Is the Paleo Diet Right for You? Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

Are you interested in the Paleo Diet but haven’t decided if it’s right for you? Do you want to know what science has to say before throwing out all of the food in your pantry? Then this book is for you!

This book outlines a gentle, stepwise plan to gently guide you toward making some wise lifestyle changes without going straight into stress and overwhelm—which leads many to failure.

This is not just a how-to-go-paleo guide or a recipe book—it’s much more. It delves into why the modern Western diet is leading us down the road to pain and misery and chronic illness, points out misinformation you hear almost daily from so-called nutritional experts, and offers strategies to help you put out the biological flames before they burn a hole in your health and longevity.

The Paleo Diet points us toward living more like our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Returning to this way of eating—and living—can have enormous benefits for your health, including restoring your energy, firing up your metabolism, and reversing the inflammation that leads many to developing heart disease, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. This book looks at Paleolithic nutritional principles based on what the latest science telling us—as opposed to making lofty, unsubstantiated claims.

Topics covered include surprising facts about how differently sugar and fat act in your body, the saturated fat myth, and antinutrients in common foods that silently wreak havoc on your immune system. A chapter is also included that may forever change how you approach exercise! The book also covers the latest research about the massive microbial population living inside you and the critical role it plays in every aspect of your health.

This is an EXCELLENT, 5-star book, which explains more about the Paleo Diet than any other book I have seen. It begins with, "A recent health survey revealed that 52 percent of Americans believe it is easier to do their taxes than figure out how to eat healthfully." This book certainly remedies that problem! Quoting scientific findings to back up the claims of the Paleo view and where big business has changed and warped our views from the natural course given to man, this ebook takes aim at the unscientific fallacies which confuse so many of us and get us chasing our tails trying to find out what we are doing wrong, and why we don't feel optimal. When the ebook gets to, "If you can reprogram your brain into accepting (the truths discussed in the book), you'll have a spectacular advantage over 99 percent of the population," a lightbulb went off in my mind and I realized how to finally, EASILY, eat better and more in tune with my body's systems. This book has been a revolutionary paradigm shift in mindset and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who is interested in better health, longevity and EASY weight loss/maintenance. Anecdotally, I ate (without calorie counting) this way for one day and the next day I stepped on the scale it said I lost 2.5 pounds and I never felt any hunger during that time. I ate a LOT more than any weight watcher or calorie counting diet I have tried, and I truly expected to have gained weight with all the "extra" calories I ate until I felt (finally!) full, but no, I lost over two pounds! Effortless weight loss now appears possible for the stubborn plateau I found myself on, and it can be a lifestyle change without constantly worrying over every morsel and its calorie content - literally starving to fit into my "skinny" jeans and eating like a rabbit. FINALLY, someone who found the answer.. and shared it. Kudos to the author Valerie Burke, I greatly appreciate this title and recommend it to you!

There are so many theories about why diabetes is on the rise and why, in spite of all these different diets which purport to end all your fleshy woes forever still leave 35% of us obese (body mass index over 30%, even as we eat 'low fat' and 'no fat' and 'no sugar' foods). The rest of us (myself included, and yes, over 30 years ago, I was obese) are most likely heavier than is strictly healthy. This book explains its own theories of why we are fat. One theory is we don't eat the right fats. The prime theme of the work is we need to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Those foods include sugar, flour, and grains such as rice you have to cook in order to eat. It does posit that meat (which you really should cook) is good, and most vegetables, particularly leafy greens and non-starchy veggies, are good. It also suggests that sweet foods, including fruits and honey should be eaten in moderation. Paleolithic man hunted and gathered food, spending a lot of energy in the process. The agricultural revolution--when humans settled down and domesticated animals to provide milk, eggs and meat--reshaped our diets rather too suddenly for us to evolutionarily adapt.

The writer of the book apparently has lived much of her life with dietary hassles. She has by trial and error found the paleo diet to be least problematic for her. Maybe if we followed our ancestors lifestyle a little more closely and didn't consider a drive to the local fast food place a 'hunting and gathering expedition' we wouldn't be having so many strange illnesses to contend with these days.

What a refreshing approach to the possibilities of Paleo!
As a person simply exploring to learn more about Paleo, I found this book was a perfect place to begin.
Valerie, provides a wealth of information in a very easy to follow, interesting and enjoyable writing style. She has cut through the hype that has made the idea of this method of eating so confusing and ridged.
The chapter "Death By Sugar", is a quite an eye opener for those of us that know we need to consume less sugar, but are still finding it difficult. The information Valerie provides here should not just be handed out by health care providers, but should be thoroughly reviewed with each and every patient. This chapter alone is easily worth the small price of this book.
Excellent first book! I'm looking forward to more by this author.

This book is great for two reasons. It packs a huge amount of information into a small space, spanning everything from an overview of the agricultural revolution's effect on human development to modern studies into nutrition. It challenges a lot of the mainstream nutritional 'wisdom,' but does so by clearly examining the history of the science and pointing out clearly where the rationales are faulty.

In addition to being useful, it's written with a conversational, casual style that reads very easily.

Along with Mark Sisson's "The Primal Blueprint" and Angelo Acquista's "The Mediterranean Prescription," this is one of the most useful and pleasurable reads on nutrition that I've found so far.

A good basic review of the current "Paleo" diet craze, which I am lukewarm about but practice in a small way since discovering I am intolerant to wheat (NOT gluten). I will never be full-time Paleo because I simply don't buy the reasoning and I like my rice and beans. After reading the book I am no more convinced of any "scientific" basis for the diet than I was before. In fact, had I known about the author's connection with Dr. Mercola, I would have skipped the book entirely, becauuse I consider him a total crank.

I am on the paleo diet already so a lot of this info I already knew but it had a lot of info that was new to me too. I really liked how she broke down the diet and challenged it to become fitting for our current era using science. I really liked her thoughts on the modified paleo diet and I am going to incorporate some of her ideas into my lifestyle.

This book was an easy read and never complicated. I read the entire book in one sitting in just a couple of hours.
