho! as aluminum varies in exact color it matches all my mac accessories at a glance but if you look too close they are all off but a little but nothing to whine about.

Unless needed this stays in my desk drawer and hooks up easy and quick, uses two usb slots, I highly recommend getting a multiplier for all your other accessories. Even worked as a booting disk drive to help me instal windows 8 and linux.

If both looks and performance matter to you, this is the mac accessory you are looking for.

I have an intel Core Duo iMac I purchased in 2007 that has been running great with no real issues until the cd/dvd drive went on it. I took it to the local Apple store to get fixed and they would not touch it, too old. They suggested a couple of authorized repair places near me. They said the same thing. I searched online and at Amazon and found this drive and thought i would take a chance. By using my Amazon points the drive cost me only $30.00 and it works great. I've been able to burn DVDs and CD with no problems and watch movies with no complaints. Because it was made for Apple products I just had to plug it into a usb slot in the back of the computer. Buy a new computer... I don't think so Apple.
