Oh this is so rare. A story about riding that doesn't sugar coat everything; how brutally hard it is to enter the sport. That one kid saying "My arms are killing me!" The horse taking that boy on a "run away" and he says "this is it I'm done!" or something like that. Watch that instructor racing on a horse after him aware of the danger they're both flying, what athletes!
That moment that shows the boy later on kissing the horse on the nose, it shows how complicated the relationship between rider and horse is; that looks like the horse that took off with him( with all the forgiveness of childhood). It doesn't show the usual character arch that's grown so worn out; spunky kid wins race against all odds. It's more compelling to see what makes the day to day struggle so hard. I had to laugh when the instructor asks if he's the boys hero and the boy says "No!"

A well made film. As a horseman, and having close connections to French racing, I especially appreciated the film. I don't think you would have to be into racing as much as I am to enjoy it, as the stories of young aspiring riders is something anyone can relate to who has aspired to anything athletic. The only thing I wish the film had done differently would be if they could have done some follow up on the young men who they followed and given the viewer insight into their continuing stories.
