I bought this to replace an ancient Patriot Xporter XT Boost 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF8GUSB when I built a new PC complete with USB 3.0 ports. Among the reasons I like the Patriot drives is the rubber exterior that provides excellent shock protection in case of a drop. One hazard is the cap that you can forget to replace and lose, although I've not had that problem yet.

In terms of performance, this drive is a mixed bag. In the description that Amazon provides, it cites speeds of up to 90MB/second. Unfortunately, that only pertains to read speeds. A visit to the Patriot web site will uncover that they only claim write speeds of up to 30MB/second. Their claimed write speeds for the old USB 2.0 XT drives? Also 30MB/second. That's right, the manufacturer claims exactly the same speed for the "faster" USB 3.0 drives that they did for the last generation.

My own tests not only confirm that this drive doesn't write faster than previous versions, it was actually about 10% slower whether copying one large file or numerous small files. I should add here, that this again only refers to write speeds. If you have data on this drive and copy it to your PC via USB 3.0 it will probably be about 4 times as fast as the older drives.

I should add that most USB 3.0 drives offer similar speeds as this one, especially at this price point. I ended up ordering a Lexar JumpDrive Triton 32 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive LJDNV32GCRBNA in order to get the kind of blazing speed I'd been expecting.Read more ›

I am constantly using USB drives to carry files and move them around between different computers and servers. I build a lot of computers and I use the USB drives to carry BIOS systems, drivers, firmware and utilities. I also use them to move photographs and home videos between computers and to other family members homes. In order to test this USB drive I used a USB 3.0 port on a powerful computer using an ASUS Sabertooth X79 mother board and an INTEL 3930K CPU overclocked to 4.4 GHz with 32 gig of RAM.

I took the memory stick out of the package and I transferred 55.4 GIG on files to the stick that averaged 660 MB per file. The files were transferred to the memory stick in 45 minutes and 21.4 seconds at an average speed of 20.35 MB/second. That is certainly not a speed record and what it shows is that this memory stick has good performance but not great. I then wrote the same files to a SATA III hard drive and using 2% of the computer's CPU capacity. It took 22 minutes and 30 seconds to read the data and write it to the SATA III drive at an average speed of 40.9 MB/s. The USB drive is rated at 90MB/s.

I then read the USB drive and wrote 20.2 GB of files to a SSD SATA III drive and the average speed was 41.1 MB/s. It transferred those files in 8 minutes and 24 seconds. The stick is rated at read speed of up to 90 MB/s and the max I saw was 52.5 MB/s but only briefly.

This USB stick does have a USB LED that flashes when the drive is working. Many people prefer the LED to make sure that files are being transferred. It is also ruggedly packaged in a rubberized coating and it comes with a rubber top cap. The rubber cap top fits snuggly onto the USB connector and does protect it well. It also fits onto the end of the drive for storage were a lanyard might fit.Read more ›

Just to be fair, I have lost all my data on this drive. However, my issue is with the overall design of the drive. At first the rubber exterior was quite rigid, but after a while it became soft and eventually pulled off of the internal board like a sleeve. I have taken photos to show how this drive looks with the rubber sleeve off. I don't believe the drive would have been compromised and thus lost my data if the design or construction had been better. I believe the repeated removal of the cover did indeed compromise the internal electronics. No matter how careful I tried to remove the drive it still slipped off. Bad design. If your unit is slipping, back up your data.

I use this drive as a back-up for my Dropbox files. I've synced it three times over the last few months. It gets very light use.

Today, after moving some files, I tried to remove the Patriot from my USB slot, and the case pulled away from the "innards." The drive still works, but the cover no longer stays on.

Proceed with caution. I'm heading for SuperGlue.

I enjoyed this drive for the week that it lasted. Was fast enough for me and plenty of storage at a reasonable price on sale. However the rubber case and plastic frame inside all came apart when I pulled it out of a USB port. I wasn't overly rough with it the thing just isn't well constructed. Still functional but no case anymore just the exposed board. Boo.

The drive itself works as advertised. it's VERY fast when using it in a USB 3.0 port. But the first time I went to remove it from the port the rubberized housing slipped off like it wasn't even attached. So i'll be returning it and getting another one that has a bit better construction.

I wouldn't say DON'T buy one of these. but I would say buyer beware. I'm sure not all of them break like this, but it seems that more than a few have from what I read in the reviews. i bought one because I figured i wouldn't get one of the defective ones. But I did.
