Wanted an AC router, did lots of research including DLink, Netgear Nighthawk, and Asus high end routers. Liked the concept of this router's SmartLink interface. There were lots of bad reviews but also some good ones too and figured I'd try it out, worst case I could return it. Bought in June 2014. Day 1, setup was easy, range was great. 3 hours later while streaming the signal was gone. For 2 days this occurred anywhere from 3 -7 times per day. Pulling the power seemed to fix it but a $180 router shouldn't need to be rebooted (ever in my opinion) much less 3x-7x per day.
Call 1:
So I call Linksys/Belkin (well armed with how the experience might go after reading the reviews) to resolve the issue. I go through the motions of getting my contact info, explaining the problem and responding to their question path they read directly off a procedure list in front of them. Fine, maybe it will help. Verified that all the latest settings were enabled and that my router was properly configured, but they wanted me to re-clone the MAC address from a hard wire connection. Reboot and im back on my way after an entire hour on the phone.
Call 2:
Day 2, called again b/c of same issue, go through all of the same BS before despite having a case ID. I get a Sr. Technician finally who wanted to reset the router to factory and then re-establish settings. So night 2 after 1.5 hours of the same playbook of questions, the router is rebooted and works, for an hour before dropping both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. Went to bed and decided to deal with the one last time the next evening.
Call 3:
Tried to reboot router first, that wouldn't work - no wireless internet could be achieved whatsoever despite it broadcasting the network name/signal.

Summary: The latest firmware from Linksys will cause the modem to lock up after several hours or days (duration varies). Do not purchase this router unless you are an IT hobbyist who enjoys troubleshooting.

I'm an IT professional who purchased this router for my own home. I've only used Linksys routers for myself and didn't need to replace the Linksys EA3500 I had in service, but I wanted to try out the new AC technology and had faith in Linksys so I got this EA6900 in January. I wanted to get it at launch but figured I'd allot time for any bugs to be worked out. My unit shipped with firmware Ver.1.1.42 (Build 156465) which I had no problems with. By default, Auto Update is set in the configuration and it updated itself to Ver.1.1.42 (Build 158863) after a few weeks. This is when problems began.

After 6/7 days, wifi devices will start losing connection. Soon thereafter, all wifi devices are disconnected and the router is inaccessble even via wired connections. Power cycle the router and this resolves the issues for another 6/7 days. The issue has been reported to Linksys support by myself and many others. There are posts on the Linksys customer forum regarding the exact same situation. Customer Support will instruct you to make arbitrary configuration changes on the router which I'm sure they are scripted to do. These changes won't fix anything.

Linksys/Belkin, if you're listening, you're doing a horrible job of customer service on this. You have many users who purchased a flagship AC router and it doesn't work. I was drooling waiting for the WRT1900 to come out, but I see it has just as many issues. And if you are actually monitoring customer reviews, please contact me. Replace my router.

I have used and installed home networks of various types and sizes, including those based on Linksys products. I was excited about the release of this EA 6900 router as it would combine several features I wanted... 2 bands, external antennas (which I planned to replace with more powerful ones), and off-site management. I ordered it pre-release directly from Linksys.

I could not be more disappointed. While the features all sound great on paper, they DO NOT work well in reality. I didn't experience trouble during start-up like many of the other reviewers. My troubles came shortly thereafter, and the unit eventually overheated.

The minor issues: the range is shorter than comparable routers. There was considerable speed loss (75% or so) even when in good range. There was about a 50% speed loss with items that were directly plugged in. For those of us who pay a lot extra to get higher speeds (100gig), this was a problem. Perhaps this won't effect those with slower connection speeds as much.

WORST issue: after a couple of weeks, speed was reduced dramatically. I investigated, and discovered a terrible burning smell. Like others, I experienced an over-heated unit. This should not have been caused either by our usage or item placement, and is due to a product not ready for prime-time.

APPLE AirPort: I returned this product and purchased an AirPort Extreme. I could not be happier. It has less features and customability, but simply works easily and well. The range is better, and speed much better (very little loss when connected via ethernet or wireless). I kicked myself for not having tried Apple networking products prior to now, and have already seamlessly added a couple of AirPort Expresses as Access Points to expand the network.
