“Chronicles III” is the third in a series of SHORT NOVELLAS based on the characters and concepts explored in “The Fourth Awakening" and “The Gathering Darkness.”

The goal of each Chronicle is to present an Enlightened “Archetype,” and explore its characteristics. While each Chronicle is a stand-alone episode that can be read independently, it is a part of a much larger and continuing story which is easier to understand and follow if it is read in sequential order.

In this episode, we learn the true identity of “Jacobin” and meet the formidable Agnes Finch Turnbull. Dr. Turnbull walked away from a tenured position at Harvard and started a controversial publishing empire focusing on books about enlightenment and personal development. She is also one of the most severe critics of the Hermes Project and wrote a scathing review of Penelope’s book, The Fourth Awakening, for the “New York Times.”

WHAT IS AN AWAKENING?

An awakening occurs when something so profoundly changes the world that all of the old rules no longer apply. A powerful new order arrives, completely unexpected and without warning, and things are never the same again.

The First Awakening occurred approximately 200,000 years ago when Homo sapiens emerged in East Africa, but it took another 150,000 years for things to begin to get interesting.

The Second Awakening saw the emergence of spoken language, early shamans, and great myths being told around the campfire. For the first time, early humans became self-aware and while still considering themselves a part of nature, they understood they were now different.

The Third Awakening began around 3,000 years ago. It saw the rise of all modern religions, as well as science. Between 800 BC and 400 BC, there was a religious explosion. The key events in the Old Testament occurred, from which emerged Judeo/Christian beliefs. At the same time Taoism was being followed by Confucianism in China. The same was happening with Shintoism in Japan, and Hinduism and Buddhism in India, and later Islam.

For the past 500 or so years, the political power of religion has waned while the power of science has flourished. With videos of Space Shuttles exploding on cable news, both sides politicizing environmental science to serve their personal agenda and “safe” nuclear power plants melting down, science is now in retreat. When the big ideas from the previous Awakening start to collapse, a new Awakening is on the horizon.

I read the books leading up to this and was very interested in the concepts presented. The writing in each of them is just okay. I was looking forward to this one as well, until they started using enlightenment as an excuse for bad behavior. I refused to continue reading when pedophelia was presented as just "the body wants what it wants." The concept of "I'm holy so I can do what I want with no consequences" is very familiar. This book contends that not keeping appointments (inconsideration for others' time), abandoning one's spouse and children, and all manner of douchebaggery is not just okay but preferred as long as one is enlightened. Sounds like the extremes of every other religion I know. I'm disappointed because I expected more from enlightenment.

If you're looking at this book, I'll assume you've at least read the previous two Chronicles, and probable TFA and TGD--all recommended reading. As short as these episodes are, they are offering an interesting look at "enlightenment" and what that term really means. In this episode, be prepared to be confronted with some differences between Eastern and Western views on the topic.

The more I read, the more I'm led to contemplate what it even means to be "enlightened", and to question if I would even know if I were already there. There's so much more to it than the imagery of a catatonic Buddhist monk sitting on the top of a mountain (which was roughly my impression before reading this series). Whether you're a serious student, someone exploring their spirituality, or just bored during a layover, this series is a must-read, as it won't leave you the same as it found you.

Chronicles III adds several delicious twits and turns to the Chronicles series. I thouroghly enjoyed it. Penelope, Ian and their mystical Indian companion return to Washington DC. They learn more about Jocbin, the apparently evil force that is kidnapping/recuriting Enlightened people. There are some sub plots to enjoy as well. Does Penelope still have feelings for Walker? Rod and Jeffery tell a tale with skill and humor creating a book that is a pleasure to read.

You could easily pick up Chronicles III and enjoy it (although it might be a bit short) on it's own. But if Amazon has suggested Chronicles III and you have not read the first two, get the set.

I have read all three Chronicles and this continues the story nicley. I can't wait for book IV.

An awakening I felt as a child, a path I explored as a young adult and left to the side to get on with life. I am revitalized now and so glad of it. This series does not just look at things in a dogmatic manner but with science and history to back up, which was the way I explored earlier. I am glad to have found Rod Pennington and Jeffery Martin, They are a great team, Jeffery with his research and Rod with his intuitive insight and the gifted art of translating the information and getting that message out with his artistic talent. I recommend their books highly, to the greater good of all, and self positive realization. Read, You will not regret.

These books tell a great continuous story. A story that is still in the making. Though written in a fictional platform, I believe that the experiences related during a personal "awakening" are very real and these stories are based on truth. I also believe that anyone, whether through meditation, during a traumatic experience or a sudden epiphany can have a similar experience.

When I am going to read one of Rod Pennington's books, I generally need to prepare as I would for a blizzard (which we are having today in MN - sort of) by clearing my calendar, stocking the refrigerator and turning off or ignoring my phone. I know I am in for an adventure and a stretching of my mind that will last. I am never the same person after one of his books. So, knowing the deadline was near for the Kindle drawing, I got everything totally prepared yesterday evening...started reading and suddenly I was done. WAIT..WAIT..IT'S OVER? NO...NO...NO!!! <sob> I can't do this again. Yes I can go back and reread all the books and novellas and get deeper into the meanings in the books and will probably do that. I can be an adult and say wise things, but all I want is another fix! Yes, I think this series is totally addicting. If you have not read the series, you need to start immediately. I was so glad to see familiar characters again - sort of like coming home. I was challenged and happy and laughed and scared and have continued to ponder the extension of the story. Keep it coming Rod and Jeffrey!

I read the 1st book in this series and decided that I was going to follow it to whatever turns out to be it's conclusion. So far each installment has kept me interested. The author spends a few pages trying to review the past installments and that to me seems to be a waste of space. I think they should just flat out tell the reader that has jumped in on this installment to go back and start at the beginning of the series.

The TFA series is a great tool to help obtain inner peace. This series is a great blend of eastern and western beliefs. These short stories are a great way to get information and break down the lessons that these authors want you to learn. I have reread The Fourth Awakening and The Gathering Darkness many times over and I am sure I will read these short stories as well. When reading this short story i laughed out loud, face palmed my forehead, and even thought "woot woot!" If you are considering reading this series, buy it right now and enjoy!!!
