Editorial Reviews
Review
While being engrossed in the drama that I was reading, it was still easy to enjoy the vivid descriptions of the beautiful city Acapulco. Often I felt that I was right there. I don't think I'll ever get to that part of the world, so for me Acapulco seen through the author's eyes was fascinating. I got to learn not only about the touristic aspect of the city, but also of the every day life, the problems people go through, the corruption and evil going around, and the way people like Emilia cope with all this and rise above it all with grace.
Overall Cliff Diver, while not the easiest read of all, is a wonderful crime mystery that keeps you fast flipping to the last page to see what's coming next. Of course I picked up the second book right after reading the first - afterall I wanted to see what happened with Emilia and Kurt, and where would she go after her first main adventure in Acapulco.-- Mystery Sequels
From the Author
When Felix Contreras, the host of NPR's ALT.Latino show asked me about the Emilia Cruz character, I told him that she represented hope. Despite Mexico's drug cartels and high murder rates, there are still good people fighting the good fight.
But as a female and a cop in Mexico, Detective Emilia Cruz lives in a pressure cooker. It's hard to know who she can trust and harder still to have a normal relationship when she's immersed for so much of the time in a stew of paranoia and danger.
It helps that Emilia is a good liar.
From the Back Cover
Emilia, the first and only female detective on the Acapulcopolice force, has no choice but to take on a case that reeks of corruption. Sheknows that the shadow of counterfeit ransom money stalks the blood-spatteredcrime scene. No witnesses but plenty of people with motive.
As she pieces together the victim's last hours, Emiliabecomes a pawn in an ugly game of corruption, money, and power being played by citypoliticians, the powerful police union, and her fellow detectives. Emilia will followher instincts but will she survive if she uncovers the truth?

Pros
The author is amazing at setting a scene. You feel as if you are literally dropped into wherever she’s writing about, with the sights and sounds and smells entering your mind.
Her main character is well-developed and multi-layered. She’s got her strengths and weaknesses. Unlike many fictional detectives, she doesn’t instinctively know everything.
Her writing moves relatively quickly. And her setting is unique. There are enough detective novels set in NYC, LA and the English countryside.
This book will (or at least should) open your mind to the fact that Mexico in general (and Acapulco in particular) is not full of the stereotypes North Americans hold. While reading, I Googled and was surprised to learn Acapulco has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
Cons
I’m surprised more reviews don’t point Amato’s mystery storyline is so confusing. I consider myself a well-read person, but I had a difficult time following it. She has numerous suspects and motives, and they change from chapter to chapter.
While her main character is well-drawn, her supporting characters...not so much. There are so many of them, and everything they do revolves completely around the main character. Amato even gave the main character’s mother borderline dementia so she can’t really have a fully formed life.
One final note: To the negative reviewers complaining the book has Spanish words in it: Did you happen to notice it is set in Mexico??
That's especially true, in my experience, when it comes to Mexico.
The simple fact is, most U.S. authors know little - or nothing - about Mexico, its history and culture, and they especially know almost nothing about how its criminal justice system works. As a result, their narratives - almost without fail - paint Mexican police as either corrupt or incompetent.
Neither stereotype is correct, just as it is incorrect to conclude that all U.S. cops are violent, racist bullies based upon the actions of a few.
Given my innate distrust of U.S. authors attempting to write murder mysteries set in Mexico, I picked up Carmen Amato's "Cliff Diver" with a certain degree of skepticism.
Turns out that skepticism was completely unwarranted.
In plain point of fact, "Cliff Diver" is a tightly written novel with believable - and authentic - characters written by an author who clearly understands the people and culture of Mexico in general and Acapulco in particular.
The story centers around the murder of a corrupt police lieutenant and the subsequent efforts to track down his killer by members of the homicide squad he once commanded. Just as often happens in the United States with many high-profile cases, the investigation is hampered by political interference and demands that it be solved quickly. It is also hampered, in this case, by the fact the police union has stepped in and promoted the most junior detective on the squad - and its only woman - to the position of acting lieutenant in charge of leading the investigation.
As you can imagine, that does not sit well with the more experienced male detectives on the squad.
The result is a wonderful story full of twists, turns, and red herrings that will keep readers guessing about the killer's identity and the reason for the dead lieutenant's murder.
In Detective Emilia Cruz, Amato has created a terrific heroine. Driven to "do the right thing" even when that seems almost impossible, Cruz did not seek the acting lieutenant's position. In fact, when it is offered to her she tries to turn it down knowing (a) that she lacks experience and (b) the effect her appointment will have on the other members of the squad. Once it is made clear to her that she must accept the temporary promotion, she sets about the difficult task of trying to bring the killer to justice despite the animosity of her colleagues.
Amato has a strong narrative voice and the ability to flesh out secondary characters making them more than the literary equivalent of mannequins. That's not easy to do and her ability to give life and depth to the secondary characters in "Cliff Diver" make this novel a real joy to read. She also has a nice touch when describing the scenes in this book, providing just enough detail to put readers in the moment without overdoing it. That is another major plus in my book.
The verdict: This is an excellent bit of storytelling by a writer who truly understands not only the people and culture of Mexico but also has a wonderful command of the storyteller's art.
What begins as a minor crime by a Mexican national quickly moves to murder, police corruption, and nearly every crime imaginable by the Mexican cartels.
The author nails the authenticity of the drugs wars, and at times fiction felt like reality.
Junior detective Cruz not only has her hands full with the murder of her boss, but she also has to deal with being the only woman in the detective squad and the endless micro-aggression from the men who don’t want her there, including her partner.
Emilia’s investigation uncovers more crimes than she expected, but instead of congratulations and support, she gets contempt from her coworkers and superiors for tarnishing the police department’s image and the city.
But that doesn’t stop her.
Acapulco is the exotic setting for this police procedural, and it’s juxtaposed against the poverty of the region, highlighting the disparity of status and class.
There is also a hint of romance for Emilia that could grow in through the series.
With a strong female lead and a well-developed plot—and great subplots—Cliff Diver is a suspenseful read that keeps you turning pages to solve a mystery and find at least one killer.
Looking forward to reading more in the Emilia Cruz series.
Enjoy!

