2014-09-23 update: Firmware and software updates have fixed all the issues and my MobileLite(s) now work problem free. I really like this device and at the low current prices they're a steal, just bought two more, they're so handy to have around. Very portable and useful. Especially if you need to share files between multiple devices. I can access from 2-3 devices at once without any problems and stream video, play music, copy files, and so on. Access may seem hesitant as you navigate, now and then, but the streaming is fast and never buffers or lags. Even HD videos play well. See below, after the original review, for another update with tips, especially an easy way to access from windows which made this device much more useful to me. Have now raised my rating from 4 to 5 stars based on excellent features, performance, and value.Original review:----------------Ok, so this is a very well built and nicely designed bit of hardware that delivers what it promises. It is let down only by the mildly flaky MobileLite app (but it works well most of the time) and too brief documentation/instructions.The quick start guide is sufficient to get you going, but leaves many questions unanswered. Nevertheless, you can easily charge the device, pop in an SD card (or USB flash drive), download the Mobilite app and install it on your device (I used a Samsung Galaxy Player for this review) and in short order you will be accessing your content on your Mobile device or the MobileLite easily.When plugged into your laptop to charge, you can also access the storage (SD Card or USB) and copy content back and forth, view/play content and so on. So your basic USB storage device. Unplug and power it up and you have a portable wifi storage device. And as a little bonus, you can also use it as a backup power source for your phone or other USB chargeable device.I was able to play music, watch videos, and view photos from the MobileLite on my tablet using the app without any problems. The MobileLite app is OK, nothing great, but it gets the job done.I was also able to access the MobileLite from my laptop via Wifi (look for the "MobileLite" network). I have not tried the internet pass-through yet, but will. It is an attractive, light, very portable device which will allow your phones, tablets, and other devices to access the SD card or USB memory you can insert into the device. Good for 'off the cuff" content and for sharing content with multiple devices. For the relatively low price, I think it's a good value if you need a portable wifi storage device.Update: Dropped this about 3 feet onto a hard tile floor and it survived without a scratch and works fine still. I am posting a screen shot showing how it appears in Windows 7 (Pro) under "Network" -- very easy to access, and Media Player will handle it fine. You can also access the contents of the SD, USB, or whatever directly of course. Music, Photos, Videos all play well, no issues at all. Can play mp3's while watching a photo slideshow and so on. Performance seems fine.Very nice for the price!-------------------------------------------------------2014-09-24 update -- TIPS (things I've learned and found useful):From a Windows PC you can access the MobileLite storage via a browser (read only) using 192.168.200.254 - great for streaming videos, viewing photos or playing music - and you can also access settings for the device.Even better, for read/write access via PC "Network" - open Windows Explorer, click on "Network" - then click to right of "Network>" in the address bar and type "\\mobilelite" and press [Enter] and it will mount mobilelite as a network (Samba) share. Now you can move, copy, delete using the explorer window as usual (if you close the window, you have to do this again). You can also create a desktop shortcut to "\\mobilelite" and access using that (easier). (Took me some time to figure this out. I can't understand why Kingston does not include these instructions.)Also note that the MobileLite will always be automatically listed as a media server under "Network" and Windows Media Player will access it automatically to play music and videos.

I could not ask for anything more. The Following are all postive features of this device:

It acts as an emergency charger for portable devices. For those who have left a less than favorable review because of the battery charging capabilities please consider updating your review. This is a feature that Kingston did not have to add and the device would have been just as good. What is sad is that reviewers are taking off a star for the lower mah capacity of the battery for external charging without considering although buying a emergency charger is going to be $30-$40 anyway. I only paid $60 for this device so removing a star because the capacity of the battery may not adequately or fully charge a 5" or larger screen mobile device is not fair IMO. Also don't forget that you can still use a portable battery with multiple USB ports to charge both the MobileLite and other electronic device, or a portable battery with one USB port for charging which will allow you to plug in your MobileLite, and then your electronic device can charge using the MobileLite USB port. Just remember that if you use the USB port for charging then you will not be to use the USB port for USB data connection at the same time.

The owner of the device can offload and transfer content from there technology devices while in remote locations or on vacation.

The device works with memory card readers, YES I HAVE TRIED THIS, which means that you are not limited to just SD card compatibility, but you can use basically any type of memory card but not all at the same time. If you have a SD card, insert, and read and then if you then want to read lets say a Sony MS card remove the SD card and insert the MS card, no problem. I have a memory card reader with SD, MMC, Sony MS, etc and the kingston passed the test with flying colors. and you can still use the regular SD card slot on the device at the same time as occupying the USB port on the device. I have not tried the Micro USB port at the same time which will be my next test.

You are able to use the Kingston as a bridge device, which means that if you are using a mobile Hotspot or if you are at a hotel that charge for Wifi per device then all your devices will be viewed as one device when going through the MobileLite. No per device hotel Wifi charge will apply.

