Customers are mixed about the ease of use of the electronic cable. Some mention that the USB cable is for easier programming, the software is simplistic and intuitive enough, and the Chirp has some helpful instructions built in. However, others say that the instructions are not the best, thesoftware for the UV-5R was not as advanced or easy to use as the Baofeng software for, and installation was a little tricky.

FIX & FIGURED OUT!First let me say that before I correctly installed the proper driver first, plugging the Cable into the Radio & the PC would put the Baofeng UV-5R into Transmit mode, and cause my PC to shut down. Here is how you fix that!Important: DO NOT plug in the cable to the radio until you get the driver installed. This may cause an excessive power demand from your PC's USB port and cause shut down or damage. Here is the quick & easy way to install a working driver that is already inside of Windows.Plug in the USB Radio Cable to your PC only.Wait for Windows to recognize the new device. (If Windows does not recognize device, go to Device Manager to configure USB Cable driver.)When asked for a driver/location select Install Driver Manually.Select HAVE DISC button. For the TYPE of device scroll down & select PORTSFor the driver manufacturer scroll down & select PROLIFIC(The USB Serial GPS should be selected on right half of window.)Windows will give you a warning about the driver, just ignore and continue.Make sure you look to remember which Port it used. (Ex. COM7)If you forget which Port is used, you can bring up Device Manager to find the device & port.If you install Chirp software, you will need to configure it for the Baofeng UV-5R. Make sure you select the correct Port# or it will not find your radio. It will also give you a warning about Baofeng compatibility, just ignore that and continue to "clone" the information from your radio into Chirp software. When the radio is SENDING information to the software app, the light on the radio will blink RED.When the radio is RECEIVING information from the software app, the light will blink GREEN.Below is an alternate method for installing the software that came on the mini CD-ROM disc.Okay folks...I had the similar problems of not being able to install the driver, nor the WIN7 OS being able to assign a correct one so here is what I did to make it work - EASY!1. Insert the small drivers disc into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.2. Navigate to the root directory and you will see the Folder "M_K"3. Go inside the "M_K" folder and you will see a folder named "USB"4. Go inside the USB folder and you will see another folder named "新版驱动" Example: F:\M_K\USB\新版驱动 (where "F:" is your CD/DVD drive.)5. Inside the folder named "新版驱动" you will see a file named: "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.7.0.exe"6. Copy that file to a temporary folder somewhere on your hard drive (C:)7. You can now run the file without it crashing!8. The installation should go without any issues and report that the USB driver has been installed correctly. For some reason, the file is not able to run from the root directory on the mini CD-ROM, and needs to be copied to your computer to run.You may also want to right-click ("I said, RIGHT-CLICK!") and select "Run as Administrator" if there are problems. I didn't have any, but I am logged on as Administrator of my machine and only have one logon account for this machine. Please gimme a thumbs up by clicking the "this helped me out" button below!
I ordered this Baofeng programming cable to transfer a bunch of frequencies as well as access the squelch settings of my Baofeng UV-5RVP Hi-Power, dual band radio. At first I assumed that it would work only on my Baofeng handheld transceiver, but was pleasantly surprised that this cable also works for my TYT UV8-R and Welink M5 handheld transceivers.
Although I primarily use the popular CHIRP software, I discovered that this cable also works well with the factory supplied programming software from TYT and Baofeng. If you have a Welink M5, Google for the SainSonic RST-599 programming software as the waterproof Welink M5 handheld is actually based on the RST-599.
The programming cable is well built and the USB-to-serial electronics are nicely encapsulated into the head. Note that you must ensure that the dual pronged jacks snap into your handheld's mic and earphone sockets snugly for this cable to work with your programming software. If CHIRP fails to communicate with your radio, always check whether the pins snap into your radio tightly.
If you're a Windows user, this cable seems to select COM3 or COM4 as the default communications port. Windows 10 users should take special note: you'll require the older Windows Vista Prolific driver ver 3.2.0.0. for this cable to work properly. If Windows 10 automatically updates to its latest driver, you'll have to roll back to the version 3.2.0.0 via Device Manager (look under the Ports (COM & LPT) category).
In a nutshell, I am very pleased with this product. There are other programming cables for amateur radio equipment out there but this one works not only for Baofeng radios, but with any brand and model that the CHIRP software (actually it's donation-ware) supports.
First, there were no problems with it fitting correctly into the radio. Some say they have this issue, I didn't. Second, per the instructions at Miklor's website, I connected the cable to a USB port and LET WINDOWS (Win 7) install the driver as I would any device. I did not use the cd that came with the cable. I checked the device manager and, WONDER OF WONDERS, it installed properly, recognizing the cable as a "Prolific". Period, end of story. Again, I NEVER used the cd that came with the cable and I didn't use the driver at Miklor's (which, to his credit, says might be the case). Then, I installed CHIRP on my computer (Compaq CQ56-201NR, running Windows 7), using the Youtube videos from Benjamin Gaston as my guide. One note, I'm having a challenge importing CSV files into CHIRP, but I'm confident I'll get to the bottom of that today - keep getting "No Channels Found", but this isn't a radio problem OR a CHIRP problem - I'm thinking it's a formatting issue with the csv file. Anyway, I imported a file directly from "Radio Reference" of repeaters in my town and it worked like a charm (CHIRP lets you download from 4 different sources, which is very nice)... the radio (BaoFeng UV5R, reviewed it, too) accepted the upload perfectly and I'm getting activity! As I'm not licensed, I did disable the transmit feature on my radio (set "Duplex" to OFF for each frequency in CHIRP), so no inadvertent transmissions. I'm studying for the Technician exam, have passed a mock test, so I'm on my way. I did a lot of reading and watching YT videos before I attempted any of this, and it paid off. HAVE FUN!!
This works but do not use the included drivers or windows update drivers. Instructions below.
Miklor has already written, published and hosted everything you need. His links are included at the bottom of this review.
My summarized instructions for Windows 7 users - * This cable does not use the newest prolific driver set, this is what windows will go and fetch. * Go get the older 3.2.0.0 driver, available from Miklor, here - http://www.miklor.com/COM/software/Win_Driver_Prolific_3.2.0.0.exe * Install the driver * Plug the cable in to the computer (radio not attached) * If windows installs a driver or fails, so be it, let it finish, this doesn't matter. * Open device manager look under Ports (COM & LPT) for either "Prolific..." or "USB serial..." this may have a warning triangle. * Right click on it and select "Update Driver" > "Browse my computer..." > "Let me pick..." * The next screen should show you the 3.2.0.0 driver you have already installed / added to the Windows driver repository * When this finished you should now have "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (...)" * Right click on this > properties > driver tab * Verify that the 3.2.0.0 driver is installed.
You're now all set, get some software like Chirp and program your radio. - http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ To connect the radio to your computer, do it in the following order. * Power on the radio, put it on a freq with no transmissons happening, power it off * Plug the cable in computer * Plug the cable in powered off radio (make sure it's in all the way) * Power on the radio
