About the Author

John Bunyan of Elstow and Bedford, is important to the Reformed tradition, since his famous allegory is one of the chief avenues by which the Puritan spirit entered the mainstream of the English Reformation. With Calvinism as foundational, Bunyan’s prolific writings and fervent preaching embodied a vibrant awareness of Reformed theological thought and its implication for Christian living. The author of more than sixty books, he gained a unique place in history through Grace Abounding (1666), The Pilgrim’s Progress (pt. 1, 1678; pt. 2, 1684), The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680), and The Holy War (1682). Other works were primarily expository, doctrinal, and practical. Bunyan joined the Bedford Baptist Church (1654) and soon began preaching in nearby villages. Prosecuted under an Elizabethan act against nonconformity, he was imprisoned for three months, which was extended to twelve years, with a brief respite during the sixth year. Bunyan emphasized the centrality of the Bible as the foundation for belief and conduct, stressing the grace of God as the basis of predestination, the focal point of eternal salvation. Initiative in the salvation of sinners belonged to God, since God elected, within God’s purpose and framework of grace, certain individuals to eternal life. Subscribing to the doctrine of “effectual calling,” Bunyan believed it was impossible to resist the call because of the power with which the Holy Spirit accompanied and illuminated the sinner’s understanding. None of the elect could fall from grace. Though Bunyan was primarily an adherent of the Calvinist tradition, his view of God as Savior, providing salvation from divine wrath rather than God as sovereign ruler, and his belief in the necessity of justification through grace alone showed influence of Luther. JOHN BUNYAN (1628-1688) was a Puritan preacher and writer in England. Bunyan had very little schooling. He followed his father in the tinker's trade, and served in the parliamentary army from 1644 to 1647. In 1655, Bunyan became a deacon and began preaching. He experienced marked success from the start and was the pastor of the Bedford church.

Bunyan is the author of The Pilgrim's Progress which he wrote in 1676 while imprisoned for preaching without a license. His numerous other titles include Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and Holy War.

Demonstrates the importance of knowing and meditating on God's Word

I've been looking forward to reading this book for years ever since I read Bunyan's classis Pilgrim's Progress, I've wanted to read Grace Abounding to learn more about his incredible man of faith. I also recently read The Hidden Smile of God by John Piper who introduces the reader to three incredible men of God including Bunyan. So actually reading the journey of Bunyan himself in his own words was thrilled...but difficult at the same time. Bunyan struggled greatly with the concept of grace; he wrestled with understanding how God's grace could be sufficient to save a sinner as great as he. Grace Abounding is a peering into the soul of Bunyan as he goes through this deep personal battle wanting to believe that God was able to cleanse him of all unrighteousness, but constantly confronted with the holiness of the divine.

Just over half way through the book, Bunyan surrenders to the will of God in his life. He finally and fully grasp that the grace of God was truly sufficient. Then his heart is set aflame to share this grace with others and he becomes one of the great preachers and writers of all time, even though he goes on to spend a dozen years confined to prison for preaching contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Personally, it was interesting to see the cultural battle Bunyan faced at the time looking back from my vantage 500 years later to see that America is the beneficiary of his great struggles with the prevailing church of the day. As Bunyan sat in prison, he wrote about the great journey from a metal worker to a pastor of the gospel of Christ - in allegory form for the Pilgrim's Progress and in autobiographical form in Grace Abounding.

I can understand why many believe this book is a classic - the thoughts and insights that Bunyan has into the Word of God were profound and significant. It was amazing to read how Scripture flowed through his mind irrigating every thought so that his life bore much fruit. I wouldn't recommend the book to a younger reader, it is a difficult read, but well worth the effort.

This is a very hard read. I was half way through the book and ready to quit. It was so discouraging to continually read of his spiritual battles and never seeming to get any peace. Or at best a short-lived peace. But at just over 50% of the book he finally came out of it and got on with his ministering and jail time. All in all, it was very hard reading, but I'm glad I finished it!

We live in a day of easy believism where we are told to just pray this prayer and you are in. Then I read the testimony of great spiritual giants like John Bunyan and Charles Spurgeon, and how they struggled to enter the kingdom and it makes me think we may just have things turned upside down in the world today. John Bunyan struggled through the first half of this book claiming that satan was whispering lies into his ears. I'm thinking that satan is still whispering lies into our ears, only we are believing them!

Don't quit at half way through, it gets better! The last half gives details of his ministry, arrest and imprisonment. There is another edition of this book that has 25% more material in it. I would recommend finding that edition. I looked for it by clicking, in My Account, on the actual book, but is said that link no longer worked. It even includes the accounts of when he and his wife went before authorities trying to get him released. Also someone else included a short account of his last years of ministry and his death. Sorry I can't find it for you!

One of my favorite books is "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan. I just finished reading Bunyan's autobiography called "Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners," so now I cannot wait to read Pilgrim's Progress again!

John Bunyan's autobiography is almost solely focused around how he became a Christian, and then how he defended himself against the Church of England after he became a follower of Jesus Christ.

At times Bunyan's account of his struggle with his self-doubts about whether God would ever receive a sinner such as himself are absolutely heart-wrenching. He clung so desperately to the Scriptures that said God wanted to forgive him, and yet beat himself up with other Scriptures that talked about the vileness of sin. He felt that his sin had so wounded God, that he was unsure if he could ever be forgiven.

In a way, I found this quite refreshing. It reminded me of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's warning against "cheap grace," where far too many people trivialize the high price Christ paid on the Cross. But John Bunyan acutely felt his sin.

So once he finally received God's forgiveness, he was a changed man who wanted to tell the world about his Savior. Unfortunately for the time in which he lived, his message of salvation wasn't "sanctioned" by the Church of England, which landed him in jail for over a decade. The second-half of his autobiography is a play-by-play account of his interaction with the judges who tried and sentenced him. In this account, we read the words of a man who thoroughly knew Scripture, and knew how to use it!

It's a fascinating biography, which I think any reader will enjoy.

There are many books of coming to salvation in Christ. But not many that show the struggles with sin and the battle one of Christ’s children has in such depth and clarity.
Count the cost before saying yes isn’t preached from the pulpit much these days. This will help with the calculations!