I cannot say enough positive things about this device it is simply awesome and worthy of 5 stars. I am using the device on iOS and Android and have had no issues.

If there were Three things that I would wish for it would be:

A small case for the device and the SD card adapter
That the iOS app works with older Firmwares prior to v5.1. I have an iPod touch at firmware 4.3 and cannot not use the Mobilelite APP without first updating the iTouch's firmware
A default password should be defined on the unit during manufacturing, which would be the same practices that manufactures use for other wireless protocols such as bluetooth, or WiFi routers

The one thing that I have noticed is that the Power button can be a bit difficult to operate since it does nto sit flush with the case and is rather small. for large fingers.

Other reviewers have complained about the lack of documentation, and I'm not going to argue that this a valid complaint for them. However for me getting this unit up and running is a no brainer. Charge the unit, download the iOS app or Android app, connect to the unit, set a password if needed, and start enjoying your content. This is what the instruction sheet states and also when downloading the iOS or Android app this is the first thing that is displayed to the user before they even presented with the apps GUI.

This is a great product that should be in more stores. I went to Staples who was supposed to be one of the re-salers and they had no idea what I was talking about and the item was not found in my staples here in the Sacramento, Ca area.

The MobileLite has two key functions:
1. A wireless reader of SD cards or USB flash drives
2. A power bank to recharge a mobile device

As a power bank it is limited - the product data sheet mentions 1800mAh battery, which when fully charged, would suffice to fully charge an iPhone or iPod Touch, but not iPads, SGS3, SGS4 and most other high-end smartphones. So I personally wouldn't buy it for its power bank capabilities, but it is nice addition to a wireless reader if you need one.

As a wireless storage device, it is similar to Kingston's WiDrive product, but instead of the embedded memory in the WiDrive, the MobileLite comes with SD card slot, USB 2.0 interface and no memory. As such it leaves the consumer the freedom to use existing memory cards/usb drives, with the SD card slot especially useful for inserting the card from your digital camera and sharing photos via your mobile device without the need to carry with you a laptop...

To get going you simply download the app, go to the wireless settings of your mobile device and connect to the WiFi network the MobileLite is creating when turned on, and that's it. You would be able to browse content loaded to an SD card or a USB flash drive inserted to the reader.
It takes the MobileLite about 30 seconds to get up and running - a pretty long time for a flash based device.

The MobileLite is about the size of iPhone 5, but twice as thick. It has a clean design and is surprising light-weight. In the box you will find the reader, a USB cable, an SD-microSD card adapter and the quick start guide. It has 3 LEDs indicating battery status, wifi access (middle blue), and internet access (side blue). A different Internet LED could be helpful as from a short distance I may not be able to tell which of the two blue LEDs are on and what it means...

SD Card:
The MobileLite supports SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. This means it supports ExFAT, so if you would like to load it with files larger than 4GB (think full length HD movies) or simply use high capacity cards (anything higher than 32GB) this feature would come handy. I was experimenting with it with a 64GB SanDisk Extreme Pro card and could access content on it with ease.

The USB 2.0 receptacle works with USB 2.0 or 3.0 flash drives, so no problems here.

Mobile Apps:
To fully enjoy this reader you'd like to use the native iOS or Android apps.
Unfortunately, it seems Kindle app is not available for this product.

I accessed the MobileLite with iPhone 4, SGS2 and my laptop (at the same time). I viewed photos, streamed videos and listened to music so it can be used as a memory expansion device to memory-challenged devices where you could put a few full length movies and thousands of songs (depending on card or USB you plug in) for a long trip. The manufacturer claims up to 5 hours of operation, but I haven't got the chance to check how long it would stream continuously.
You can also offload photos from your iPhone (Camera Roll) or Android (Gallery) if you are running out of storage on your mobile device.

The apps shows content on the drive in two ways side by side - as files and by media type (Photos, Videos and Music).
While mostly stable, I found the file/folders order on iPhone confusing and the both apps have some quirks I hope Kingston will fix quickly (photos and music I downloaded from the reader to my iPhone don't show in the Files view, only in the corresponding media tabs, content in media tabs is not searchable in the Android app etc.).
You can download files from the reader to your mobile device for later access (though if you will buy this product to offload content from your mobile device you are less likely to use this feature).
In the Settings menu you can check the status of the device battery, password protect your reader, rename the wireless network it creates.
You can and should protect your MobileLite wireless network unless you'd like anyone in the wifi range of the device to be able to access your content. Password protection is available from the apps' settings menu and is as easy as it is on your home router. The Settings option to make the network invisible also helps preventing incidental access to an unprotected wireless network.

The MobileLite features "internet pass through" - basically allowing you to maintain internet connectivity (receiving emails, browsing the internet) while connected to the drive. When doing so, you would see the reader's IP address under the device name in the application home screen.

