Don't let the Cupcakes and Trinkets part fool you

I enjoy reading books with similar titles to this (which, I presume, is why it was recommended for me). This book, though, although well written with much too thorough descriptions, was too high on the gory meter for me. I gave it 3 stars because, although it isn't my style, I cannot in good conscience be totally negative about it and call myself an honest reviewer.

If you enjoy witchy fiction with shifters, folks being torn apart, etc, you'll enjoy this. If you aren't into the violence as much, skip this series. At any rate, for the price (free), if you are on the fence about it, go on and try it! (If you are squeamish, do not read it to go to sleep on,... just sayin'!!!!).

Personally, I'll stick with Tegan Maher.

PROS: well written, excellent descriptions, grammar/syntax/spelling A-ok

CONS: graphic violence, description of beings ripped up, etc; and if you missed it, witchcraft, but if you are put off by that you shouldn't be shopping this section of literature anyway :)

SUMMARY: While I won't be buying any more of these because it's not my cuppa tea, I know folks who will enjoy this series. Unfortunately, (or fortunately), I am NOT one of them. I'll stick with my Seashells, Spells and Caramels.

My Excuse Is This Was A Freebie

So I decided to pick up something different, not knowing what I'd get. This is a urban paranormal with witches, wolf shifters, vampires, and the like. The focus is on Jade, a gorgeous but dumb blonde that is half witch and . . . human. Or so she was told. I'm leaning toward angel. . . Anyway, she bakes and bakes, works, and barely sleeps. Her magical ability. at least so far, is she attracts those with magic to her. Like the pied piper without music.

Murders are happening and a vampire is sent to check out Jade, prove whether she's guilty or innocent. There had to be a link to get him so close.. So. My problem with this story is the characters. Her foster sister Sienna is progressively going evil and Jade doesn't notice a thing. Admittedly Sienna is gone a lot and Jade works long hours, but the signs are all there, especially the belittling comments, bullying, selfishness, and lack of respect. So Jade is this clueless too trusting blonde bimbo. She is characterized as judging those around her by what they are and not really looking deeper.

Then we have Sienna's tired and washed out boyfriend. You'd think there'd be some concern, some consideration, even a visit to his parents after he was gone, but no. Again, Jade judged him by his parentage and ran with it, blowing her perception all out of proportion. There is no concern, no love, he was a tool for Sienna, a scapegoat, an excuse, and . . . I don't want my main characters to act like that. Both sisters had no moral compass. Jade was right up there with scrubbing her hands of the whole situation, no sense of loss, let's someone else clean up the mess, just shoves it under the rug, and looks to her next guy to see what he brings to the table. Really? She showed more concern over her baking hours and cupcakes than she did about people. Her sorrow over losing a possible date was forgotten so quickly. Sorry, I can't connect with a main character that presents herself so badly.

There were also some glaring plot holes like how Sienna was able to capture two very powerful paranormal men. How'd she do it? Nothing was said. So I'm left guessing. They had to have solved the case, they knew, but they were too polite to clue Jade in on Sienna's evil. Who does that? Don't you warn someone when their life's in danger? And when it is, you let someone bleed out in front of your eyes and have a calm conversation? What? No. Just no. My break from my normal reading patterns was a bad decision. Thankfully this was a freebie and soon to be deleted. - Dan's Wife

Cupcakes, Trinkets, And Other Deadly Magic is a bit like Practical Magic (the movie) meets True Blood (the TV show) – but with more cupcakes and less hanky-panky.

Jade Godfrey is a twenty-three-year-old, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, eye-catching cupcake bakery owner and half-witch. She lives a comfortable quiet life in Vancouver with her Gran, who’s a powerful and respected witch, and her feisty foster sister Sienna, who’s a half-witch like Jade. She spends her days blissfully insulated in her own little world, baking cupcakes and crafting trinkets out of found magical bits and bobs in her craft room – unitl the day her bubble bursts and a chillingly attractive vampire comes sniffing around her bakery and home. Things just go from bad to worse when werewolves show up, including a grumpily handsome Alpha, and Jade learns that she’s somehow dead center (pardon the pun) in a gruesome murder investigation. With her Gran inconveniently out of town, Jade has no choice but to get involved and take care of things herself – something she’s definitely not equipped for or used to thanks to her extremely sheltered upbringing.

I’m going to be honest, Jade was a bit too Mary Sue for my taste in some parts – every guy wants a piece of her, which she attributes to magic being attracted to her, as she is to it, but even handsome lawyers and random bus drivers can’t help but smile her way and can’t keep their eyes off her. She’s also extremely sheltered and can’t recall information that seems like it would be pretty crucial for a magical person to have – she knows almosts nothing about vampires or werewolves and has to look them up in her Gran’s books, and then she forgets some of what she read when she tries to remember it later. Honey, you can be pretty, powerful, and smart and still be cute – I promise. Still, she had her moments and was still a pretty likable character – especially with her cupcake obsession. Jade is always thinking about cupcakes, is always craving cupcakes, and always wants to give other people cupcakes.

