Product Description

AUDIOENGINE IS AN INDEPENDENT SPEAKER COMPANY BASED IN AUSTIN, TX.

In 2005 Audioengine was founded with a simple goal: Build a speaker that sounds great, is easy to set up and use, and that makes people want to listen to music every day.

Audioengine’s core products are powered speakers; all-in-one music systems which allow you to connect all your devices wirelessly (or wired) for great stereo sound. They started with just one powered speaker, the A5; simple and beautiful, yet versatile enough to be used in your workspace as computer speakers, on stands in your living room, or in a home theater setup.

But the Audioengine team wanted to offer even more for their customers. After years of hard work, the versatility of their products was pushed even further by offering a number of add-on audio products that can be used with existing music systems.

Their passion is to help people hear all their favorite songs as they were meant to be heard and to discover new music and appreciate it with the highest sound quality. And they’re doing exactly what they had planned, which is to change the way people listen to music. Audioengine is now proud to offer a complete line of products that bring the sound quality of professional studio monitors right into your living room, without the inconvenience of multi-device stereo receivers or big clunky passive speakers.

Audioengine A2+

THE MUST-HAVE DESKTOP EXPERIENCE

The Audioengine A2+ Powered Speakers are the reference standard for computer audio and these small but high-performance speakers are the perfect upgrade for all your music.

Everyone knows the difference between custom-built, small batch products and the general disappointment of mass-produced products. The A2+ was designed and is hand-built with the goal of exceeding expectations of both value and performance. These small desktop speakers really pack a punch, making them the go-to system for desktop setups and smaller-room audio.

The A2+ Powered Speakers have amassed a vast collection of awards from the likes of WIRED, Sound & Vision, Gizmodo, The Absolute Sound, PCMag, and many others.

AUDIOENGINE A2+ DESKTOP SPEAKERS

Clear, full and powerful audio ideal for your desktop and smaller rooms. The A2+ Desktop Speakers are constructed with custom Audioengine components: aramid fiber woofers, silk tweeters, and built-in power amps wrapped in precision tuned, hand-crafted cabinets. The bass was teased from the A2+ with some clever acoustic and electrical design without using any digital signal processing or fake bass boost circuits. To say the bass on the A2+ is substantial for their size may be an understatement, but you be the judge.

"These lofty audio chops easily make the A2+ one of the best desktop audio solutions available in its low cost range…"

Crazy good speakers
5 out of 5 stars
Crazy good speakers
I've gone from a dedicated listening room (yes, that sounds as pretentious as "audiophile," which, unfortunately, I was) to a computer desk in a condominium. That is, I've retired. These are great little speakers; I won't repeat everyone's ravings. A few things, however. First and foremost, they are small speakers, meaning the stage you get (playing them about 3-4 feet from you) is also really small. And that stage is okay, but not great...instruments that are hard panned to the left or right come out of the left or right speaker, and fail to "float" at all, which may be a product of having them so close to you...maybe a better DAC would help (they use a TI/Burr Brown PCM2704C Input bit depth: up to 16 bits native; Input sample rate: up to 48KHz native). Although, I thought personally the DAC was better than an outboard Dragonfly. And I really, really don't think that their "speaker stands"...which face the speaker upwards..can be very good at all. The tweeters should be ear height, speakers straight on. I got some 3" PVC plumbing pipe from Home Depot with some endcaps, painted them and filled them with sand, put poster putty under the speaks. I got out of it for under $30. It really is a different speaker than I bought. There is a rock-stable center image now. These have outputs to go to a subwoofer...actually, to two subwoofers, which is a nice feature, not found on a lot of AV equipment. Many sources "sum" the bass output and let you have only one cable to one subwoofer. Yes, these need a subwoofer. Of course they do. They only go to about 65Hz, and don't try to be a two-channel answer (like, say, Vanatoo). I don't understand not playing bass. It's part of the music. Why not just rip out the trumpet section, or the flute section? I'll get off my soapbox, but highly recommend these be used with a subwoofer. They integrate well. Also, I recommend a modest upgrade to a PYST USB cord if you're hooking it up that way. Way better than the one that comes with. I also recommend use of at least one Audio Quest Jitterbug. If you're using them as true computer speakers, you need to clean up the USB signal it generates...you simply won't believe what these speakers can sound like if they are pampered a little.Computer audio, I must admit, is fun. I mean, I spent more for a Furutech duplex wall outlet than I did for all the things I mentioned above...including the speakers!! I was one who struggled through the 80's and 90's with bad CD playback through $2,000 CD players, and I just shake my head now when I open a music file. Some are not enamored of the A2+'s frequency response, saying there is a low spot around 4kH. If you're interested, you can go to: [...] although I've not tried it and there are no guarantees.Great fun for not a lotta dough.

