I was seriously considering selling these before I swapped the pads because I was so displeased with the comfort with the stock pads. With the stock pads, the inside of the cups (the cover of the drivers), pressed up against my ears (not a nice feeling), the headphones clamped against my upper jaw (also not nice), and the headphones felt too far low on my head. YMMV, but many reviews of these headphones say the same things regarding comfort. Bad bad bad. I decided to try the Brainwavz XL velour memory foam pads availble at Amazon for $28.50 and highly recommend them. The Brainwavs velour pads transform the comfort of these from very bad to very good (but still not perfect as the headband does not adjust width-wise). Do it.
These are very light-weight.
No "head hammer" feeling here. The cups, drivers, headband, and wing supports are light-weight and that lightness goes along nicely with their sound.
There are very open headphones.
As advertised on the Audio Technica AD1000x webpage, these are open-sounding. I'd use the word "airy" too. The sound-stage is pretty wide, not huge like the HD800 that I once briefly owned (and people say that the AD900x are wider still, though I have not sampled those), but it's definitely still wide.
The imaging is the party-trick of these headphones.
It is so neat to listen to Pink Floyd's Division Bell album (or any Pink Floyd really) and just appreciate the locations of the different instruments along the sound-stage. There's good reason people have called these "The Gaming King" headphones.
Strings and vocals sound majestic on these.
If the imaging is the party-trick of the AD1000x, then strings and vocals are how they make their living. Voices are forward and crisp, not buried beneath the other details going on. You can pick out those little breaths and saliva sounds singers make before uttering their words (kinda gross I know, but also neat!). Stringed instruments are lively, and I can just immerse myself in them. I love it.
These are what I consider to be bass-normal headphones.
Other people call these bass-light headphones, but I think that is likely because there are just so many headphones out there that emphasize the bass that it's easy to think these are missing bass, especially if you're used to closed-back headphones. But after listening to these for a while, my ears have adjusted to the bright, open and airy sound-signature, and I find that there is sufficient bass even for hip-hop and electronic music. Now, I should probably point out that I don't like dark headphones, and if you do, you may not like this sound-signature. Then again, maybe your hearing will adjust and you'll find an appreciation for it. You never know!
WHY OH WHY S THE CABLE NOT DETACHABLE?
It's also 10' long and straight. I've run it over with my chair wheel like 7 times now.
Easy to drive
40 ohms, 102 dB/mW sensistivity. No powerful amp needed.
TO SUM UP: if imaging, vocals, strings, and lightness are keywords for your next headphones, then look no further. Punchy bass lovers look elsewhere.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016Style: ATH-AD1000XPattern: Open-Air HeadphonesVerified PurchaseOne of the hardest decisions for me to make was going with these headphone over the Senn 600 and 650s. By and large, I'm glad I did. The highs and midrange of these cans are like liquid butter... I heard things in songs that I never had before (I drove these with a combo O2 ODAC). If you listen to any song with a violin or other comparable string instrument be prepared to be
connected to the music in a way that you have never been connected before (One Wing Angel in FLAC). That being said, the area in which these cans could not keep up was in the frequency range of 20Hz to 90HZ... But that is to be expected with open headphones. In closing, I think every audio enthusiast should have a set of these cans in their arsenal due to how dumbfoundedly awesome these perform with soundscape detail in the highs, comfort, and character (ever so slightly warm).
PS. These absolutely excel at gaming. Battlefield IV never sounded better and I notice my KDR increasing due to the clarity of footsteps and moderate sounds raging these headphones offer.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017Style: ATH-AD1000XPattern: Open-Air HeadphonesVerified PurchaseI had these for about 6 months now.
In regards to sound, these are amazing. I want to say these are tremble/high mids focused and thus just own anything that focuses on female vocals, percussion, or strings. Compared to something like the fidelio x2's,the soundstage on these is not wide; however, you can tell where things are placed.
They're also built pretty well and light. Magnesium alloy is the cat's pajamas. It does get nicked if you bump against it something sharp and hard though...
If I had complaints, it would be in regards to the build and ergonomics:
1. The pads - pads are too thin. You can fix this by either putting a bit of foam or toilet paper inside the pad so now you can put your ear inside it or you can buy new pads altogether. If you want something more neutral I suggest sheepskin pads; however you lose what makes the ad1000x special (only do this if this is your only headphone and want something more universal)
2. The fit - there's no real tilt or swivel on the ear cups so the headphones will be at an odd angle to your ears unless you bend the band to actually fit on your head. However, I wouldn't bend the headphone. Just stuff/replace the pads and they should fit okay.
3. The cable - This is the only thing i don't have an easy fix for. It's a great cable; I'm just annoyed that the cable is not detachable.
Basically these sound amazing for music that does not focus on bass and most of the issues can be fixed by making the pads bigger. I recommend these.
Also, no amp is required.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2023Style: ATH-AD1000XPattern: Open-Air HeadphonesVerified PurchaseThe headphones were great for me, and I only used them when on a discord call, playing games that required good audio, or while traveling. But shortly after the warranty expired they started to die. The cord coming from the right ear suddenly became finnicky; moving it at all will cause it to be staticky and cut out. Especially with how expensive they are now, I really expected them to last longer.

Style: ATH-AD1000XPattern: Open-Air HeadphonesVerified PurchaseSo far I've played games on my PS4 and listened to music on Spotify and I gotta say I'm quite impressed. If you're looking for headphones to get you truly immersed into the game you're playing don't look any further! I can hear every little sound so clearly it makes playing games more enjoyable. You don't get a boom from bass notes but you do get a good clean hit nonetheless (this is due to the Open-Air design). As for music, I gotta say I've never heard my music sound so good before!

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Germany on May 17, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Great open headphone.
Style: ATH-AD1000XPattern: Open-Air HeadphonesVerified PurchaseThe Audio Technica AD1000X is an amazing sounding open headphone with great clarity and separation of sound, has great highs, not too much bass but it's there and it's good, everything's in the right place sound quality wise and they're easy to power.
To get the best, most optimal listening experience out of them you should only get these if you're looking for headphones to listen to while you're at home or other isolated environments since their driver is practically exposed so you will hear everything around yourself as if you weren't wearing them at all, and they leak A LOT of sound so you will definitely disturb anyone in the same room or behind a poorly isolated wall. If this is a problem for you or you need something portable then look for a closed or at least semi-open pair of headphones or something that's meant to be portable.
Big downside for many people might be that the cable is NOT detachable, but it's a nice, long, high quality cable with a robust metal connector and the build quality of the headphones themself is very good as well.
One thing I must note is that while the pads on them are comfortable, they're relatively thin and due to the size of the earcups and their round shape your ears will most probably touch the drivers and this can get very uncomfortable or slightly painful for some(I can't speak for everyone since everyone's head and ears are different), but someone on Ebay is selling very good thick replacement pads for the AD series which can fix this easily without altering the sound at all(I think for me they actually lowered the amount of sound leak a bit).
It took me a while to choose a pair of headphones in this price range but now that I have them I am definitely very satisfied.
