I'm normally not a fan of reality shows, but I took a chance on this one and I'm glad I did. This series takes you inside the lives of several of the jockeys at the Santa Anita racetrack in California. Some of the featured jockeys are Mike Smith, Chantal Sutherland, Joe Talamo, Aaron Gryder, Jon Court, and Kayla Stra. Mike Smith is already a well established jockey, a hall of famer, and recently came to national attention as the rider of Zenyatta. Joe Talamo is only 18, but is already gaining recognition at Santa Anita for being a talented, if somewhat reckless, rider. Chantal Sutherland is a competitive female jockey, as well as being Mike Smith's girlfriend. Jon Court and Aaron Gryder are jockeys who have been riding for many years, but have yet to really make their mark. Kayla Stra is a young female jockey from Australia. Being a newcomer to the Santa Anita race track, Kayla struggles to find trainers who will take a chance on her.

There are 12 total episodes of Season 1. Each episode is 30 minutes long, and usually focuses on one or two of the jockeys. Most episodes contain at least two races. You see what goes on prior to race day both in the jockey's personal and professional lives. Although the show gives you glimpses into the personal lives of the jockeys, it is mainly centered around their racing. There are a couple of meltdowns that occur in the jockey room (curse words are bleeped), but for the most part, these jockeys display good sportsmanship. They are all very competitive and will not give an inch to a friend or significant other (Mike/Chantal) on the racetrack, but at the same time they demonstrate a genuine concern for each other. One episode features Mike Smith giving the young Joe Talamo advice as he tries to bounce back from a losing streak.

I first watched this series on Animal Planet and loved it. I'm not much for re-watching things...but I thought this one was worth buying. Very interesting insight into the life of a jockey. Exciting to follow along in their lives. 'Real' reality TV without any staged drama. Get to see their personal and professional side. Fun to watch some good races--commentary is great.

As a horse racing enthusiast I really enjoyed Jockeys Season 1 & 2! You get fantastic look into the life of a jockey and how hard it really is to make it and how quickly it can all go away! The production from Discovery Channel/Animal Planet is incredible! They have full access into all parts of a horse race and beyond! I expected more horse racing but I realized its much more about the riders then he trainers or horses themselves. Jockeys was filmed at an excellent location in Santa Anita Park in California which is an amazing racetrack and flows a number of jockeys from the beginning of the fall winter meet to the Kentucky Derby and chronicles their path to run of for the roses! I highly recommended Jockeys for any race fan but also anyone else! Its not you typical trash reality show! each episode was entertaining and wanting to watch the next one asap to see what happens!

Loved the racing stories but like all reality some of the relationship problems are done to death! If you like racing there are some of the best racehorses running at the time of this story.

My daughter is horse mad, and she will watch anything with horses. I did not expect to like this series but was drawn in because I know so little about professional horse racing. Wathcing unknown jockeys try to work their way up, and well known jockeys handle the pressure of staying on top, is suprisingly entertaining. There is race footage as well as behind the scenes footage. You see jockeys interact with their families, fascinating to think they race for their job like I go to the office for mine. There is little to no manufactured drama like other reality shows, which I appreciate. It's also nice for the show to be family friendly so we can watch it with our daughter (she is 12, younger kids would likely be bored). I would recommend it.

I chose stars because it involves facts about racing - which I found very interesting - but also gives the personal side of racing. It shows how the jockey system works and their personal relationships. It is not great TV but pretty good TV.
