Customers are mixed about the heat resistance of the knife. Some mention that it needs better blades, it doesn't get hot, and the motor is powerful. However, others say that it gets just a tiny bit hot while cleaning their catch, the body of the knives was quite warm, and that the too small motor would get hot. Some customers also report scorching on the blades and burns inside the packaging.

I like this 110v knife but the blades are impossible to remove without using a tool to get enough pressure on the two buttons. Even then it was difficult to pull the blades. I had to use a V-clamp by using barbecue tongs to get the leverage and the right angle on the angle-faced buttons. See pic. Pulling these blades is a cut finger or hand hazard.Rapala, listen to your customers! Fix this defect! Also, I chose this 110v plug-in knife because it has more power then cordless and because I had bad luck with batteries on 2 of the RAPALA ION cordless ones. If you go a long time without using the ION, the battery won’t take a charge. They were the old version batteries, not the current one with the white tags on them. But, once burned ……. !
This is my husband’s favorite fish filleting knife. He uses it each time we catch walleye. The bigger the fish, the heavier the bones. This knife holds up to job of both large and small fish fillet cleaning needs. The blades flex just the perfect amount needed so little loss of meat happens when he cuts each side of the fish off of the bones and then passes between the skin and meat. The blade sharpness holds up for cleaning many fish, too! Great product!
Over the past too many years, I have burned up my share of regular electric knives while filleting a bucket of pan fish. A few weeks ago, it happened again on the third fish of a bucket full of bass and bluegills. After an hour of re-adjusting and re-learning how to fillet the "Old" way, I decided to look at an electric knife designed specifically for this task. One that might be able to stand up to the endurance demands of long run times and heat dissipation created from running the knife no-stop for extended periods of time. Rapala has a long standing track record of quality fillet knives, so why not stay with a solid proven company? I have used this knife several times now and it handles Great. The bigger cooling fan is designed to keep the motor cool during long run times. The blades are more aggressive and the motor speed is much faster than the "Thanksgiving" turkey carvers. Great value and Quality. Thanks RAPALA!
I've been using this knife for a couple of months now and it does help in the filleting process. I use it along with a typical hand filleting knife. The blades do not seem as sharp as I expected, but works well removing the fillet from the outer skin. I do the work after I return home using a table I have setup in my garage so I have electrical power readily available - no need for a battery powered knife. I am using the knife for filleting Walleye I've taken from the Great Lakes.
I do a lot of fish cleaning. These knives are some of the best out there. I have tried several other brands and these hold up the best and fast cutting. What I have found when electric knives seem to not cut very well any more is there is a little plastic part that the motor moves that causes the reciprocating motion of the blades. When the knives is new the pin that attaches it to the motor is a tight fit, but after a time this pin wears the hole in the plastic to more of an oblong shape. When this happens the reciprocating action of the blades gets shorter. The shorter strokes causes a much slower cutting rate. That's why electric knives get to a point were they do not cut very well any more. I think the manufacturer knows this. This knives has held up best to this sort of break down. Yes I have tore down many to just find out what has failed. Follow up: 2020 : Myself and my friends use this knife almost on a daily bases. It still does an excellent job. Yes I have replaced it , but only after thousands of fish. I see others have had some problems, but for me it has held up and performed excellent.
I first had two of Rapala smaller units, and they worked ok, but the too small motor would get hot and the I had to wear a glove on my knife hand to keep from burning it. This unit has so much more power and the handle does not get hot in my hand. It powers through the ribs of the largest walleyes! I just ordered and received another one the other day ... repeat customer! Throwing out the smaller one used for skinning. I tried another brand a friend brought over last weekend to clean our fish, did not have the power this unit has. Excellent value for the price! Maybe you don't mind spending $200 to clean fish, but I do ... this does the job at a fair price.
IMO...the current product being sold has a design flaw that is making it impossible for you to remove the right blade. I just purchased one and had to return it because I could not remove the right blade.
And it wasn't just that unit...
I just got the replacement unit...and it has the same exact issue
The issue is that no amount of pushing the right button would allow it to come out. This is a potentially very very dangerous situation.
Trying to grab the EXTREMELY sharp blade while trying to force it out is very likely to severely cut you if your hand slips
Do not try to force it out...just return it and contact Rapala customer service and let them know.
I own an electric knife and a meat cleaver. Neither of them did much to prevent the task of chopping a whole ribeye or a whole strip into steaks any less laborious. I searched for something that could do this work. When I came across this electric filet knife, decided to give it a try. I haven't had it that long, but it made quick work of of a whole stripe that I cut into 1.5 inch thick steaks. I trimmed a whole brisket like I was slicing butter. It costs about 3 times that of an electric knife, but I believe it is still a good value. I have no idea about its durability. If it goes out on me too soon, I will update this post.
Looks good. nice to have two blade sizes. l have used one before and they make filleting a fish easy. you can also use it to cut meat. very happy with my purchase.
