This DVD player/writer is primarily designed to be portable and is best suited for notebooks and lap tops; however, there is no problem hooking it up to a desk top machine, and it comes with software for both PC's and Mac's, working with a whole array of Windows operating systems from Windows 8.1 on down.

This unit does not come with its own power cord, and a powered USB connection is required; it will not operate if plugged into a USB bank that is not powered. Plug it directly into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB bank, and you'll be good to go.

I needed a Portable DVD drive for a tablet and laptop that does not have one installed. You need to install the software that is provided. After installing the software it works without any problems. I have installed other software with out problems on a windows 8.1 operating systems.

I purchased this in March 2015 and it worked great until this month. Now it spins for 30 seconds and just gives up. I've tried it in 3 different computers and have swapped out cords. I really don't think it is designed for the long haul.
