Fantastic book. I read this knowing very little about the Chinese market. It gave a great overview of the Chinese business environment and I am glad that I read it. This book is full of statistics, and although I'm not one for them, you can see that Swanson has really done his research. There were a few proofreading issues, but on the whole, it was an informative read.

A wonderful reference manual for China with balanced views.

Many years ago during the "early days" of a recent financial crisis (c-2007/8) we ran into Tim Swanson while working in Hong Kong and through Citibank. He was talking about Western society, looming bank dislocations, Asia, and of course specifically China.

We remained in touch and when we moved to China two years ago to open our Shanghai Office, I had the pleasure of meeting with Tim again. My had his experience grown.

Tim's work represents a very strong combination of real-life "feet on the ground" experience as well as the non-local experience gained through working in "ambassadorial" positions promoting Western compliance and a stronger legal framework. It is generally acknowledged that China should continue its efforts to develop this strong legal framework in order to create a more powerful footing from which to launch its next great phase of growth.

"Great Wall of Numbers" is a book to be read carefully, understanding that whenever someone talks about "impact" and at the same time is addressing a population pushing 1.4 billion people..... that sheer "walls of numbers" which for anyone else are a "majority" are in reality a "minority" (so per-capita counts) when placed against the extraordinary economic machine that remains The "People's Republic" of China.

America was once considered a Republic.

Doing business in or with China is very tricky and even very dangerous. Read this book before you think about developing a China strategy. This book will teach you the types of questions you need to ask before embarking on your China strategy and a very handy way of finding out the answers to those questions.

Excellent Resource on Business in China

I learned more about doing business in China from this book than all the other resources I have read. It is a highly readable book, with lots of anecdotes and hard facts. Plus it is loaded with insights that you will not find anywhere else. Buy it.