You can also access the reader via any web browser without a native app, but the functionality is much more limited.
The MobileLite allows playing iTunes purchased content (by devices authorized to access this content), but only music will play directly from inside the app. To play Movies or TV shows you MUST browse the reader from Safari (typing the drives [...]

Documentation could be improved. The quick start guide is targeting iOS users and there is no User Manual for Android users at all. Also, the user manual and quick start guide provide conflicting descriptions regarding battery status (the manual says red means less than 50%, while the quick start guide says it is means less than 25%).

Pros:
1. ExFAT support and its expandable storage interfaces (think of 128GB SD card + additional capacity on a USB if you really need more) makes it a good candidate as a movies-stash on the go.
2. If you already have such a device - being able to using it as a power bank is nice.
3. iTunes content is generally supported.

Cons:
1. At a price of $70 with no memory, if you consider it as a memory expansion device - you should consider buying other products (Kingston's own 32GB WiDrive for example is cheaper than this reader...).
2. To access iTunes videos and TV shows - you would need to browse the drive via Safari.
3. As a power bank - it's really limited.
4. No Kindle Fire app.
5. No user manual for Android.

This device does its job well and it is certainly worth 5 stars especially at the discounted price.
It is a little bigger than Ideal but still very portable.

Basically it does three things:

1. It is a secure mini-router that also makes available to all networked devices any content of the inserted media namely a USB pens and an SD card. The latter is flushed and does not show once inserted. The network connection is quite fast and document or media files can be cut, pasted, opened, or streamed. A micro-SD to SD card adapter is also provided.

2. It is also a tunneling device which connects to a home router or a WiFi thethering mobile device and makes available such Internet connection to all devices networked.

3. Finally it is a USB back up battery charger for mobile devices. A short USB to to micro USB cable is provided for charging (and for being recharged)

Android and IOS devices can also download an application that makes it even more intuitive to use. However only three devices can connect this way. Else the number of devices networked is larger. I am not sure how many devices can connect at maximum but I used it with a iMac, Windows, Linux PC, Android Tablet and mobile phones with at least four or five devices connected in different ways.

I was also curious to see if could help with the considerable price premium for extra local storage imposed by some mobile devices (such as iPad air 2 with 16 vs 64 GB for instance). I think the answer is yes and no.

Yes because it does work. But the extra memory is much slower and the device is rather big. Considering also the overall cost especially including a extra 64 GB SDcard I am not sure it is worth doing this for someone who need the extra local storage and the full performance most of the time.

However as a way to take the personal movies, photographs etc and share it with the family on holiday and travelling it is definitely a brilliant idea.

A pesar de las criticas no esperaba mucho del producto. Vino con un adaptador de microsd.
La verdad que me ha sorprendido. Le he conectado un disco duro de 1Tb que tiene 3 particiones: 400gb en formato wbfs para juegos de la wii, 500 gb para peliculas (solo ocupados 300gb) y el resto de gb para fotos, documentos.. que solo hay ocupado 50gb. Ademas tenia una sd de 32 gb que la llene para probar y lo ha cargado todo muy rapido.
La mayoria de las peliculas son en .avi y la reproduci con la app gratuita de VLC, algunas se ven si problemas pero otras se ven pero el audio no es compatible, no se si con la app de Nplayer de pago se solucionara. Tampoco lo quiero para peliculas asi que no me importa de momento mucho.
Reproduci peliculas en dos dispositivos a la vez y sin problemas ni cortes...
El unico y mayor problema es la bateria, que o no la cargue entera o dura muy poco, creo que el mobilelite 2 le dura mas la bateria, pero como tenia mejores criticas este fue por el que me decidi (a parte de ser mas economico y que no esperaba gran cosa de el)
Si lo conectas al dispositivo lo carga.
Copie fotos del ipad a la sd, y no perdieron calidad, ni tamaño ni nada. Copie fotos de la sd al ipad y perfecto.
Realmente lo compre para mi madre, que no maneja el ordenador y este aparato le ayudara a poder liberar espacio de su ipad y seguir teniendo sus cosas a mano para poder verlas cuando quiera.
¿Lo volveria a comprar? Solo decir que este año ya se que voy a regalar en los cumpleaños.
¿que es lo que no me gusta? no haber sabido antes de su existencia.. aunque claro hasta que no lo necesitas no lo buscas :D

Volvi a comprar el producto, me desespere desde el principio, no era capaz de hacer nada. Termine hablando con amazon que me recomendo un reemplazo del producto.
Al dia siguiente tenia uno nuevo en casa funcionando perfectamente.
Lo que me pasaba era que conectaba el wifi y cuando iba a la aplicacion ya se habia desconectado. En algun sitio lei que era por culpa de la aplicacion, y como hace poco se me actualizo llegue a pensar que era por eso. Al final la app no tiene culpa ninguna.