If you read this novel, the first in a series, you will likely want to purchase more; I did.
As a Canadian, I don’t have enough knowledge of Mexican culture to assign any level of accuracy to the setting of this novel based on my previous reading. Given Carmen Amato’s creds in the author notes, It sounds like you can trust her to deliver the real thing. And it sure feels real to me.
You can get a plot outline in the book blurb. And it is a very good story. But Amelia sits solidly in the role of the central character, and she is what really makes the novel come together.
I got onto the work of Carmen Amato on the recommendation of an author whose emails I receive and read carefully. I wish I could remember his name. One day I will figure that out. Meanwhile, his recommendation was solid gold.

The difference is that Ms. Amato has chosen the perfect setting for her dramas. They take place in Acapulco, a border town in a developing country renowned for its corrupt officials, near useless bureaucracy, proliferation of drug lords, its downtrodden lower classes who suffer from brutal violence and a social system that features the downsides of trickle-down economics. Ms. Amato gives us a glimpse of real life on the other side of the barbed-wire fence. She doesn't need to resort to paranormal psychopaths. The evil bleeds into every street corner, every restaurant, every hotel, every government office.
Emilia Cruz, the hero and lead detective, faces an uphill battle from the word go. She has grown up in a poor barrio and joined the police force where she's spent years as a uniformed cop. A high score on proficiency test has given her the chance to become a city detective. But she's the junior officer in the department, which means she gets jobs that no one else wants. She can't even use the washroom in peace because the john is communal. It doesn't even have doors on the toilet stalls. She has to bring her own roll of toilet paper and then suffer embarrassment when the guys use the urinals and stare at her through the wall mirror.
In Acapulco (Mexico) everyone is underpaid. The easiest way to advance is to accept bribes from the drug lords. Hence, one-third of the public officials are on the take. In this motley environment, no one can trust anyone else. It makes for a very uneven and roughshod application of the laws. Emilia Cruz has her own case file of missing persons, mostly children and young teenagers. Other detectives won't touch these disappearances because they will likely lead to trouble with armed enforcers of the drug lords. It's better to leave sleeping dogs lie.
By pure chance Emilia stumbles onto an important case when she finds a huge stash of counterfeit US money in the false compartment of a luxury sedan. She also meets a handsome ex-marine (Kurt Ricker) who manages a plush resort catering to wealthy nortamericanos. Her involvement with Kurt is a kind of cultural shock where she steps from slum world to ultramodern and back.
Shortly after, the boss of Acapulco detectives is found dead. A shady character in the upper echelon of government decides to make Emilia the new head of detectives. She takes tons of abuse from the older, better qualified gumshoes. But Emilia proves everyone wrong when she turns the department around, rids it of unproductive kickbacks and gets doors installed in the communal toilet. She also manages to solve a major case and finds the killer of her former boss. There is more, but you'll have to buy the book.

A truly excellent mystery novel. The writing is classic with descriptions that allowed me to put myself in the streets of Mexico and the people living there...all without me ever setting foot in the country for real.
Many twist and turns and surprise encounters bring the reader along in the story. There is excitement, intrigue and pathos - along with enough humanity to bring the story to life and make it feel real.
A wonderful read by author Carmen Amato. Highly recommend.