I'm very pleased with these speakers. While I'm not an audiophile, I'm a musician and want to hear good quality sound out of my speakers. I listen mainly to classical as I work at my home office desk. For the past 5 years or so, I've used Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 (two desktop speakers about the same size as the A2+, and a subwoofer), which I've been happy with but decided to try an upgrade. I'd had my eye on these Audioengine speakers for a while, as they seem to get very favorable reviews. My conclusion as that those reviews are justified.

As somewhat of a side reference, a year or so ago I found a set of Bose Companion 5 speakers at a good price, and gave them a try. Hooked them up, and my first impression was that they sounded good, but empty in the middle. Sure enough, when I A/B'd them against the ProMedia 2.1's, it was no contest... the Klipsch speakers had a full midrange, while the Bose was all highs and lows with a big hole in the middle. They were (to my ears) very nice highs and lows, but I was missing a lot of the musical content. So, despite the very attractive and compact satellite speakers that Bose offered, I sold them.

The Audioengine A2+ was, to a lesser extent, the same experience vs. the ProMedia 2.1s, but in reverse... A/Bing the two sets, the Audioengine speakers sounded noticeably fuller, but still very clear and articulate. That said, the Klipsch speakers still sounded great, and I would have been happy keeping them.

One caveat, I personally feel that the A2+ speakers need a subwoofer. Again, I listen to classical, not bass-heavy rap, etc., and though I'm not into thundering, booming, room-shaking bass that is pumped up so much that it displaces everything else, I still like a very solid low end (double-basses, tympani, etc.)... I want just a slight hint of "feeling" these low instruments, not just hearing that they are there. The
Orb Audio subMINI  was what I went with, and I think was a good choice... it's one of the smallest subs sold on Amazon, but for my purposes (just solidifying the low end) it was perfect.

I'm using the built-in USB DAC, connected to my cylindrical Mac Pro. Another reviewer mentioned encountering some random clicks during listening, but so far I have not (I first had the speakers connected to the USB port on my 30" Apple Cinema Display, and then later connected it to a basic USB 2.0 hub... both configurations worked fine for me, though I did not try connecting directly to the Mac).

For me, one very useful feature is being able to simultaneously use multiple inputs, as the same set of speakers needs to provide audio both from the computer and from the wall-mounted TV. I did experience a noticeable hum when both were connected (as was the case with the ProMedias too, so it's a ground loop problem with my setup, not the speakers). This
Ground Loop Noise Isolator  on the TV connection inexpensively and easily fixed the problem.

Update 2/4/16: I did get a few surprisingly loud pops when I restarted my computer (again, the speakers are connected via USB)... need to remember to shut off the speakers before restarting next time.

OK, I don't even have 10 hours on these yet so they're no where near broken in but I have heard enough already to form an initial opinion. Skipping all the audiophile review speak, I just will say overall these things are friggin' spectacular. I work from home in front of my computer all day and was tired of the awful sound I was getting out of my "$50 big box store 2 way computer speakers". So I decided to give these a whirl based on excellent reviews. These are plugged into a USB2.0 port on a very generic (read: cheap) Dell home PC tower. Speakers are flanking my monitor on my desktop, approximately 18" apart

Ease of use and setup? Plug into USB jack, plug power cord into wall, use supplied cable and binding posts per the included setup sheet. Doesn't get much better or easier than that. Takes 10 minutes or less. Win8 will configure itself eventually and you can control the volume via keyboard volume controls. I haven't tried them on my Mac Book Air yet (Yosemite). Build quality is really good. The speaker wire you get is actual speaker wire and heftier than what other manufacturers include. There are microfiber bags holding everything. They came triple boxed from Amazon. You get the idea.

