I figure the vast majority of damage to smart phones is from dropping them onto hard surfaces, and so I like cases that are 100% soft rubbery material. This absorbs the shock of impact while also protecting against scratches, and doesn't make a phone too thick. I used an Otterbox Impact on my iPhone 4 and loved it. The home button was a little hard to push, and it ended up stretching over time, but for $10 it did its job well. Otterbox doesn't make one for the iPhone 5, so I looked and found this one by griffin.

Overall I'm very impressed. I fits snug and isn't loose at all. I've only had it a week, so we'll have to see if it stretches over time. I'm so confident in its protective ability that several times already I've intentionally dropped it onto hard tile floors from 5 feet just to demonstrate it to friends. It attracts a lot of lint, but that doesn't bother me. And it doesn't slide easily, so it's less likely to slide off a high table or non-level surface.
Another area where it really shines is the Home and Lock buttons. There is a bump on the inside where the case makes contact with each of those buttons, so there's absolutely no empty space there. When you push on the case it immediately presses the buttons, making them very crisp and responsive. Most other cases have some give to them, which makes pressing the buttons a little difficult. Not so with this case.

Now, for my only gripe about the case: the volume buttons. It's utterly bewildering that they failed to use the same technique on the volume buttons as they did with the Home and Lock buttons. I bought one of these cases for my fiancé's new iPod touch and liked it so much and decided to get one for my iPhone 5. Fits perfectly and snugged. Easy to use all the bottoms. The charger and headphone plug in perfectly. I was going to return it because of the color but decided to keep it. At least the bright color makes it easy to find the phone.

I bought both this case and the Ballistic Smooth. This case seems to be just what I need. I like the Ballistic Smooth, but I like this case much better.

The iPhone home button is delightfully easier to click than without the case! Same with the sleep button. The volume buttons, not so much, but I am going to put a dab of thin cardboard beneath each button cover. That will fix those if I have problems. That's what I did for my Dell Streak 5 when I bought a $3 TPU case from Ebay. Worked perfectly.

Actually, I will have to do that for the volume buttons. I just retested that function. The volume buttons do not respond unless I use my thumb nail instead of the end of my thumb as I had been doing. Or press quite firmly. That's a shame. You see, both the sleep key and the home button have a molded "extension" inside the case. That causes the case to actually be ready for an instant response. And it is lovely! Also, they are molded with a crisp, definite edge, which makes them easy to feel.

The volume button covers are less raised in height and texture than the others. So if your thumb is dry, or calloused, and therefore less sensitive than, say, your index finger, you may have a little difficulty feeling the volume buttons. That's #1.

#2 is that instead of having that extra molded "extension" pressing upon them, like the home and sleep button areas, there is a recessed pocket over them from inside the case. The volume buttons fit into that pocket. That's kinda dumb. I wonder why the designers didn't catch that. No matter, though. That little pocket will make it much easier for me to make my own extensions with a dab of double sided tape and a dot of cardboard. I'm an American!!! We adapt and push forward!Read more ›

This rubber case is great for gripping the phone securely in your hand, or putting it down on a slick surface and knowing it will stay put. However, if you keep your phone in your pants pocket, you will find the rubber makes it harder to get the phone in and out of any but the loosest pockets. The volume buttons are hard to press because of the way the case is designed, so that's a bit frustrating. Power, home and mute buttons, however, are accessible and responsive. Overall, the case fits well on the SE and, together with a glass screen protector, will probably do a good job of protecting the phone from incidental bangs and minor falls. The rubber feels rugged, and there is a good deal of cushion on the corners and sides.

This case is sturdy and super protective. I've dropped my iPhone 5 a few times and because I had this case on, my phone is good as new! It's a medium hard pliable plastic (kind of a thick rubber feel to it) and its easy to hold/grip. It would be perfect if there was a round cutout in the back to display the apple logo but as far as protecting the phone... 5 stars all the way.

I had this same case from Griffin for my iPhone 4 and loved it - I will say that this iPhone 5 case appears to be made from a slightly different compound, so the volume/shutter buttons are harder to press than the iPhone 4 version (seems "stiffer"), but a great case nonetheless. If you want a protective case that has some "grip" to it, but slim enough to slide in your pocket - this is it. Maybe it will soften with use...
