So it all boils down to this - if you have extra money laying around or you absolutely need these minor tweaks on existing programs then buy this update, you'll love it. It has a beautiful and sleek interface and works everybit as well as CS5.1. However, if you actually use Photoshop to make a living and don't care whether the interface is sleek and pretty but are more interested in value vs. performance, then stick with CS5.1 and wait for more than "bells and whistles" to fork over good money.
Dont get sucked in if you havent already. Run as fast as you can. Run away, Run away from adobe as fast as you can.
Oh and a note to Adobe: when I'm unable to complete the purchase of your product on your website, and am told by Support to "try another browser" (I was using Chrome), this does not inspire confidence in your company to deliver bug-free software.
At this point I have an expensive program that is useless. I have owned various versions of Photoshop since about 1996 and have never had a problem.
Let me say at the start that I think Photoshop is a great product. However, as noted below, not for me in its latest incarnation.
My older version displays the toolbox and textual material appropriately on my 2560 x 1600 resolution monitors. I use multiple monitors keeping the toolbox on one screen and the in-progress image on another.
I had purchased CS2 but stopped using it except for rare occasions (when some new feature makes up for the lose in readability), when I found the toolbox and textual displays so small as to be almost unusable.
A higher resolution monitor and CS6 would seem a great combination. However, this, at least at the time of this review, is not true with MS operating systems (I can't address its usability on Apple systems).
If PS Version 6.0 could display correctly sized toolbox icons and textual information on higher resolution monitors, one might think this would not be too difficult for Adobe to implement in later Photoshop versions. Sadly, this conclusion is apparently wrong.
Adobe has gone through a number of CS versions with the same extremely small display problem I found in CS2. This problem is still present in the trial version of CS6 I downloaded from Adobe.
I called Adobe technical support, to see if perhaps I was missing an option in CS6 to increase toolbox and informational display sizes. Adobe support was helpful, generous with their time, and extremely courteous. They provided the answer to my question, but not a satisfactory solution to the problem. I was told the only way to increase toolbox size was to lower screen resolution. Obviously, this would defeat the value of having a higher resolution monitor.
So, if you have a monitor with a modern high resolution display from 1680 x 1050 up, it's probably best to try the latest Photoshop version before you buy, to see whether the extra features are worth the loss in readability.
I use PS exclusively for improving photographs. I can accomplish, possibly, 90-95% of what I need in the older PS Version 6.0. You may find similar results.
You can see Adobe's initial contact with me (from Peter Green, Adobe Customer Advocate) here in the comments to this posting. Mr. Green suggested that I move further discussion of my problem from Amazon to elsewhere and post a picture of the problem there. However, I had already posted a picture of the problem here on Amazon.
When I sent this information about the screen shot showing the problem already being posted here, Mr. Green's communication to me completely stopped.
So, I suspect this is a problem Adobe is already aware of and for which they currently, and unfortunately, have no solution.
If I am wrong, and there is a solution, Mr. Green can certainly post a comment to this review, and let us all know what that solution is. If no further comment with solution is received, this likely suggests this is an inherent problem in CS6 for which there is no solution.
If this problem cannot be fixed or worked around, as Mr. Green's lack of response would imply. I suggest potential buyers with higher resolution monitors skip the purchase of this version, until a fix is available, and purchase an earlier version such a PS 6.0.It may be more cost-effective as well as improve usability to purchase an earlier, rather than the latest, version of Photoshop. Perhaps Adobe will get it right in an update to CS6 or in CS7, or perhaps the soon to be released edition of MS OS will provide for an easy resolution of the display size problem - I hope so.
If you look at my screen capture above, you can see how surprisingly small CS6's main informational displays are, and how difficult they are to use on a higher resolution monitor.
Thus, this version cannot recommended for use with higher resolution monitors.