Sound. Tight, accurate and very good. They are not bloated or colored sounding - you hear the music. All of its nuances, glitches or glories - whichever it may be. Highs and mids are excellent. Bass is amazingly good for 2.75" drivers and a very small enclosure. These would probably integrate well with a sub (either Audioengine's own S8 or something else). However, in my "computer speaker/nearfield monitor" application it is not something I feel the need to add right now. Bypassing the onboard DAC (digital to analog convertor) and cheap audio out jack on my PC probably gets most of the credit for the amazing increase in sound quality, the rest goes to Audioengine for excellent design and construction. If you're listening to a low end, consumer grade "computer speaker" 2.1 setup then there is just an entirely new world waiting for you from an audio perspective. From the crappiest 128 kps mp3 file on my hard drive to the pristine, hi-res 96/24 stuff, everything sounds worlds different. Cleaned up. Exposed. If the recording is good, it will shine and just jump out of these. If it's a lousy recording to begin with then you'll hear how awful it really can be.

If you're looking for "computer speakers" there are a lot of other less expensive options out there. But for $249 these A2+ units offer an outstanding sounding all-in-one solution that fits on anyone's computer desktop I'm sure. True audiophile grade sound for not too much $$$. Take the savings and go splurge on some really great high resolution albums then enjoy the music. An absolute no brainer for me and I'm very glad I purchased!

Let me give you some perspective. a few months ago, I had 2 Sonos ones paired in stereo. Admittedly, this was a very good little system, but I still ended selling them. I now have 1 Amazon Echo dot 3rd generation hooked up via a premium auxiliary cable to my 2 new Audio Engine A2+, connected via an excellent Monoprice speaker wire (I indeed didn't bother with the provided cables that came with the speakers, except the power cable of course). This is a noticeable better setup for a number of reasons, the most important one being improved sound quality, all that for not much more than half the price of the Sonos. As far as I'm concerned, this is a no-brainer. And I should add, I've only had these new speakers for about a week, so once the speakers are broken in, they should sound even a bit better! I get all giggly just thinking about it. And by the way, there is no hissing sound at all when the speakers are idle. Now the only thing that remains to be seen is whether they are durable. As far as I understand, they are covered by 3 years warranty, which in my opinion is a good sign. The company clearly trusts that their product will last at least that long without problems. The odds are in my favor, I'd say. Anyway, this is great value in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars First impressions
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2014
"Be the first to review" I was urged, so here it is,hot off the press. My normal listening is via headphones, but I thought I would like some music to fill the pad while there's nobody around to complain. I was going to buy the A2's, but saw there was an improved model, and so I chose these, despite there being no customer feedback, bit of a risk. They were shipped out quickly from Amazon at little cost to Hungary, quite impressed by that. Also highly impressed by the packaging and accessories, all the wires and connections, rapid set-up. The speakers are very chunky and neat, creating a modest yet commanding presence on your desktop. They are very versatile: you can run them straight from your laptop via USB as they have a built-in DAC, or from your iPhone, Walkman or separate pre-amp through a 3.5mm lead. I rigged them up to run from my HeadRoom Mini DAC/pre-amp combo, with output to powered speakers. First impressions - Jazz and Rock - that was Dexter Gordon "Our Man in Paris" and Lila Downes "Shake Away" produced the big Wow! factor, and I thought I was onto something good. But things got a bit more critical listening to orchestral music. Sweet treble and agreeable middle, giving beautiful sound to strings, woodwind and piano; but it was getting a bit fuzzy and coloured down below, hopefully that will improve as the speakers burn in. I tried using the inbuilt DAC and the USB connection instead, but the HeadRoom combo is better. I can see I would have been better off buying the A2's since there won't be much use for the USB connection: but it's still a very nice purchase. These speakers have great potential. Warmly recommended, but if you have your own DAC/preamp set-up, go for the A2's.