The plot was interesting and unique, but I kind of guessed what was in the works early on, and felt like Jade should have figured it out earlier as well, but she has this whole self-acknowledged willful ignorance thing going on for her that seems to be practically her brand. But it’s an interesting world the author builds and I eagerly followed it until the end.

My absolute favorite parts of Cupcakes, Trinkets, And Other Deadly Magic were the interactions between clever, sarcastic vampire Kett, the Grand Conclave Investigator, and serious, grouchy Desmond, Lord and Alpha of the West Coast North American Pack, as they worked, begrudgingly, on the werewolf murder investigation together. I would absolutely read a buddy cop series with those two in it. There wasn’t really any romance between Jade and Kett or Desmond beyond some moments of physical attraction – I just hope the series isn’t building towards the dreaded triangle-of-death.

All in all, I enjoyed this book, especially for the price, and the storyline kind of has me hooked. Although I was getting Mary Sue vibes from the main character, Jade was still likable and the other characters really stole the show, enough that I’ll probably read the next book in the series.

I will say, that as fun as this cover is, it does a disservice to the book, as while there is a good dose of cupcakes, the story is (thankfully) not all light and fluffy and I really enjoyed it. Jade was an instantly likeable character, kept in the dark about her family and their true nature. However once the vampires and the shifters come calling, a cosy life is over and Jade must step up and discover what she is capable of. With magic, mayhem, a gruesome murder here and there (see what I mean about not all leith and fluffy?), this was great fun and an enjoyable read.

There are no errors that I can recall
The characterisation is good, more than enough to allow the reader to form a connection, oddly enough the emotional connection to Hudson was stronger than other characters.
The plotline is a bit slow, with some obvious red flags, but it's a supernatural novel so suspending belief is a pre requisite.
For me there isn't enough answers to urge me to purchase the next book in the series, we are starting the next book with no more understanding than the start of the first.
The characters are enticing, but not enough at present for me to purchase the series, maybe at some point in the future.
There is a little swearing and no sex scenes although the authors description of the dance scene with Hudson has to be one of the most erotic dance scenes I've ever read.
I really like the authors writing style so I will probably put future purchase on my definitely maybe list.

All my favourite paranormal creatures thrown together with cupcakes – what fun to be had! Goes down as another off my 2015 Reading Challenge – A book with magic. This one definitely has its fair share of magic.

Intricate story involving a lot of characters that all seem to radiate towards Jade. She draws people to her no matter who or ‘what’ they are. This story is about her finding herself, and trying to not always hide behind her grandmother and mother.

Jade knows about magic but has always thought that she didn’t carry much within her. They only thing she thinks she can do is make amazing cupcakes (with quite interesting names!) and draw magic to her, or more to the point magical beings. When they are around she can almost feed off their energy, which makes her feel alive. Her life has always been about following the rules (unlike her wayward sister) but when a vampire turns up at her cupcake shop they seem to get thrown out the window. He brings with him his own troubles. When he insists that he is there to see if she is the one that has something to do with the recent bought of murders she can’t help but think that she has stepped into the twilight zone. This is a story that consists of a very interesting mix of witches, werewolves and a vampire. Put them all together with some murders thrown into the mix to solve and you have yourself a party.

You are practically begging Jade to get with at least one of the hotties that have crossed her path though throughout the book (my monies on the vampire later in the series). There are some very fine specimens to choose from – even if they might scare her a little at first. You have a vampire, werewolf, werecat or the human lawyer to choose from. So tell me, who would you think is the most tempting or scary?

Some parts of the story are a bit predicable and the ending is seen a mile off but I was still drawn into the world that has been created. I am intrigued to see how Jade will grow into a much more confident and assertive woman now she knows that truth about who she is and what she is really capable of.

Readable enough fluff, though I did find myself worrying a lot about the poor woman's diet as she eats nothing but chocolate until book 6. And she eats a LOT of chocolate. Which doesn't stop her being irrisistible to multiple immortals, good with a sword etc. On the plus side, she does have a few emotional challenges, which is nice and, to my mind makes this series decent in its genre.

It's fluff. But as fluff goes, it's good fluff. Helps if you like chocolate and don't worry about nutrition. I don't and I do.

I totally loved this book, but I nearly gave up on it right at the start because of the use of the past tense to describe situations that are ongoing, which I find really annoying. For example "I also had my mother's eyes..." which has me asking "Have you got someone else's eyes now, then?" and brings mental images of keeping eyes in glass jars...
However, I decided to keep going and either there were fewer similar errors later in the book or I became less sensitive to them.
I love a bit of fantasy and this is cheerful and upbeat with a sassy heroine and a lot of cupcakes. If you can manage not to be too pedantic about grammar, I totally recommend reading it.
