The Truth Beyond the Sky (The Epic of Aravinda Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 462 ratings

Twelve years after his mother's mysterious disappearance, Zahn's life is shattered by a discovery that will change everything.

Camping out on the island summit, Zahn is jolted awake by a brilliant object thundering down from the sky. Racing down to the impact, he discovers a crater in the silvery sand, and inside it, a triangular fragment made of an otherworldly material, moonlight sliding off of it at strange angles.

Conflicted and curious, Zahn decides to keep his discovery a secret. Taking it to the observatory means losing it forever—and with it, any chance of uncovering the truth. For days, he wrestles with the choice, hiding the fragment in his room and waiting for something, anything, to make sense.

Then, in the dead of night, a knock at his window changes everything.

A man dressed in a shimmering uniform is just outside, revealing that Zahn’s find is no mere fragment—it’s connected to a galactic conflict of unimaginable scale. Thrust into an interstellar adventure aboard a sentient starship with a cryptic captain, Zahn discovers a universe far more dangerous—and wondrous—than he ever dreamed.

The Vakragha, an ancient species that devours entire stars, are closing in on his homeworld. Their only weakness? The Tulari, a mythical stone that can heal the wounds they cut into space. But as Zahn races against time to find the stone, he uncovers a shocking truth: his mother’s disappearance is linked to the same enemy now threatening to destroy everything he loves.

Now, Zahn must make impossible choices—ones that could save his planet or doom it forever.

For fans of Star Wars, Ender’s Game, and other epic space adventures, THE TRUTH BEYOND THE SKY offers heart-pounding action, mind-bending twists, and a galaxy-spanning journey that will leave readers breathless.

Review

Praise for The Truth Beyond the Sky: "Definitely an amazing adventure for all. The descriptive scenes captivate the imagination and one truly feels a part of the story. 5-stars!" --AudiobookReviewer.com "A swift & compelling read. It's fun and I recommend it if you enjoy science fiction epics." --Michael Coorlim, Author of the classic steampunk series Galvanic Century "Readers of the Law of One books may find familiar the philosophical thread woven throughout. In my view, that makes this book a rare gem in the genre. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the underlying philosophy of the book, the mythos, shares much in common with the best of metaphysical literature." --Thomas Minderle, Author of Fringe Knowledge for Beginners "It was tough to look away. What's really interesting about this book is how multi-layered it is. Zahn's story manages to pull from the world around us, while also incorporating elements of mythology and hero epics. This is a coming of age story of the highest caliber." --Jessica Nottingham, Founder of HopelessBibliophile.com "I was immediately drawn in by the vivid descriptions at the beginning of the story. The author has a knack for fully immersing a reader into the hero's plight, and I felt like I was hurtling through corridors of light alongside Zahn." --Erica Lane, Founder of FantasyBookLane.com

From the Author

I wrote this book for you. You love Science Fiction, and you've immersed yourself in the worlds that Clarke, Asimov, O.S. Card, and Lucas created. You love action in your Sci-Fi, but you want meaning and humor, too. You want the characters to actually care about each other and act with their hearts as well as their heads. You want a story where the hero isn't a "chosen one" but instead chooses themselves, just like real life. I want that, too, which is why I wrote this series. As I said, this book is for you, and I hope you love it.

The first book in the Aravinda series is a fast moving romp with interesting characters who with the push of circumstances and the help of friends grow in knowledge and wisdom as the story progresses.

This is a great young reader's choice as well as a fun read for adults. The author has included a good vocabulary, a storyline that will hold your attention and he emphasizes good values by presenting good examples. Absolutely worth your time!

This was a very enjoyable light read that was quite difficult to put down; I found myself up until 2 AM a couple of nights. It is good science fiction which does not delve into heavy techie details of the objects that are beyond the technical abilities of the main character, Zahn. He is from a planet that does not have space travel yet, but is exploring the galaxy via telescopes. Zahn ends up aboard a downed spaceship as he becomes needed by its pilot for a grave mission of supreme importance. This leads him across the galaxy where he meets new friends and galactic enemies. As the author says about his writings, 'transcending' one's self is needed to be learned. This skill is the only way to get their message to the Council; an interesting twist you don't find in many stories of this genre which I found interesting.
I only gave it 4 stars because (1) as others have said, Zahn is unable to get many questions answered about the new tech he is encountering and using, and (2) even though I like that it was Not a "blood and guts" war-like story, things for the most part happened almost too easily. Only toward the end of the book do things gets a bit harrowing, but "extra help" saves the day.
I really do appreciate how polished this story is. I've read too many lately that not just had a lot of spelling errors, but poor grammar as well.
I am ready for a continuance. Thank you, Andrew M. Crusoe.

This book had an intriguing plot line, I was curious what happened to the main character's mother. However, it needs some serious editing as far as word choices and active vs. passive voice. Some descriptive words were over used, especially "crystalline," which appeared at least once on every page. The author spends more time telling than showing, which makes the book difficult to get into. There were also characters that I found annoying as a reader, but the other characters didn't seem bothered. That took away from the story as well. I'm more likely to accept an annoying character if the other characters found him annoying as well. In the end, I would say to the reader, "don't bother," and to the author, "this work shows promise, but you may want to run it past an editor again, revise it, and then rerelease it."
I didn't finish it, and also glad I got it as a freebie.

What can I say? This book was addictive and EXTREMELY fun to read. I personally do prefer a bit more background science in my sci-fi, but this just isn't that type of book -- and it didn't matter. The author built an intruiging world with very fun characters. It has a great mix of philosophical and science. It is 4:30am, so I apologize for the fragmented review.

It was just so enjoyable.

The only bad part of the book was that it ended. We need more installments as soon as possible!

An amusing and well written (although the author has a little problem with plurals) story. It does plod a tad bit at first but soon hits its stride and provides entertaining reading

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and I would listen to any audiobook that Jeff Hays has narrated in the past or will narrate in the future. He either used technology to help with the various voices or he is absolutely amazing at voices, even the female voices sounded like actual people and not caricatures like so often happens with opposite gender voices. I seriously cannot say enough good things about the narration for this book.

I believe this book is targeted to slightly younger than me science fiction fans, so it skips over detailed descriptions of exactly how the technology works, which I appreciate. Although some people will likely argue that the way that is done is a copout, I liked it and felt that it made perfect sense for the story, and it kept the story from feeling bogged down by descriptions that would likely have bored me to tears.

I felt like the story moved along at a fairly fast pace, but it didn't feel unrealistically fast if that makes any sense. There was quite a bit of action, but a fair amount of "down" time too, so it didn't feel like the characters were just being bombarded with one thing after another. I guess I could say it was well balanced.

Overall I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and the narration 7 out of 5 stars because it was that good. I definitely recommend this book to sci-fi fans and if you have any interest in audiobooks at all, spring for the audio. You won't regret it.
